Chapter 417 - 416: The Emperors’ Plight, The Nine Provinces on the Brink

There was a cold irony in the situation. The Barrier Token had once represented an obstacle that separated ordinary cultivators from a dangerous region of the world. Obtaining it had required effort, and using it had opened a path that would otherwise have remained inaccessible.

Now, the collapse of the dimensional structure had rendered it nearly meaningless, not because the artifact had lost its craftsmanship, but because the world it had been designed for no longer existed in its former state.

"The great hurdles of the past can become insignificant when the foundations of an era change," Lin Yuan continued. "The Great Dao does not preserve the value of an artifact merely because countless cultivators once fought over it. When the laws supporting its purpose are destroyed, even a treasured relic becomes nothing more than a reminder of what once existed."

He closed his fingers around the token and tossed it toward the ruined courtyard. The Barrier Token struck the shattered jade tiles with a metallic clatter before coming to rest beside a broken fragment of a decorative pillar. Its dark surface remained intact, but the significance it had once carried had been stripped away by the transformation of the world.

Bai Qingyue glanced at the fallen token before looking back toward the horizon. She understood Lin Yuan’s reasoning, yet the sight still left her with a complicated feeling. The artifact had represented a difficult but manageable obstacle, something that cultivators could prepare for and eventually overcome.

The collapse of the dimensional boundaries was different. It was not an obstacle that could be solved through sufficient cultivation or clever preparation. It was a fundamental change in the world itself, and its consequences were beyond the control of almost everyone living within the Nine Provinces.

"Emperors," Lin Yuan said, turning toward the three Emperors who stood a short distance away amid the wreckage. "You need to understand the full extent of what has happened. If the dimensional boundaries are disappearing, then the true invasion has not even begun. The demons we have encountered so far may only be the vanguard of a force that can now enter the Nine Provinces without facing the restrictions that once protected us."

Ku Ming nodded solemnly. "The Emperors will need to reorganize the surviving forces immediately. The old defensive arrangements will no longer be sufficient, and any strategy that depends on the demons being unable to cross the dimensional boundaries will fail. We must determine how much time remains before the spatial structure becomes completely unstable."

Bai Qingyue moved closer to Lin Yuan. Her black hair shifted gently in the wind, and her eyes remained fixed on the distant rift. Although the fortune associated with her Yunqi Realm had also been affected by the broken laws, the presence of that fortune still gave her an unusual sense of stability. She could feel the danger gathering across the battlefield, yet her heart did not descend into panic.

She reached out and intertwined her fingers with Lin Yuan’s. The gesture was simple, almost ordinary, but it carried a quiet certainty that neither of them needed to express aloud. They had faced countless dangers together, and the destruction surrounding them had not changed the most important part of their relationship. Whatever the world became, they would confront it side by side.

Lin Yuan glanced at her briefly, and a faint warmth passed through his otherwise composed expression. He did not offer a promise that everything would be fine, because neither of them could know what awaited them beyond the next moment. Instead, he tightened his hold on her hand before releasing it, allowing both of them to focus on the task ahead.

Around them, the Grand Court lay in ruins. It had once been the most imposing center of authority within the Central Continent, a place where powerful cultivators gathered to discuss the fate of entire regions and where ancient traditions had been preserved for generations. Its floating pagodas, defensive formations, and enormous ceremonial halls had symbolized the strength of the Central Continent, and the Nine Province at large.

Now, those symbols lay in ruins.

Several pagodas had crashed into the surrounding courtyards, their star-iron foundations twisted by the force of their impact. The remains of their decorative roofs were scattered across the shattered tiles, while broken formation pillars lay half buried beneath collapsed sections of the outer walls. Fires burned in the distance, and the smoke rising from them carried the stench of corrupted spiritual Qi and demonic blood.

The bodies of cultivators were scattered throughout the devastation. Some wore the robes of prominent sects, while others had fought in the armor of imperial guards or the uniforms of ancient cultivation clans.

Many had spent centuries refining their cultivation, believing that their strength would allow them to protect the Nine Provinces from whatever dangers emerged. Their lives had ended in a battle that had become far larger than any of them could have anticipated.

The demons had suffered equally heavy losses in certain sections of the battlefield, but their corpses presented a different sight. Many had begun to decay almost immediately, their flesh dissolving into blackened residue as the corrupted energy sustaining them dispersed. Others remained intact, their twisted bodies sprawled across the ruins with claws still extended toward enemies they had failed to reach.

Lin Yuan paid attention to the surrounding devastation without allowing it to distract him from his objective. His divine sense continued sweeping across the ruins, watching for any demons gathering to strike. He could detect several weakened presences among the rubble, but the overwhelming residue of demonic energy made it difficult to distinguish individual cultivators from the fading traces of those who had already perished.

Fortunately, the Emperors stood close by, sheltered within a damaged defensive formation near the central pavilion that still provided a small measure of protection. Their auras were far weaker than before, but Lin Yuan recognized them instantly.

The powerful fluctuations that had once surrounded these rulers had been suppressed so severely that their presence now resembled that of cultivators near the Peak of the Nascent Soul realm.

They were Emperor Tianxu, Emperor Nanheng, and Emperor Beiming. Their imperial armor was cracked, their robes were stained with blood, and the weapons they carried bore visible signs of the struggle that had nearly ended their lives.

Emperor Tianxu leaned heavily on his golden halberd. The weapon’s shaft was covered in fractures, and its once-brilliant blade had lost much of its radiance.

His golden eyes remained sharp despite the exhaustion visible in his face, but the commanding aura that had once surrounded him had been reduced to a faint remnant. He looked less like the sovereign who had presided over the Nine Provinces and more like a veteran who had survived a battle that should have killed him.

Emperor Nanheng stood nearby, her torn Vermilion Bird fan held tightly in one hand. Several of its divine feathers had been scorched or broken, and the flames that once flowed around its surface had dwindled to a weak flicker.

Her expression remained proud, but the blood staining the corner of her mouth and the tension in her shoulders revealed the extent of her injuries. Even her breathing carried a slight irregularity, suggesting that the suppression of the world’s laws had made it difficult for her to recover.

Emperor Beiming looked no better. His heavy Black Tortoise shield bore enormous claw marks, and one side of its surface had been almost cleaved apart. The defensive artifact had protected him from attacks that would have killed an ordinary cultivator, but the damage it had sustained showed how close he had come to being overwhelmed. His armor was dented across the chest, and every movement appeared to require more effort than he wished to reveal.

Their cultivation had been suppressed to the Peak of the Nascent Soul realm, leaving them with only a fraction of the power they had once possessed. The immense reserves of spiritual Qi that had supported their Void Refinement cultivation were inaccessible under the broken laws, and the restrictions showed no sign of weakening.

Even if they had possessed enough resources to heal their wounds, the surrounding environment would have prevented them from recovering their former strength quickly.

Emperor Tianxu slowly raised his head. His gaze passed over Lin Yuan, Bai Qingyue, and Ku Ming, briefly examining their injuries before settling on Lin Yuan. A heavy question seemed to sit behind his exhausted eyes.
