Chapter 112: Five Hundred Crystals

  • Next Chapter

"I’m learning that the same action described different ways produces different responses. INT 215 helps."

He finished the seventy-fourth crystal. Set it in the tray. Picked up the next shard.

---

Three days.

Alvian worked in shifts. Four hours of forging, one hour of rest, repeat. His Essence regeneration at 2.5 per minute with VIT 855 kept pace with the Forge’s demands, but the mental fatigue was cumulative. Each crystal required his full attention. Identical lattice. Identical frequency. No variation permitted. A single misaligned molecular channel would create a dead spot in the mesh network.

By the end of day one, 167 crystals. By the end of day two, 342. By noon on day three, 501. One extra, because the Forge had produced two at once on the final batch, a quirk of the Creation Wheel landing on a Silver tier multiplier that briefly amplified his output.

[DING!]

[Production milestone reached]

[Communication Crystals (Mark II): 501/500]

[Creation EXP accumulated (3-day session): ~45,200]

[Total Creation EXP: ~849,100]

[Genesis Forge proficiency: Novice+ → Apprentice (threshold breached)]

[Note: Mass production accelerates proficiency gains through repetition]

[The System notes that the Host has finally learned the value of practice]

Alvian sat back. His hands ached in a way that had nothing to do with his physical stats and everything to do with sustained focus.

Tobias arrived with Hendricks Cole and three Consortium delvers carrying crates. The crystals were packed in padded compartments Serah had designed, each one separated from its neighbors to prevent resonance interference during transport.

"Five hundred and one," Tobias said, counting the inventory. "Where does the extra one go?"

"Leo." Alvian stood. Stretched. His spine cracked in three places. "He’s been drawing pictures of warriors with glowing swords for weeks. He deserves a crystal of his own."

Hendricks gave him a look that was half confusion and half something softer. "You’re giving a six-year-old a continental communication device."

"I’m giving my brother a way to reach me if something happens. The network routes through every crystal in range. If he activates his, I’ll know within seconds no matter where I am."

Hendricks nodded. The cybernetic eye dimmed slightly, the way it did when he was processing emotion he didn’t want to show. "Right. Undercity batch is ready to distribute. I’ve got twenty carriers waiting at the market. Each one takes five crystals to different districts. The thirteenth level coordinates. The fourteenth handles Warrens access. The fifteenth through twentieth extend outward from there."

"The Guild batches?"

Tobias took over. "Thorn’s people collect theirs at noon. Vex sends three technicians to inspect the calibration before distribution. Ashby’s medical staff collect theirs at the Academy medical wing. Each Guild gets exactly one hundred crystals, no more, no less. Keeps the dependency equal."

"Surface resistance?"

"Helen Croft has it handled. She’s got contacts in the merchant district, the taverns, the Academy staff. The distribution happens tonight, after dark. The Crown’s observation drones cycle past the thirteenth level every forty minutes. There’s a twelve-minute window where the drone coverage gaps."

’Twelve minutes. Enough time to move fifty crystals through the upper maintenance tunnels without being tracked. Helen has done this before. She ran covert operations for the Guild Elites before she became an instructor. The skills haven’t faded.’

"What about the two Level 60 Royal Knights watching the thirteenth level entrances?"

Hendricks grinned. The grin was not pleasant. "They’re watching the main entrances. The thirteenth level has eleven exits, not three. The eight they don’t know about are the ones we’re using. Let them watch the front door. We’ll use the windows."

The crates went out. The carriers dispersed. Alvian stood in the empty cache room and watched the last delver disappear into the tunnel. The dimensional crystal stockpile had shrunk to a quarter of its original size. The copper wire was nearly gone. The iron brackets sat untouched. He had used what he needed and no more.

[DING!]

[Distribution initiated]

[Tier 1 (Undercity Network): 100 crystals dispatched]

[Tier 2 (Fracturing Guilds): 300 crystals dispatched]

[Tier 3 (Surface Resistance): 100 crystals dispatching tonight]

[Network coverage projected: Continental within 72 hours]

[Assessment: Shadow infrastructure operational]

’The Crown has its relay towers. Its surveillance drones. Its magitech enforcement grid. All of it visible. All of it attackable. All of it dependent on infrastructure they control and we can see.’

’Now we have our own. Invisible. Distributed. Self-sustaining. They can’t shut it down because there’s no central node to shut down. They can’t track it because the signals route through mesh relays that move as the carriers move. They can’t even detect it because the crystals use dimensional resonance, not standard Essence, and their sensors are calibrated for the wrong frequency.’

’We just built a kingdom inside the kingdom. And the Crown doesn’t even know it exists.’

He walked out of the cache. The fourteenth level’s perpetual twilight wrapped around him as he climbed toward the thirteenth. Tobias fell into step beside him, the new arm’s crawler-crystal joints humming softly.

"The evidence," Tobias said. "The Bloodhound contract. The Magnus correspondence. Everything we’ve been sitting on for weeks."

’Weeks. The evidence has been sitting in my spatial ring since the Estate raid. Waiting. The political moment wasn’t right. The Guilds hadn’t aligned. The bounty was still active. If I’d released the evidence too early, the Crown would have buried it. Now the three Guilds are aligned. The Crown’s enforcement is gutted. The tribunal the Delver’s Consortium wants has a real chance of actually happening.’

’Now the evidence has teeth.’

"Tomorrow," Alvian said. "Serah and I start organizing the evidence tomorrow. Every contract. Every notary seal. Every financial trace. We package it for the Guild Council and let the political machine do what political machines do."

"You trust the Guild Council to actually act?"

’I trust that the three Guilds aligned with us will use the evidence as a weapon against the Crown’s legitimacy. Whether the Council as a whole acts doesn’t matter. What matters is that the evidence exists, is public, and cannot be ignored. Once it’s in the open, the Crown has to respond. Every response they make weakens them further.’

’I don’t need the Council to act. I need the Crown to react.’

"I trust the evidence to do what evidence does," Alvian said. "Get people angry enough to demand answers."

Tobias’s mechanical arm sparked once. The old scavenger’s version of a nod. "Right. Tomorrow then. I’ll have Serah pull the financial records from the Magnus correspondence. I’ll handle the Guild legal analysis. We split the work, we finish in two days, we deliver to Thorn on the third."

’Three days. Three days until the corruption evidence goes public. Three days until the Crown has to answer for the Bloodhound contract, the Magistrate’s notary seal, the four noble families who paid for assassination orders. Three days until the kingdom’s political landscape shifts again.’

’I built a network today. Tomorrow I build a case.’

He reached the thirteenth level. The maintenance tunnel opened onto the street where Tobias’s hut sat, the door ajar, candlelight flickering inside. Martha was awake, sitting at the table, Leo on her lap showing her a drawing. She looked up when Alvian entered. Smiled.

Her lungs were clear. Her fingers were pink. The crystallization was gone, replaced by healthy tissue that the Tears of the Phoenix had rebuilt. She was alive because of the System, because of the God Roll, because of a sixteen-year-old boy who refused to let his mother die.

’Everything else, the Guilds, the network, the evidence, the Crown, the World Will, the thing waking up in the Warrens. None of it matters as much as this. Her breathing. Her smile. Leo’s drawing.’

’But the rest of it exists. And I have to deal with it.’

The kitchen table in Tobias’s hut was covered in paper.

Not the clean, organized paper of a research workspace. The scattered, layered, cross-referenced mess of a forensic accounting operation being conducted by three people with different skill sets and a shared determination to make something stick.

Serah had the financial records spread across the left side. Her circuitry pad displayed a spreadsheet she had built overnight, tracing credit flows through intermediary accounts. Each transaction was color-coded. Red for assassination contracts. Blue for intimidation. Green for evidence suppression. The patterns that emerged were damning.
