Chapter 334: Chapter 331: The Real Safe House

"Good night."

Mo Ling woke to the sound of that soft, comforting voice.

He was holding the black stone, from which dark flakes continuously drifted off. Other than its similar shape, it bore no resemblance to the pure-white glowing stones.

This memory hadn’t lasted very long.

Because of the white light, the shift in perspective didn’t feel too abrupt to Mo Ling.

Still, a heavy feeling settled in his heart.

’Why are all these memories like this?’

Mo Ling didn’t understand. Of all the memories he had viewed on Hell Island, not a single one was happy. They were either about the passage of time or the sorrow of parting and death.

Every time he woke from a memory, it took him a long time to sort out his emotions.

However, after experiencing several memories, he had grown somewhat accustomed to it.

Besides, this non-human memory seemed to contain a wealth of clues.

’Were those slaves the workers who built Paradise Island?’

Someone had captured this race, which could create the glowing white stones, and brought them to the unfinished Paradise Island. They were then forced to cover the entire island with the stones, all to seal something away.

The foremen seemed to be the ones in charge.

Mo Ling carefully recalled the foremen’s appearances and realized something was off.

’It seems like the foremen were from many different races.’

There weren’t many images of the foremen in the memory, but Mo Ling clearly remembered that they were of various races. Their clothing and weapons were different, too, suggesting they came from different civilizations.

’Why would so many civilizations gather on Paradise Island?’

Mo Ling felt that the sealed entity was the key. If he could just figure out what it was, all the other mysteries would fall into place.

’It seems there’s more to this island than Jin Lou said. Something else must have happened here, long ago...’

As Mo Ling was lost in thought, outside the Block, Jin Lou had already led Li Luo to the front of the safe house.

"We’re almost there! It has to be right this time!"

Jin Lou rushed to the side of the Fire Thief Studio and smashed a hole with its mechanical arm. Inside the hole was the same pure-white stone material.

"Get inside, quick!" After confirming it was safe, Jin Lou charged in without a second glance.

The moment it was through the door, it collapsed to the ground, trembling so hard it couldn’t stand.

"We actually made it out... This is the first time I’ve stayed out so late. Thank goodness, thank goodness," it said, still shaken.

Li Luo followed close behind, entering the safe house.

The furnishings inside were unchanged. This was indeed the same room she had just left.

But she was also puzzled. Why had she woken up in this so-called "safe house"? ’Does the Fire Thief Studio have some other purpose?’ she wondered.

For now, she hadn’t figured out anything about Hell Island, yet after all that, she had come full circle back to where she started. She had no idea if this was a good thing or a bad thing.

She looked at Jin Lou, who was sprawled on the floor, and continued her questioning. "As long as we stay in the safe house, those crazed humans can’t get in?"

Jin Lou shook its head. "They’ll still get in. In fact, they’ll charge in even more frantically. The safe house is like a beacon not just for us, but for them, too."

"But they can’t stay inside the safe house for long. They’ll disappear soon enough. The white here protects us."

Hearing Jin Lou mention the color white, Li Luo was reminded of the pure-white buildings on Paradise Island.

"Why does white have that effect?" she asked curiously.

"I don’t know. But in the beginning, a mysterious person told us. He said that only the white places on this island are safe. He told us a lot of other strange things, too, but we didn’t dare believe him at the time because he was a human."

"What kind of strange things?" Li Luo pressed.

"I think it was about the humans on this island. He said the humans here aren’t real humans, but memory constructs. That included himself, but he was able to remain sane because of his own ability."

"But he didn’t say what that ability was. And since he never showed it, we could never figure out his identity. After he told us all that, he saw that we were still on guard, so he left and never appeared again."

At this, Jin Lou seemed to recall something else.

"No, wait, I think he did appear again. Sometimes, when we were hiding in the safe house, he would stand in the distance and watch us. He never did anything. Then, after twelve hours passed, he would just disappear. It was bizarre."

"But he was sane... Why didn’t you try to communicate? Maybe he could have protected you," Li Luo asked, confused.

Jin Lou shook its head, saying fearfully, "I didn’t dare. What if he was plotting something? Being sane just makes him even more terrifying. Besides, we can’t harm humans. If he had any bad intentions, none of us would be able to escape."

Seeing Jin Lou’s terrified expression, Li Luo finally realized just how horrifying humans were from a robot’s perspective.

For the robots, this Hell Island was truly "hell."

As the two of them were talking, a noise started up outside. The wailing sound of wind reached their ears.

Seeing this, Jin Lou immediately scrambled to its feet, locked the main door tight, and told Li Luo to move deeper into the room.

"It’s the Wind Rider. If we ran into him outside, we’d never escape. But in here, we don’t have to be afraid."

"What are his abilities?"

"He’s everywhere. He can turn into a gale, sweep you up into the sky, and then slam you back down. He’s also extremely aggressive. By the time you hear the wind, it’s already too late. But since we’re in the safe house, we don’t need to be scared."

Li Luo nodded in understanding.

The sound of the wind outside grew louder, beginning to howl.

Jin Lou began to bustle about the room, its spider-like mechanical legs scurrying around as it checked all the windows.

"Everything should be fine. The wind will stop soon."

The commotion outside grew more intense. Even the windows of the Fire Thief Studio were being rattled, making a loud banging sound.

"Are you sure it’s okay?" Li Luo asked worriedly.

"Of course. Just watch," Jin Lou said confidently.

The gale swirled, forcing its way through the cracks around the windows and the door. Carried within the wind were black shards, surging toward Li Luo and Jin Lou in the center of the studio.

But the gale had barely made it inside before it seemed to suddenly lose all its power. Its speed instantly dropped, and by the time it reached Li Luo’s face, it had become nothing more than a gentle breeze.

And the black shards, not long after entering the room, fell to the floor and vanished.

The howling grew more terrifying, and wind continued to pour into the safe house, but it would always weaken rapidly upon entry. This went on for quite some time.

Finally, silence fell once more. The doors and windows stopped rattling. That demonic wind had vanished without a trace, as if it had never been there at all.

Jin Lou cautiously walked to the window and looked outside.

"The wind has stopped."
