Chapter 121: Seven Dimensional Layers

  • Next Chapter

The healing array had a problem.

At least, that was what Serah Garrick thought when she first noticed the strange readings.

It was 2:17 AM, and she was alone in the Academy’s medical wing, surrounded by three holographic screens and enough empty coffee cups to embarrass a professional researcher.

The central focus hovered above the treatment platform, glowing with its usual pale blue light.

Everything appeared normal.

Essence circulation was stable. The biological-crystalline components were functioning perfectly. The six circuitry healers trained by the Healer’s Assembly had completed their maintenance shifts without reporting any problems.

Two hundred and thirty-one patients had been successfully treated since the array’s activation.

And yet, something was wrong.

Serah enlarged the central focus’s energy readings.

A thin silver line appeared between two ordinary Essence waveforms.

She frowned.

"What the hell is that?"

The line shouldn’t have existed.

The central focus was supposed to receive dimensional Essence, process it through Clearwater’s dissolution-and-reformation structure, and distribute it across the healing pylons.

Every energy signature should correspond to one of those operations.

This one didn’t.

It appeared at irregular intervals, carried almost no measurable Essence, and disappeared whenever she tried to isolate it.

Serah adjusted the scanner.

The line vanished.

"Of course."

She restored the previous settings.

The line returned.

Serah leaned forward.

’That’s not interference. Something is responding to the scanner.’

She opened the array’s complete treatment records.

More than six million individual measurements filled her screen, collected from the patients treated by the array.

Most researchers would have needed an entire department to process that much information.

Serah had already written a filtering program.

It took forty seconds to identify the first abnormal reading.

Then another.

Then another.

Seventeen identical signals appeared across the treatment records.

All seventeen originated from the central focus.

None came from the patients.

And all seventeen had the same strange property.

Their energy signatures appeared older than the array itself.

Serah stopped moving.

"That’s impossible."

She checked the equipment’s clock.

Then the calibration records.

Then the original construction data.

No errors.

The signals were real.

She pulled up the manufacturing records for the dimensional crystal used to create the central focus.

Three hundred years.

The original slab had spent approximately three centuries absorbing ambient dimensional Essence before Alvian acquired it.

Serah stared at the number.

Then she looked at the central focus.

"You’ve been keeping secrets."

She reached for her communication crystal.

"Pell, get to the medical wing."

A tired voice answered.

"It’s two in the morning."

"I know."

"Is somebody dying?"

"No."

"Then can they start dying at eight?"

Serah ignored that.

"Bring the resonance probes. All four."

A pause.

"All four? Did somebody break the central focus?"

"I don’t know yet."

"That’s a terrible answer."

The crystal disconnected.

Twenty minutes later, Pell Ossuary entered the laboratory carrying a metal case.

The former Bloodhound mercenary had changed considerably since joining the Healer’s Assembly training program.

Her right arm was still missing, but her remaining hand had become surprisingly skilled at working with circuitry equipment.

She placed the case on the table.

"What happened?"

Serah pointed toward the screen.

Pell examined the waveform.

"Looks like corrupted Essence."

"That’s what I thought. Watch."

Serah increased the scanner’s sensitivity.

The silver line separated into three smaller patterns.

Then seven.

Pell’s expression changed.

"Seven energy channels?"

"Seven signatures occupying the same space."

"That shouldn’t be possible."

"People keep telling me that."

Serah connected the first resonance probe to the central focus.

The crystal flickered.

A sharp ringing filled the medical wing.

WEEEE!

One of the monitoring screens turned red.

[WARNING!]

[Unidentified dimensional resonance detected]

[Central focus output fluctuating]

Pell immediately grabbed the emergency isolation switch.

"Serah!"

"Don’t shut it down!"

"The pressure’s climbing!"

"I can see that!"

"Then do something!"

Serah pushed her pad against the control panel and redirected the scanning current away from the treatment channels.

The warning disappeared.

The central focus returned to its normal glow.

Pell slowly released the emergency switch.

"Next time you want to blow up a hospital, tell me before I carry the equipment inside."

Serah barely heard her.

The seven signatures were still on the screen.

And now they were moving.

Not randomly.

They were forming symbols.

By 4 AM, Serah had recovered the first complete fragment.

She didn’t recognize the language.

Fortunately, the crystal contained more than writing.

There were diagrams.

Human bodies.

Essence pathways.

Dimensional layers arranged around a human figure.

Serah enlarged the first diagram.

The human body was surrounded by seven overlapping structures, each connected to a different point along its Essence channels.

Underneath the image was a damaged sequence of symbols.

She ran the symbols through an old Academy translation database.

The first attempt failed.

The second produced nonsense.

The third returned a partial translation.

DIMENSIONAL INTERFACE RESEARCH

Serah’s fingers stopped.

She opened the next fragment.

TALENT PATHWAY MODIFICATION

Another.

INTERFACE EVOLUTION AND RESONANCE STABILITY

Then a fourth.

Most of the text was missing, but one sentence survived.

Talent manifestation is determined by dimensional connectivity, not biological output alone.

Serah read it twice.

Then a third time.

"No fucking way."

She immediately opened the Academy’s standard Talent classification manual.

Its first page contained the familiar ranking scale.

E-Rank.

D-Rank.

C-Rank.

B-Rank.

A-Rank.

S-Rank.

Every classification depended primarily on measurable Essence output, Talent efficiency, and destructive or supportive capacity.

There was no mention of dimensional connectivity.

Not one word.

Serah returned to the recovered diagram.

’What if we’ve been measuring the wrong thing?’

She opened her own SunFire Talent records.

Then Alvian’s original Clearwater assessment.

Two diagrams appeared beside the ancient research.

She overlaid the old dimensional interface model onto her SunFire readings.

Two connections flashed.

She repeated the process with Alvian’s original Clearwater signature.

Seven connections flashed.

Serah sat completely still.

Then she laughed.

It was a short, disbelieving laugh.

"Three hundred years."

Pell looked over.

"What?"

"Three hundred years of Talent classification, and nobody checked the connections."

"Serah, you’re starting to sound insane."

"Get my coat."

"Why?"

"We’re going to Tobias’s hut."

Tobias Finch had a map spread across his kitchen table when Serah arrived.

Alvian sat opposite him, examining a route leading beneath the thirteenth level.

Several entrances had been crossed out.

One remained circled in red.

The old scavenger tapped it with his mechanical finger.

"Fourteenth-level access. The passage collapsed after my last expedition, but the door behind it should still be intact."

Alvian studied the marking.

"The pre-Cataclysm door?"

"Unless somebody stole a twenty-ton dimensional gate while I wasn’t looking."

Serah pushed through the doorway.

"I found something."

Tobias looked at the clock.

"Good morning to you too."

She placed her pad directly over the map.

Alvian leaned back.

"That’s our route."

"Your route can wait five minutes."

"Must be important."

Serah activated the display.

Seven silver rings appeared around a human figure.

Tobias frowned.

"What’s that?"

"Something the Academy should have discovered three centuries ago."

She brought up the original Clearwater assessment.

The familiar E-Rank classification appeared.

Then she placed the ancient interface model over it.

Seven connections illuminated.

Alvian narrowed his eyes.

"Seven?"

"Seven dimensional layers connected to your Talent."

Tobias glanced between them.

"Explain that in normal language."

Serah picked up a broken piece of circuitry wire.

"Think of this as a Talent."

She connected one end to a small Essence battery.

The wire glowed faintly.

"This is what the Academy measures. How much power comes out."

She connected a second wire.

The glow grew brighter.

"But according to the research I recovered, the important part isn’t just the power coming out."

She placed seven wires against seven separate contacts.

"It’s how many dimensional layers the Talent can reach."

Alvian watched the screen.

"And Clearwater reaches seven?"

"Exactly."

"What about your SunFire?"

"Two, according to the model."

Tobias scratched his beard.

"You’re telling me an E-Rank Talent has more connections than a B-Rank Talent?"

"Yes."

"That sounds like somebody made a very expensive mistake."

Serah gave him a flat look.

"Three centuries of expensive mistakes."

She opened the recovered research.

The first diagram displayed a Talent pathway connected to a dimensional layer.

The second showed circuitry strengthening that connection.

The third showed the pathway expanding until an entirely new Talent manifestation became possible.

Alvian recognized the structure.

’That looks familiar.’

He remembered Serah’s first circuitry session.

The burning sensation in his forearm.

The moment Clearwater Palm became stronger.

The later restructuring sessions that allowed him to use Abyssal Dissolution Domain without emptying his Essence reserves immediately.

Serah pointed toward the third diagram.

"This is what we’ve been doing."

"Channel widening?"

"No. That’s what we thought we were doing."

She placed their previous circuitry records beside the ancient diagrams.

The patterns matched.

"We weren’t just widening the pathways inside your body. We were strengthening the connections between your Talent and the dimensional structure."

Tobias leaned forward.

"And that caused his Talent to change?"

"It helped make those changes possible."

Serah displayed another damaged section of the research.

A single dimensional layer was highlighted.

Its translated label read:

DISSOLUTION BOUNDARY
