Chapter 124: 124 | Small Waves

As the lunar cycle waned and the twenty-seventh day since the great foundational breakthroughs dawned, a heavy spiritual mist drifted through the outer courtyards of the Cloud-Sea Pavilion.

Lin Tian stood near the edge of his spiritual herb garden, dressed in simple gray robes. His powerful [Primordial Yang-Tyrant Body] remained hidden beneath them, while the [Abyssal Shadow Veil] concealed the true density of his Foundation Establishment Liquid Qi.

To the rest of the Crimson Nimbus Sect, he appeared to be nothing more than a young disciple at the Peak of the Qi Gathering Realm.

The peaceful atmosphere was soon disrupted by the arrival of an Inner Sect Elder.

Elder Zhao, a man in his late fifties with a cultivation base at the Peak Stage of the Foundation Establishment Realm, descended from a flying spiritual sword. He wore the standard robes of an Inner Sect Elder, and his eyes swept over Lin Tian with a calculating look.

"Disciple Lin Tian," Elder Zhao greeted, his tone carrying the weight of a senior. "Your recent rise has not gone unnoticed. It is well known that you have the favor of the Outer Sect Artifact Pavilion."

He paused before continuing.

"A young sapling with such backing should not stand alone in the harsh winds of the Inner Sect."

Lin Tian clasped his hands respectfully, his golden eyes calm and unreadable.

"Elder Zhao praises me too highly. I merely focus on my cultivation and the Dao of refinement."

"Solitary cultivation is a slow and difficult path," Elder Zhao countered. "Join my faction and pledge your loyalty to my pavilion."

"I can provide you with high-grade Spirit Gathering Pills and access to superior elemental cultivation manuals. In return, you will help maintain a connection between my faction and the Artifact Pavilion."

It was a clear attempt to use Lin Tian to gain access to Aunt Lin’s resources.

"I am deeply humbled by the Elder’s generous offer," Lin Tian replied smoothly. "However, I prefer to cultivate independently. I must respectfully decline your invitation."

Elder Zhao’s expression darkened.

For him, being politely refused by a Qi Gathering disciple was still a serious loss of face.

"A solitary tree is the first to snap when the heavenly storm arrives, Disciple Lin," Elder Zhao sneered.

His spiritual pressure flared for a brief moment, carrying an unmistakable warning.

"I hope your Dao heart can withstand the tribulations of the Inner Sect."

With a flick of his sleeve, Elder Zhao mounted his spiritual sword and flew away.

Lin Tian watched him disappear, a faint smile touching his lips. He did not need to react yet—the Shadow Web would reveal what Elder Zhao did next.

By the twenty-eighth day, word of Elder Zhao’s warning reached Madam Shen through the Shadow Web’s intelligence network.

Inside the Inner Sect Resource Hall, Madam Shen sat behind her spiritual-jade desk in dark-crimson robes. Her expression remained calm as she reviewed the latest allocation records.

A brief report lay beside the ledger.

Elder Zhao had approached Lin Tian personally, attempted to recruit him, and left after issuing a veiled warning when Lin Tian refused.

Madam Shen’s eyes narrowed slightly.

She could not openly punish Elder Zhao or interfere with his resources without drawing attention. Her position allowed her to apply pressure, but only through legitimate procedures.

She opened his faction’s upcoming allocation records.

"Deacon Han."

"Yes, Vice-Manager Shen?" the deacon replied.

"Review Elder Zhao’s current requisitions," Madam Shen said. "Route the less urgent materials through the Eastern Valley channels."

Deacon Han hesitated. "Would that not delay their deliveries?"

"That is the purpose of the route," Madam Shen replied calmly. "Mark the spirit stone request for routine verification as well. Let everything follow the normal procedure."

The deacon nodded.

"Understood."

"Do not delay everything," Madam Shen added. "Only enough to slow the flow. Keep the records clean."

"Yes, Vice-Manager."

The deacon bowed and withdrew.

Madam Shen closed the ledger.

Elder Zhao would still receive his resources, but the flow would no longer be smooth. The delays would have ordinary explanations, leaving little reason for anyone to suspect deliberate interference.

Over time, even such small disruptions could place pressure on a faction accustomed to reliable access to resources. Madam Shen leaned back in her chair, a faint smile touching her lips.

"For now, that was enough."

The thirtieth day brought a moonless night to the Crimson Nimbus Sect.

Within a modest courtyard belonging to Elder Zhao’s faction, his personal disciple, a proud youth at the Peak Stage of Qi Gathering, sat in meditation on his bed. He was quietly circulating his spiritual energy when the atmosphere in the room suddenly changed.

A faint chill spread through the air, and frost began forming along the edge of his wooden desk. Before he could rise, a restrained but powerful spiritual pressure descended upon him, locking his body in place.

The shadows in the corner shifted.

Lady Yun stepped out in a dark outer robe, her aura carefully concealed. Her Foundation Establishment Middle Stage cultivation was restrained, but the pressure she released was still enough to leave the disciple unable to move.

She stopped several steps away.

She did not draw a weapon. Lin Tian had ordered her to keep the Shadow Web hidden and avoid confronting the enforcer and middleman while their investigation continued.

"The warning your master gave to the Cloud-Sea Pavilion has not gone unnoticed," Lady Yun said quietly, her voice entering his mind through Divine Sense.

The disciple’s eyes widened, but fear kept him from speaking.

"Give Elder Zhao a message," she continued. "He should not test the people around the Cloud-Sea Pavilion."

Her gaze remained cold.

"Tell him that the pavilion has already noticed his movements. If his faction continues to interfere, we will know."

The disciple swallowed with difficulty and gave a stiff nod.

Lady Yun released her pressure and stepped back.

A moment later, her figure faded into the darkness, leaving no obvious trace of her presence.

The disciple collapsed against the bed, gasping as his body finally relaxed. Cold sweat covered his back as he stared toward the corner where she had disappeared.

He had received the warning.

Now he had to decide how to deliver it to Elder Zhao.

While Madam Shen continued applying pressure to Elder Zhao’s faction, Lady Yun quietly followed the Shadow Web’s intelligence trail. On the thirty-first day, Aunt Lin made further progress deep within the subterranean forge of the Outer Sect.

Aunt Lin stood before her profound-steel anvil, carefully engraving twisting formation paths into three identical dark-jade tokens. Each token had to remain closely bound to its intended bearer while giving off as little spiritual fluctuation as possible.

Beside them rested a fourth token, slightly larger and darker than the others. This was the master token reserved for Lin Tian, allowing him to initiate brief transmissions through the concealed formation.

Lin Tian had asked for a communication method that was harder to detect than the sect’s standard talismans. Aunt Lin therefore refined a concealed formation path that could carry only brief transmissions without creating the usual spiritual disturbance.

She sealed a trace of Madam Shen’s Frost-Yin aura into the first token and a trace of Lady Yun’s Dark Yin energy into the second. The third was bound to her own purified Yin energy.

"The resonance is stable," Aunt Lin murmured as she examined the three bearer tokens.

She made a final adjustment to their formation paths.

"When the Sovereign sends a brief transmission through the master token, the linked bearer token will respond to the spiritual signature it was bound to. That will allow each of you to receive the message without relying on the sect’s ordinary transmission method."

The mechanism was simple, but that was exactly what Lin Tian had wanted.

Later that night, Madam Shen, Lady Yun, and Aunt Lin gathered in a secured storage room beneath the Resource Hall. Sound-dampening formations kept their conversation contained, leaving the room isolated from the surrounding halls.

Aunt Lin handed the dark-jade bearer tokens to Madam Shen and Lady Yun.

"These will not create the same spiritual fluctuations as ordinary communication talismans," she explained. "When the Sovereign sends a transmission, the intended token will respond through its bound spiritual signature."

Madam Shen examined the token carefully.

"Then others should have difficulty detecting the transmission."

"That is the purpose," Aunt Lin replied. "There is no need for a complicated formation. The shorter the transmission, the easier it will be to conceal."

Lady Yun slipped the token into the folds of her dark outer robe.

"Then we can exchange information without exposing the Shadow Web."

Madam Shen nodded. "It will make our communication safer."

Aunt Lin looked at the remaining master token in her hand.

"The formation is complete. Further refinement can wait until we know how it performs in actual use."

The three women quietly stored their tokens.

Another small piece of the Shadow Web had fallen into place, giving them a concealed way to stay connected without drawing unnecessary attention.

On the thirty-second day, the cycle of small waves reached its next stage within the inner chambers of the Cloud-Sea Pavilion.

Lin Tian sat upon his spirit-wood bed, holding the larger master token Aunt Lin had prepared. Dark-jade formation paths ran beneath its black surface, linking it to the spiritual signatures sealed into the three bearer tokens.

He guided a steady stream of golden Liquid Qi from his Dantian into the master token. The formation responded with a faint pulse, and a brief transmission traveled through the concealed link.

"Can you hear me?"

A few miles away, Madam Shen felt her token pulse within the folds of her robe. She touched it lightly and replied, "I hear you."

Deep within the Outer Sect forge, Aunt Lin received the transmission through her own token. "The connection is stable," she replied.

Near the edge of the sect, Lady Yun received it as well, her aura remaining concealed. "The message reached me without disturbance."

Lin Tian opened his eyes.

The transmission was brief, and its spiritual fluctuations were faint enough to escape ordinary detection. Each bearer token also responded only to its bound spiritual signature, keeping the connection concealed.

"The communication network is now fully connected," Lin Tian murmured.

Elder Zhao had attempted to test the waters around the Cloud-Sea Pavilion. In response, his faction was facing slower resource movement, while Lady Yun continued following the trail around him.

None of it was severe enough to provoke immediate suspicion, and every setback still had an ordinary explanation.

Lin Tian’s gaze shifted toward the distant, mist-shrouded peak of Alchemy Peak.

With the communication link in place, the Shadow Web could now operate more smoothly without exposing its source. The small waves around Elder Zhao had settled for now.

His attention returned to the larger game.

The Alchemist Matriarch remained the true target, and Lin Tian was ready to begin the next stage of his plan.
