The transition from life to death within the Seek the Dao with the Illusion of the Heart domain was not a violent tearing of the soul, nor was it a plunge into terrifying darkness.

As Lin Yuan’s mortal body exhaled its final breath, the bitter winter cold, and the heartbreaking sound of his son’s weeping all gently dissolved, washing away like ink bleeding into a vast river.

Lin Yuan found his consciousness hovering in a profound, liminal space—the metaphysical threshold between the fabricated reality of the mortal world and the waking eternity of his true existence.

This space was a boundless void of soft, shimmering twilight. There was no gravity, and no physical form to anchor him. He existed purely as a point of absolute awareness.

In this suspended state, the passage of time ceased to exist. Here, Lin Yuan was granted the ultimate clarity required to review the monumental tapestry of the mortal lifetime he had just lived.

The memories did not merely play out before him like a distant theater performance, they manifested as echoes that he could feel with every fiber of his spiritual being. He hovered in the twilight, watching the echoes of that existence cascade past him like leaves carried by an autumn wind.

He saw a younger version of himself staring at a single copper coin in the palm of a bruised hand. He felt, once again, the crushing anxiety of that moment.

The echo shifted, and the biting, relentless sting of the winter cold washed over his soul. He watched himself sitting on the floorboards for three days and three nights, frantically pressing a wet rag to Lin Fan’s burning forehead. He relived the terror of a father pleading, terrified that the universe was coming to steal his son.

Then, the twilight warmed, shifting from the harsh gray of winter to the brilliant gold of a serene autumn. He watched his older, silver-haired self sitting on the wooden porch, reaching out to accept a bundle from Lin Fan.

As the weight of little Su’er settled into his arms, Lin Yuan’s soul swelled with a joy so pure and devastatingly bright that it rivaled the birth of a star. He saw the pride in his son’s eyes, the broken scholar who had found his true purpose, becoming the unbreakable pillar of their community.

As these echoes washed over him, completely saturating his consciousness, Lin Yuan achieved the ultimate realization of the Mortal Heart.

He finally understood the great paradox of cultivation.

In the real world, immortals hoarded time like misers hoarding cursed gold. A Nascent Soul Cultivator, or a Spirit Severing expert, would eagerly lock themselves away for five hundred years, completely divorced from the world, just to advance a single realm.

Because their lifespans stretched into the thousands of years, time became cheap. It became an abundant, and meaningless commodity. When you have an eternity to live, a single day holds absolutely no value. Their emotions dulled. Their attachments withered. They became statues of cold jade, infinitely powerful, but fundamentally empty.

But mortals... mortals were forced to spend their time.

A mortal possessed perhaps sixty, maybe seventy years if the heavens were merciful. Every single breath was a countdown. Every season that passed was a season they would never see again. Because their time was so terrifyingly scarce, it became invaluable. The finite nature of their days made every shared meal, every healed wound, every tear, and every laugh fiercely, and overwhelmingly precious.

Value does not come from eternity, Lin Yuan’s consciousness whispered into the twilight void. Value comes entirely from scarcity. It is the very fragility of the mortal vessel, the absolute certainty of an ending, that gives love its staggering weight.

This was the Epiphany of the Finite. The realization that to be truly alive was not to hoard centuries, but to spend a handful of decades with such fierce, blinding passion that it left you utterly consumed by the end.

As this profound mental breakthrough anchored itself deep within his spiritual sea, the twilight before him began to gently swirl and coalesce. The ambient mist of the dream domain gathered, shaping itself into a familiar silhouette.

Lin Yuan’s breath caught.

Standing before him in the endless void was Bai Qingyue.

She was no longer crippled. She stood perfectly straight on both legs, her beautiful figure radiating an overwhelming aura that caused even Lin Yuan, who stood at the peak of the Nascent Soul Realm, to tremble.

From the aura she released, Lin Yuan could tell that her cultivation had surpassed even the Soul Transformation Realm. She had most likely reached the legendary Void Refinement Realm.

Lin Yuan immediately understood what he was seeing.

This was a vision of what Bai Qingyue might have become if not for the Soul Transformation restriction that had crippled her cultivation.

Her talent had always been there.

She had never lacked the potential to walk a magnificent path of cultivation. She had simply been denied the chance to do so.

After experiencing the value of family, companionship, and walking through mortal life alongside those he loved, Lin Yuan’s determination became stronger than ever.

He would remove the restriction from Bai Qingyue no matter the cost, and he would restore her cultivation and allow her to once again pursue the Great Dao.

But this time, she would not walk that path alone.

He would walk beside her.

Bai Qingyue’s gaze locked onto his.

She slowly flew toward him before leaning forward and placing a lingering kiss upon his forehead.

"Thank you," she said softly. "Thank you for everything. Now, let us seek the Great Dao together, at each other’s side."

The moment those words fell, her figure began to dissolve.

Her body transformed into countless strands of grey mist, slowly dispersing into the endless void until not even a trace remained.

Lin Yuan stood silently, watching her departure.

His heart was unusually calm.

Yet deep within that calmness, a new determination had taken root.

And in the wake of her departure, the final, crucial process began within Lin Yuan’s spiritual sea.

He needed to reconcile his two identities. For more than sixty years, he had lived as a mortal. He had experienced poverty, sickness, aging, helplessness, love, family, and the countless struggles of an ordinary life.

But he was also Lin Yuan, the Late-Stage Nascent Soul cultivator who had comprehended the Thunder Rain Dao and subjugated the three great clans of Azure Cloud City.

These were not two different people.

They were both him.

The two identities stood face-to-face within his mind. The immortal cultivator, and the mortal father.

For a lesser cultivator, these two extremes would have violently rejected one another, resulting in catastrophic Qi Deviation. An immortal would view the mortal life as a humiliating stain, a moment of weakness to be purged.

But Lin Yuan fully, unconditionally accepted both as integral, indivisible parts of his true self. He embraced the mortal dust. He accepted that the vulnerability, the fear, and the love he had experienced were not weaknesses that tainted his Great Dao; they were the very bedrock upon which his true sovereignty would be built.

As the two identities seamlessly merged into one absolute consciousness, a terrifying, magnificent transformation occurred within his spiritual sea.

A new conceptual construct suddenly condensed in the center of his Sea of Consciousness. It was a heart, a beating, crimson, metaphysical Mortal Heart. It was incredibly heavy, carrying the accumulated joy, sorrow, grief, love, and countless emotions of an entire sixty-year lifetime.

Every experience he had lived through had been carved into its very essence. The Mortal Heart pulsed steadily within his Sea of Consciousness, perfectly formed and completely prepared for the ultimate trial.

The purpose of the dream domain was completely fulfilled.

Lin Yuan hovered in the twilight, his soul resonating with a power that transcended mere spiritual Qi. He was ready.

Back in the fabricated reality of the bedroom, the frail, elderly body of the Azure Swallow master released the final reserves of air from its lungs.

Lin Yuan exhaled his final mortal breath.

CRACK!

A deafening fracture echoed through the twilight space. The void shuddered violently, and then, the entire fabric of the Seek the Dao with the Illusion of the Heart domain shattered like a colossal mirror. Billions of shards of fabricated reality exploded outward, dissolving into nothingness, hurtling Lin Yuan’s fully awakened consciousness back toward the real world.
