Chapter 92: The Elite Observers

  • Next Chapter

The colossal, circular arena was paved with massive blocks of dark green-stone. These ancient tiles had witnessed thousands of years of brutal combat, their surfaces stained with the faint, rusted hue of dried blood.

A heavy weight of martial intent pressed down on anyone who stepped within its boundaries, thick enough that even the wind seemed to move carefully here.

Lin Tian stood at the center of this ancient battlefield.

The cloth-wrapped profound-iron broadsword rested across his back. His obsidian robes fluttered in the mountain breeze. Beneath the concealment of the Abyssal Shadow Veil, his Foundation Establishment Qi lay dormant, coiled deep in his Dantian like a sleeping dragon — to any outside eye, his spiritual signature read as nothing more than a youth at the peak of Qi Gathering.

Creak... Rumble...

Minutes after his arrival, the bronze doors of the Array Labyrinth began to groan open, one after another.

The so-called geniuses of the Outer Sect stumbled through them in wretched condition. Their heaven-silk uniforms hung in scorched, wind-slashed ribbons. Many bled freely, leaning on their weapons just to stay upright, some dragging companions who could no longer walk on their own.

Out of ten thousand disciples who had entered the Illusory Forest, only four hundred had survived both its illusions and its traps to reach this arena.

The contrast was stark. While the survivors gasped for breath, swallowing low-grade recovery pills to mend fractured meridians, Lin Tian stood untouched — not a speck of dust on his shoulders. A few of the nearby disciples noticed, and the sight alone seemed to unsettle them more than any wound could.

High above, floating in a sea of clouds, sat the white jade VIP platform, untouched by the blood and dust that coated the arena below.

Instructor Qing stood at its edge, her crimson martial uniform stretched over a tall, athletic frame. Her gaze swept the exhausted survivors below, then brushed past the youth in obsidian robes — and for the briefest instant, a tremor ran through her thighs that she alone noticed.

She forced her eyes elsewhere, her voice rolling out over the arena like thunder.

"The second stage has concluded! Four hundred and twelve disciples remain!" Instructor Qing’s tone left no room for argument. "You have one hour to meditate and consolidate your spiritual energy. Then the final stage begins — the Arena Duels. Only the last fifty standing earn entry into the Inner Sect."

The exhausted disciples dropped where they stood, crossing their legs and drawing in ambient spiritual energy the moment the hour was granted. A few collapsed entirely before they could even finish sitting upright.

Lin Tian sat as well, closing his eyes. He had spent no energy in the labyrinth, so there was nothing in him left to recover.

Instead, he sent his divine sense upward, through the mist, toward the floating platform.

The Inner Sect isn’t simply a higher realm, he thought. It’s an empire split among factions, and the ones sitting on that platform are its true rulers. Conquering this sect means conquering them.

"System," he said silently. "Insight Eye. Sweep the platform."

Crimson runes flared behind his closed eyelids. His perception, sharpened by the system, slipped past the platform’s defensive arrays and settled on the powerful women seated in the grand chairs.

Instructor Qing’s profile had already been laid bare to him days ago — the Fire-Poison eating at her meridians, the 15% obsession already blooming from nothing more than a passing brush of auras. He didn’t need to scan her again. A warrior who lived by her body, yet her own blood burned her from within with every fight. Ripe, and closer to falling than she knew — she simply hadn’t realized yet what was already taking root in her.

His attention shifted instead to the woman in scholarly violet robes already watching him with open interest.

[Name: Elder Bai]

[Age: 120]

[Identity: Master of the Inner Sect Array Peak]

[Cultivation Level: Core Formation (Middle Stage)]

[Profession & Talent: 5-Star Array Mistress / 5-Star Talent]

[Physique: Heavenly Calculation Physique]

[Hidden Weakness: Severe Soul Fragility — years spent maintaining the sect’s grand defensive arrays have worn her soul thin, her mind never free of the noise of a million restless runes.]

[Obsession Level: 12% (Passive Intrigue) — witnessed the Host’s flawless node-severing technique; its quiet precision briefly calmed her fraying mind.]

Core Formation, he can feel the weight of her pressure even from a distance. A realm above his own — a direct move here would be reckless. But an Array Mistress worshipped the Heavenly Dao above all else, and his knowledge of primordial array logic was exactly the medicine her tired mind was starving for. Patience, here, would matter more than strength, and patience was something his Earth-taught mind had never lacked.

Finally, his divine sense drifted to the right, settling on a woman he hadn’t studied yet.

She sat rigid and upright, dressed in verdant robes stitched with golden patterns of herbs and pill furnaces. Her figure was generous, her expression carved from strictness alone. Her eyes moved across the disciples below the way a craftsman studies raw material, weighing and discarding without a flicker of sentiment.

A faint, bitter trace of medicinal herbs drifted from her direction, mixing oddly with the scent of blood still hanging over the arena floor.

[Name: Elder Liu]

[Age: 98]

[Identity: Master of the Inner Sect Alchemy Peak]

[Cultivation Level: Core Formation (Early Stage)]

[Profession & Talent: 4-Star Alchemist / 5-Star Talent]

[Physique: Verdant Flame Physique]

[Hidden Weakness: Pill Toxicity / Phantom Burns — decades near alchemical fire and imperfect pills have left toxic residue in her spiritual veins, surfacing as agonizing chest burns every midnight.]

[Obsession Level: 0% (Stranger)]

His eyes opened, a predatory light flickering behind them.

Elder Liu, of the Alchemy Peak. His foundation was a lake of liquid Qi that needed to keep expanding toward Core Formation, and that meant a steady, uninterrupted flow of high-grade pills — more than Madam Shen’s Resource Hall alone could ever supply.

A woman who spent her life curing others while unable to cure herself. When the time came, his Yang essence would be the only remedy for those Phantom Burns — and with her, the sect’s entire pill supply would follow. It was almost poetic, he thought, that the sect’s greatest healer carried the one wound she could never treat.

The board was set. Three names, three weaknesses, three doors into the Inner Sect’s true power. Each of them thought themselves untouchable, and each of them had no idea their names had already been written into his ledger.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, the system logged the three profiles neatly, waiting for the moment he would act on them.

To the rest of this world, these women were untouchable — commanding peaks, thousands of disciples, entire branches of the sect’s strength. To Lin Tian, they were simply Yin waiting to be harmonized into his growing empire.

BWOOOOM!

A deep horn rolled across the peaks, breaking the arena’s silence.

The hour of rest had ended.

Four hundred and twelve disciples opened their eyes together. Martial intent thickened the air instantly — weapons drawn, Qi flaring, the low hum of techniques waking across the stone floor.

"Rest is over!" Instructor Qing’s voice cracked through the sky, her crimson whip snapping against empty air. "The Arena Duels begin now. The arrays will divide you into pairs at random. A match ends when one side is thrown from the ring, knocked unconscious, or yields."

Rumble!

The floor shifted beneath their feet. Golden array runes lit the stone, splitting the battlefield into dozens of smaller rings, each sealed behind a shimmering barrier.

"Do not hold back," Instructor Qing commanded, eyes blazing. "Show this sect the weight of your Dao Heart."

Lin Tian rose slowly and reached back for the hilt of his broadsword.

He didn’t bother channeling Qi into the blade. Against disciples running on empty reserves and flashy, half-formed spells, raw physical strength — shaped by memories from the Hundred Smelting Guild — was more than enough.

He stepped into his ring. The crowd around the barrier had already thinned to those too injured to care what happened next, most simply grateful the hour was over.

Across from him stood a young man in tattered white robes, gripping a trembling longsword. Exhausted, running on fumes after the labyrinth, but his eyes still carried the desperate aggression of a cornered animal.

Lin Tian regarded him without a flicker of concern.

"Draw your sword if you must, junior," he said, his voice low and even, cutting cleanly through the noise of the ring. "But I’d yield now. My blade doesn’t know restraint."

The youth’s jaw tightened, Qi flaring weak but defiant. "We’re both outer disciples. I won’t hand you my future without a fight."

Somewhere behind the barrier, a handful of exhausted onlookers turned to watch, more out of habit than real interest.

He lunged, his longsword blurring into a streak of silver aimed straight at Lin Tian’s throat.

The final stage of the Promotion Tournament had begun.
