Chapter 331: The Alchemist’s Gauntlet
Chapter 331: Chapter 331: The Alchemist’s Gauntlet
The heaven-cleaving bronze gong erupted across the Great Solaris Arena.
Its sound rolled through the morning mist like thunder, shaking the stone columns and rattling the weapons of every cultivator present.
The one million spectators fell silent in an instant, their collective breath held captive by the deep, resonant boom.
Grand Marshal Vane stood at the center of the arena, his blood-platinum armor gleaming under the rising sun. His hand still hovered over the gong’s surface, the vibrations fading into stillness.
He raised his head, his cold eyes sweeping across the packed stands.
"The Round of 16 begins," he announced, his voice amplified by spiritual energy. "Match 1: Azure Dragon Sect versus Thousand Poison Pavilion."
The crowd erupted.
Cheers, jeers, and chants mixed into a wall of noise that crashed against the arena walls.
Damon Arcknight sat in the Azure Dragon dugout, his golden eyes fixed on the projection array hovering above the arena floor.
The array flickered.
Runes of light swirled and coalesced into the roster display.
Azure Dragon Sect - Lineup Order:
Alena Terra
Mio Nightrider
Seraphina
Flare
Mia Nightrider
Lumina Solaris
Damon Arcknight
The crowd’s reaction was immediate.
Gasps rippled through the stands. Elders from other sects leaned forward, their eyes narrowing in disbelief. Whispers spread like wildfire through the VIP boxes.
"Alena Terra? an alchemist?"
"Are they throwing the match?"
"Sending a pill-maker first against Thousand Poison? That’s suicide."
In the Crimson Eclipse dugout, Kai Reventon laughed openly, his voice carrying across the arena floor.
"They’re sending a botanist to fight poison masters?" he called out, his voice dripping with mockery. "Did the Azure Dragon run out of real fighters?"
Alistair Reventon, seated in the VIP box, smiled thinly and shook his head.
In the Azure Dragon dugout, Ariel turned to Damon, her brow furrowed.
"Are you sure about this?" she asked quietly. "Thousand Poison’s first fighter is their venom master. His toxins can paralyze a Heavenly Spirit Realm cultivator in seconds."
Damon didn’t look at her.
His eyes were on Alena, who stood at the edge of the dugout, her back straight and her breathing steady.
"She’s ready," he said simply. "Trust her."
Ariel hesitated, then nodded.
Across the arena, the Thousand Poison Pavilion’s first fighter stepped onto the sand.
He was a hunchbacked man with sallow, pockmarked skin and long, greasy black hair that fell across his face. His robes were dark purple, stained with patches of dried residue that shimmered with faint, toxic colors.
His hands were the most disturbing part.
Long, yellowed nails extended from each finger, curving into points like claws. A viscous, emerald liquid dripped from the tips, sizzling where it hit the sand.
He smiled, revealing blackened teeth.
"So the Azure Dragon sends a herb-picker to face me," he rasped, his voice like grinding stones. "Did you run out of real cultivators? Or did you just want to feed me an easy kill?"
He laughed, a wet, rattling sound.
"I’ve dissolved alchemists like you before. Your bones will make excellent fertilizer."
Alena Terra stepped onto the arena floor.
The crowd’s noise dimmed as she walked forward, her forest-green robes flowing behind her. Her rich brown hair cascaded past her shoulders, catching the morning light.
Her face was calm.
Her forest-green eyes were clinical, analytical, devoid of fear.
She reached up and unclasped the staff from her back.
The Verdant Genesis Staff hummed as she pulled it free, its wood grain glowing with a soft, emerald light. Leaves and vines spiraled up its length, pulsing with life energy.
She planted the butt of the staff against the sand and met the venom master’s gaze.
"I am Alena Terra," she said, her voice clear and steady. "Direct disciple of the Alchemist Pavilion Elder. I have spent my life studying herbs, toxins, and the delicate balance between life and death."
She tilted her head, a faint smile touching her lips.
"You think poison scares me?"
The venom master’s grin faltered.
Alena’s smile widened.
"I’ve already prepared countermeasures for every toxin your sect has ever recorded. Your neurotoxins, your hemotoxins, your necrotic agents, your paralytic compounds."
She counted them off on her fingers.
"I’ve neutralized them all. In theory. Now I get to test it in practice."
The venom master’s eyes narrowed.
"You’re bluffing."
Alena shrugged.
"Find out."
Grand Marshal Vane raised his arm, his gaze sweeping across the two fighters.
The arena fell silent.
One million spectators held their breath.
Vane’s arm dropped.
"Round of 16, Match 1: Begin!"
The venom master lunged.
His claws extended, emerald liquid spraying from the tips as he crossed the distance in a blur of motion. The air around him shimmered with toxic vapor, a cloud of green mist spreading outward.
Alena didn’t flinch.
She raised the Verdant Genesis Staff and slammed it against the sand.
A wave of emerald light erupted from the impact, expanding in a perfect circle. The green mist hit the barrier and dissolved, neutralized by the life energy radiating from the staff.
The venom master’s eyes widened.
He was already mid-lunge, committed to the attack.
Alena pivoted, her movements fluid and precise. She swung the staff in a low arc, catching the venom master across the ribs. The impact sent him skidding across the sand, his claws digging furrows as he tried to stop.
He righted himself, his face twisted with rage.
"You got lucky," he snarled.
Alena adjusted her grip on the staff.
"I don’t need luck."
She advanced, her steps measured and deliberate.
The venom master’s hands began to glow, the emerald liquid on his claws intensifying. He slammed his palms together, and a wave of purple mist erupted from his body, rolling across the arena floor like a tide.
"Try neutralizing this," he spat. "This is my signature poison. A blend of thirty-seven different toxins, each one designed to amplify the others. One breath and your organs start shutting down."
Alena stopped walking.
She reached into her robe and pulled out a small, crystal vial filled with golden liquid.
She uncorked it and drank it in one gulp.
The venom master stared.
"What... what did you just do?"
Alena wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
"Antidote," she said simply. "I synthesized it this morning. Based on the poison samples you left on your last victims."
She smiled.
"Your signature poison is no longer a secret."
The venom master’s face went pale.
"No. That’s impossible. I’ve never let anyone survive long enough to—"
"You left traces," Alena interrupted. "On the weapons of the cultivators you killed. I analyzed them. Catalogued them. Found the counter."
She raised the Verdant Genesis Staff.
"Now. Shall we continue?"
The venom master’s hands trembled.
For the first time in his career, he looked afraid.
Alena’s smile sharpened.
"Good."
