Chapter 342: Chapter 339: Electric Current

"Current... what exactly does that mean? How can you know the future?"

Mo Ling voiced the question that had been nagging him.

This was something even Lin Nian, with all her intelligence, couldn’t comprehend.

"I’ll explain it using concepts you can understand. It might sound a bit hazy, but the basic principle is correct."

The robot turned its head, holding its hands out in front, side by side.

"An electrical current is generated by voltage."

It raised its left hand. "This is the positive terminal."

Then it raised its right hand. "This is the negative terminal."

"There’s a potential difference between them—one is high, the other is low. Electrons are like objects sliding down a hill, from here to here, and that’s what creates a current."

The robot lifted one hand higher.

"The act of me raising my hand creates this difference in height. This is the ’cause’."

It then looked at the unmoving hand.

"This one, which remains unchanged, is the ’effect’."

"The ’cause’ has already occurred. As long as you know the magnitude and direction of the current, you can deduce the location of the ’effect’."

"It’s like rolling an electron down a hill. If you know the shape of the hill, you can calculate exactly where the electron will end up."

"The future is a predetermined result. It cannot be changed. I simply use the ’current’ to know where the electron will roll—and thus, I know the position of the future."

"Do you understand?"

The robot held its hands in position, looking at Mo Ling intently.

"I think I get it... So, the future is just a result you’ve calculated?"

"Yes." The robot nodded, lowering its hands.

"If I were to go any deeper, I wouldn’t know how to explain it, because you wouldn’t understand the algorithm anyway."

Mo Ling sighed. He knew an ability like this was beyond his comprehension.

"Aren’t you worried? You and your comrades are all going to be destroyed."

The robot shook its head. "Worrying is pointless. We cannot resist humanity. Humans have the power to create us, and therefore, they also have the power to destroy us. Besides, this is already a predetermined outcome."

"However, we will appear again on Paradise Island, though we may not be quite as perfect by then."

Mo Ling was shocked to hear this. ’It even knows what happens on Paradise Island?’

"How do you reappear? Weren’t you completely destroyed?" Mo Ling pressed. He was desperate to know how these robots ended up on Paradise Island.

"No, you underestimate the authorities. Their method of destruction is no joke. All data and completed units will be utterly annihilated, without a single trace left behind. Our reappearance is... an accident."

"Lin Nian’s memory contains our manufacturing process. Her memory construct will create fictional sixth-generation intelligent machines inside the Hell Beast’s body. At that point, because we don’t belong to the Hell Beast, we will be expelled from it into the real world, becoming the robots on Paradise Island."

Listening to the robot’s story, Mo Ling grew even more astonished.

’Reborn from memory?’

He had never considered such a method.

He’d wondered if Researchers from Yuanxin Technology had gone to Paradise Island, but he’d never imagined this was how the robots on the island came to be.

’So when Jin Lou mentioned expulsion, he actually meant sending them into the real world, not killing them?’

Now, the origin of the robots on Paradise Island was clear.

But Mo Ling still had other questions.

"Lin Nian’s memory construct doesn’t have the ’patch,’ so how could it create sixth-generation intelligent machines?"

The robot’s answer to this question was the same as before: "Current."

It picked up two conductive wires from a nearby lab bench. It bent them, twisting them into spirals, and held them with both hands, pointing them in the same direction.

"The one on the left is me. The one on the right is Lin Nian."

"When the current in one coil changes, an adjacent coil, even one with no current, will spontaneously generate a current. This is the phenomenon of inductance."

"After I am destroyed, the current in my coil disappears. But the change from my disappearing current is recorded by the other coil."

"Even though I was destroyed, the impression of my disappearing current remained in Lin Nian’s memory. Her memory construct used that impression to alter the current in its own coil, which in turn caused a current to reappear in mine."

"And so, I was reborn, without the need for any relics."

Mo Ling was even more stunned after hearing this.

’It can work like that?’

’Why could Lin Nian’s memory construct change its own current?’

The moment that question surfaced, Mo Ling instantly thought of the Prophet’s true form—a black current.

’Isn’t she the current itself?’

Mo Ling was struck by a sudden, shocking realization.

"Can the current... really do anything?" Mo Ling asked, astonished.

Seeing that Mo Ling understood, the robot straightened the wires and placed them neatly back on the lab bench.

"Of course not. Lin Nian’s memory doesn’t have precise control over the current, so the copies of me aren’t perfect. Those robots all have various personality flaws."

"But that’s a good thing. Imperfect robots are what humanity needs..."

Hearing the robot’s words, Mo Ling recalled the strange robots on the island.

"Were those ’identities’ also a result of that imperfection?"

The robot shook its head. "No, the identities are some kind of mechanism on the island. We had no concept of ’identity classification’ at first. That only appeared after we arrived on Paradise Island."

"But you probably won’t find out the specific reason until later."

"Why?" Mo Ling pressed.

"Because in the future I’ve seen, there’s no scene of me explaining it to you." The robot shrugged. "In fifteen seconds, you will disappear and she will return. I don’t have time to explain it; it’s too complex."

"Fifteen... sixteen... fourteen..."

"Wait!" Mo Ling shouted upon hearing the robot’s reply, trying to ask another question, but the robot’s countdown didn’t stop.

"I forgot to tell you my name. I’m Jitai. It was a pleasure to meet you."

"And you, who appeared here for no reason at all, what’s your name?"

"Never mind. I won’t find out anyway. In the future I’ve seen, I don’t know your name..."

"Eight... seven... six..."

Jitai kept muttering to Mo Ling while continuing its countdown, and Mo Ling could sense a trace of despair over its fate in its tone.

Mo Ling had seen this kind of despair in one other person before: the Prophet.

When the Prophet was having a hysterical fit outside the safe house, her despair was just the same.

A thought suddenly arose in Mo Ling’s mind. ’That black current... maybe it isn’t just Lin Nian’s memory. The two coils, inducing each other, might have become intertwined long ago.’

But Mo Ling didn’t believe the future was truly as unchangeable as the Prophet and Jitai claimed.

And right now, he had the perfect opportunity to prove it.

"My name is Mo Ling! Remember it!"

Mo Ling used the last of his strength to shout the words.

Then, a tingling numbness once again spread through his entire body.

But before darkness descended, Mo Ling vaguely saw Jitai rush up to him, shaking him and shouting something.

But the countdown was over. Just as Jitai had said: fifteen seconds. Not one second more, not one second less.

Mo Ling could no longer hear what Jitai was asking. Everything before his eyes slowly faded to black.

But in his heart, Mo Ling was ecstatic.

’Now, it probably won’t be so certain it has seen the future, right?’
