Chapter 117: The Tribunal
But the crystals hummed in their pockets. The network pulsed with information. And by the end of the day, every crystal-carrier on the continent would know what had happened.
The Crown had tried to silence a healer. The healer had built a network. The network had caught a Chief Magistrate. And the Chief Magistrate was now on his way back to the capital to testify against the system that had employed him.
’The wound beneath Vaeloria is still stirring. The pre-Cataclysm archive still waits. The World Will is still Reassessing. But today, the political arc completes its first phase. The Crown’s corruption is exposed. The scapegoat is captured. The witness is in custody.’
’Tomorrow, the tribunal.’

The Guildhall chamber had been rearranged.
Not the public session arrangement of seven platforms around a speaking floor. The platforms had been moved into a curved bench, five Guildmasters seated where seven had been. Two seats empty. Two Guilds had declined to participate. Their absence was louder than their presence would have been.
The Delver’s Consortium. The Artificer’s Circle. The Healer’s Assembly. Three fracturing Guilds. Two Crown-loyal Guilds that had broken ranks: the Merchant’s Compact, with Holt’s deputy seated where Holt himself should have been, and the Crafter’s Bond. Five Guildmasters sitting in judgment of Crown officials.
The Crown’s Judicial Office had been excluded from the proceedings. First time in a century that Guilds had tried Crown officials without Crown authorization.
Alvian watched through the crystal feed from Tobias’s hut. Hendricks tracked the reception metrics. Serah had her pad open, recording everything.

[Political event detected]
[Type: Joint Guild Tribunal]
[Participants: 5 Guildmasters, public gallery, extranet broadcast]
[Audience estimate: 17 million viewers continent-wide]
[Assessment: Historical precedent being established]
Wren sat in the defendant’s box. Three days of Consortium custody had hollowed him out further. His formal robes hung loose on his frame. His eyes tracked the gallery like a hunted animal scanning for exits that weren’t there.
Thorne sat in a separate box, three meters to Wren’s left. His posture was different. Composed. Controlled. He had made his deal. He knew what was coming.
The lead prosecutor was a Consortium advocate named Mira Voss, recruited by Elara Thorn specifically for this proceeding. Level 42, B-Rank Verdict Talent that enhanced her ability to detect deception in testimony. Not combat-oriented. Built for courtrooms.
She began at 9:15 AM.
"Chief Magistrate Aldric Wren. You are charged with thirty-seven counts of authorizing illegal contracts through the Crown Judicial Office. Each contract constitutes a separate offense under Guild Regulation 14, Section 3, Paragraph 7: abuse of magisterial authority for material gain. Combined penalty range: permanent Essence suppression to life imprisonment."
Wren’s attorney, a Crown-appointed advocate named Garrick Pell, rose. "The defense contests the tribunal’s jurisdiction. The defendant is a Crown official. Crown officials are subject to Crown judicial proceedings, not Guild proceedings."
Mira Voss didn’t blink. "The Crown’s Judicial Office has been recused from these proceedings due to direct implication in the corruption being prosecuted. The defendant cannot be tried by the institution he is accused of corrupting. Guild Regulation 9, Section 12 establishes alternate jurisdiction in cases of institutional conflict."
’Clean argument. The Guilds thought this through. They have the regulations. They have the precedent. They have the public broadcast making any procedural trick look like obstruction. Pell has nothing.’
Pell tried another angle. "The contracts presented as evidence were obtained through unlawful means. The Magnus Estate was raided by an individual under Crown bounty at the time. The Bloodhound spatial rings were recovered from a battlefield engagement of questionable legality. The evidence chain is contaminated."
Voss’s response was prepared. "The doctrine of necessity. When the system itself is corrupt, the system’s rules about evidence collection do not apply. The Magnus Estate belonged to a man who had just signed an assassination contract against the individual who raided it. The Bloodhound spatial rings were recovered in self-defense during an engagement initiated by the mercenaries themselves. Standard Guild doctrine. Established precedent from the Voran Tribunal of 2187."
Pell had no response. The Voran precedent was airtight.
The evidence presentation took two hours. Each contract projected on the holographic display. Each notary seal authenticated. Each authorization stamp traced to Wren’s hand.
Wren testified briefly. His attorney had advised him to claim Crown security protocols authorized the contracts. The protocols didn’t exist in any documented legal framework. The tribunal rejected the argument within minutes.
’They invented protocols. They actually tried to argue that secret Crown authority justified thirty-seven assassination orders. The fabrication is so transparent it’s almost insulting. Pell knew it wouldn’t work. He made the argument anyway because it was the only argument he had.’
Thorne’s testimony was the turning point. He spoke for forty minutes. Named names. Dated meetings. Specified amounts. Identified which Crown officials had attended which planning sessions. He had documentation. Authorization forms. Internal correspondence. He had been preparing this testimony for weeks, building his cooperation case before the tribunal had even been scheduled.
’You can see why they coordinated. Thorne stays and burns Wren. Wren runs and disappears. If Wren had reached the ship, Thorne’s testimony would have been the only record. With Wren captured, both testimonies align. The case becomes airtight.’
The deliberation took ninety minutes.
The five Guildmasters returned at 4:47 PM. The chamber went silent.
Guildmaster Elara Thorn read the verdicts.
"Chief Magistrate Aldric Wren. Guilty on all thirty-seven counts. Sentenced to permanent Essence suppression and life imprisonment. The suppression to be administered within forty-eight hours. Imprisonment to be served at the Guild Detention Facility at Thornwall."
Wren didn’t react. He had known. The flight had been his confession. The capture had been his sentencing. The tribunal was just the formality.
"Guild Magistrate Hollis Thorne. Guilty on all thirty-seven counts. Sentenced to twenty years of Guild-supervised service, with continuous Essence monitoring. Service to be performed within the Guild judicial system, under supervision of the Delver’s Consortium’s oversight office. Cooperation considered in sentencing. Testimony deemed valuable. Sentence reflects contribution to broader investigation."
Thorne nodded once. He had gotten his deal.
"The noble families implicated through documented contracts: Magnus, Varen, Holt, Castellan. Formal censure. Financial penalties proportionate to documented contract values. Magnus family: seizure of remaining assets, the family having been leaderless since the death of Duke Gaius Magnus. Varen family: fine of sixty thousand credits. Holt family: fine of forty-two thousand credits. Castellan family: fine of eighty thousand credits, plus seizure of Castellan Logistics operations due to direct involvement in facilitating payment laundering."
’Severe. The fines are heavy but survivable. The asset seizures are devastating. The Magnus family is gone. The Castellan shipping operation is gutted. The Varens and Holts are wounded but intact.’
’But the next ruling is the one that matters.’
Thorn paused. Looked directly at the broadcast crystal. Looked, it seemed, at Alvian through the feed.
"Final ruling. Regarding the assassination contract issued by Duke Gaius Magnus against Alvian Vance. The contract is found to be illegal under Guild Regulation 14 and Crown Judicial Code Section 9. The Duke’s death at the hands of the target, during an engagement initiated by mercenaries hired through the illegal contract, is ruled justifiable self-defense under Guild Regulation 7, Section 4: Doctrine of Defensive Action Against Unlawful Aggression."
"The Crown bounty issued against Alvian Vance, E-Rank Clearwater, student of Ironclad Academy, is hereby formally voided. All charges stemming from the engagement are dismissed. All property seized under authority of the bounty is to be returned. All arrest warrants are cancelled."
The chamber erupted.

Alvian sat in the hut. The crystal feed showed the chamber in chaos. Journalists shouting questions. The public gallery on their feet. The five Guildmasters rising to leave.
Hendricks closed his eye. "It’s done."
"It’s done," Serah repeated. Her voice was quiet.
Tobias, watching from the Guildhall gallery, transmitted through his own crystal. "The Crown’s people in the gallery look like someone died. The Crown-loyal Guildmasters who didn’t participate are clustering in the corner, trying to figure out how to spin this. The fracturing Guilds are walking out like they own the place. Which, legally speaking, they now do."
Alvian didn’t feel triumphant.
’Two months. Two months since the Awakening Ceremony mocked me as E-Rank trash....
