Silently nodding, we followed Spider-Man's aunt and soon walked out into the backyard, where an old, shabby shed with a padlock stood in a corner by the fence.
She led us straight to it, and then May inserted a key into the lock, and... the crooked wooden structure for gardening tools suddenly turned out to be a high-tech device, clearly far from banal mechanics.
But while I fully appreciated the optical illusion based on a technological principle, why it was necessary to run futuristic neon lighting with a spider logo across a real metal door instead of wood completely eluded me.
The flashing lines of light looked pretty and even, probably, pretentious, but they clearly carried no functional meaning.
The real door of the structure simply opened, revealing a view of an elevator cabin, or rather, a platform without walls, and no futuristic technology was required for this.
Nevertheless, I considered it superfluous to comment on this and disciplinedly stepped inside after the ladies.
The platform began to descend, and various motorcycles-cars-planes located along the walls of the man-made underground cavity became illuminated to us.
"Mmm, gorgeous cosplay of the Batcave," I was forced to admit. This Spider-Man definitely had good taste. And a couple of extra million bucks.
And I wasn't joking about the cosplay; there was even a wall with suits under glass, like in the "original."
Except the suits were Spider-Man's, not Batman's.
"Oh, you're the first one to guess!" the feisty pensioner looked at me with respect as the platform went down.
"Why is that?"
"The last Batman comic came out somewhere in '78, and after that, the whole superhero theme was basically shut down until 2011, leaving only the illustrated adventures of Captain America," the old lady shrugged.
"We have a small collection of my husband's comics preserved in the attic, so Peter read them as a kid, but his peers didn't even remember heroes like Batman, not to mention today's youth, they only have modern heroes in their heads, like Pete and Iron Man."
"I see..." by the way, I also don't recall a large number of comics at our school, and yet kids are supposed to love such things, especially kids with superpowers...
"Welcome!" Aunt May nodded to us meanwhile, as the platform reached the floor.
"Make yourselves at home, and I'll go check how my meat pie is doing," and the old lady, waiting until we stepped off the platform, briskly dashed upstairs.
No sooner had the feisty pensioner left the room than a young, but "full of mystery" voice called down to us from above.
"Greetings!" A guy in a spider suit, clad in a heavy leather trench coat... um, a black-and-white guy in a spider suit, tipped his fedora. His trench coat was billowing in the wind. In a basement. Without drafts.
"Noir-esque," I noted with respect. This guy clearly knew what Style and the Old School were.
"Konnichiwa!" called out right after the "noir" Spider... ahem... a cute girl with a huge spider-robot.
A cute girl whose "animation style" was like in 90s anime, give or take.
As was the "heroic entrance," no, seriously. There was a strobe light, light effects, pink hearts in the air accompanying a "victory" sign by the eye, and "cool moves" performed by the girl and the robot. Grendizer approves! (1)
"Amazing," I lean closer to the girl, studying this miracle with wide eyes.
Her body was authentically material, not particularly differing from the surrounding drawn reality, but the proportions of the head, facial features, hair, and clothes, all this was executed in the canons of anime.
Starting from huge brown eyes covering half her face and "indistinguishable" to the eye individual hairs in her short-cropped black hair, ending with the "schematic" depiction of the nose, lips, and any folds on the skin at all, although all this took place, just without shadows, namely the "contours" of the object.
Before me was a hundred percent anime girl, but not a flat 2D picture, but fully three-dimensional and absolutely certainly alive and real.
"What's with you?" the girl frowned in response to my intense gaze.
She, by the way, was also dressed in something very strongly resembling a school uniform with a tie under a shiny jumper and a plaid skirt above the knees.
And a green school backpack on her shoulders was also present.
"A real anime girl..." I shook my head, seeing no reason to hide my feelings. "Excuse me, my request may seem not entirely adequate, and most likely it is, but can I pat your head? I've dreamed of it all my life!"
"Are you a pervert or something?" the schoolgirl backed away, with obvious suspicion, but without special hysterics or any fright.
"No, I am exclusively into adult ladies, but you simply have no idea how much tenderness you evoke in my heart with your appearance. So, can I?" my intonation itself became almost pleading, and with my eyes, I tried to produce thirteen "Puss in Boots from Shrek" out of ten possible.
"Well, alright," measuring me suspiciously with a glance and calculating something in her mind, the girl allowed. "Only briefly," and proudly folded her arms over her chest.
"Kawa-a-ai," carefully and with all reverence for the solemnity of the moment, I put my hand on her head.
And to the touch, individual hairs are felt... And also... The feeling... Strange. As if I am touching another dimension, but not its energy, like with Stark's reactor, but its space... the laws of existence and even a drop of essence.
The surrounding world was already unusual to my senses. While in Asgard and on Earth I generally paid no real attention to my feelings of the world and space, because they were something habitual and didn't impinge on consciousness, in this world I constantly experienced a certain... not discomfort exactly, but, let's say, something like the feeling of completely new shoes.
But the feeling of unfamiliarity from this universe did not compare in any way with the feelings that washed over me upon contact with this girl.
I stood in an unfamiliar universe and literally touched with my hand a shard of an even more unfamiliar universe to my entire nature, and it was... a ve-e-ery strange feeling.
"Howdy!" distracted me from the process of cognition the one who descended last... uhhh... a pig in a Spider-Man suit.
Correction, a sort of caricatured-cartoonish pig in the style of early Disney, where the head is two torsos, the snout is half the head, and the rest of the body is an "oval little man" with "hook-arms, squiggle-legs." And yes, it was bipedal. And it just saluted us.
"Oho," I remove my hand from the girl's head, who during the petting had desperately pinkened cheeks but stubbornly kept an expression of stern pride on her face.
"I think I won't be mistaken if I say that the most dangerous one here is you. Judging by your appearance, you should have an ultimate in the form of dropping an anvil weighing ten tons on an enemy's head out of nowhere, and also a wooden mallet three times your height that fits in a pocket."
"Loki..." MJ closed her eyes, having also been impressed by the sight of the new acquaintances before, "these aren't cartoons after all!"
"Uhh, nah, man, you flatter me!.." the hog objected in the voice of a sort of smoke-cured plumbing service veteran.
"See!" the girl felt solid ground under her feet, turning to me.
"I can only do one ton so far, but I'm working on it," the creepy shorty finished his thought. He was about up to my knee and up to the waist of the anime girl. Yes, she is also small, a centimeter or two shorter than Laura.
"Spider-Ham! Nice to meetcha! I was bitten by a radioactive pig, and I became a superhero," and he extended a hand to me, which I shook without delay.
