I'm The Devil

Chapter 390: Old Sins, New Orders

Lucifer stood near the foot of the enormous bed, hands in the pockets of his coat, watching his sister with quiet amusement. Coriel had not bothered to sit up. She remained stretched out, one arm flung across the covers, eyes half-lidded in the dim light of her chamber.

"You could have just asked me to handle the noise," Lucifer said. "Instead you scooped an entire army into a cloud and dropped them like naughty children."

Coriel’s mouth twitched. "Asking requires effort. This was faster. Besides, your little war was spilling into the wrong places. I was trying to sleep. Hell has been loud enough without winged zealots tearing holes in the sky."

"Hell is always loud."

"Not like this." She finally pushed herself up on one elbow, frowning at him. "Since you stopped running the day-to-day, the kids have been testing every boundary. Bariel keeps things efficient, but efficiency doesn’t stop tantrums. Demons argue over scraps. Lesser lords try to expand. Even my own subordinates have started acting like I won’t notice if they get loud enough. I notice. I just prefer not to move."

Lucifer’s smile softened. "I’ve been busy."

"Becoming God tends to do that." Coriel’s tone was dry. "Congratulations. Now go be God somewhere quieter. Preferably far from my bed."

He chuckled. "The nephilim are not going to stop because you relocated them. Seraphina has decided this is a holy war. She will keep pushing until someone stops her permanently."

Coriel studied him for a long moment. "And will that someone be you?"

Lucifer didn’t answer immediately. He glanced toward the far wall as if looking through it, through realms, toward a battlefield that had only just begun to burn.

"Not yet," he said at last. "Let the pieces move a little longer."

Coriel dropped back onto the pillows with a sigh. "Then at least keep the noise down. Some of us still value rest."

Lucifer’s expression turned almost fond. "I’ll try, sister."

He vanished between one blink and the next, leaving only the faint scent of other realms behind.

In the constructed realm Eamon had woven into existence, the first true clash erupted like a storm breaking over open ground.

Seraphina’s host hit the combined vampire and werewolf lines in a blaze of celestial light. Wings flared. Spears of pure radiance punched through the air. The nephilim fought with the desperate fury of an army that had already been humiliated once that day — yanked from the mortal sky by a tired princess of Hell and dropped into someone else’s trap. Their pride demanded blood.

Cain met the charge head-on. His claws tore through a nephilim’s armor, black blood spraying across the dirt. Beside him, Seth moved with the weary precision of a man who had survived every age of the world. A silver-edged blade flashed in his hand, cutting the wing from a warrior who had overcommitted. For the first time in centuries the brothers fought on the same side, and the effect was devastating.

"Left flank!" Cain roared. One of his vampire lords answered with a wave of thralls that crashed into the nephilim ranks like a living tide.

Seth’s voice cut across the chaos. "Don’t overextend. Their light burns deeper than fire."

A werewolf alpha barreled past them both, fur and fury, slamming into a knot of younger nephilim and scattering them. The ground shook under the impact. Celestial steel met fang and claw. The river that cut through Eamon’s plain ran red within minutes.

From a high ridge overlooking the battlefield, Azrael stood motionless. The Angel of Death’s black wings remained folded. His expression was unreadable. He had not drawn a weapon. He simply watched, waiting. Lucifer’s command had been clear enough: observe for now. Intervene only if the balance tipped too far or if Seraphina herself forced the issue. Azrael was patient. Death always was.

Seraphina carved a path through the center of the fighting, her sword leaving trails of cold light. Every nephilim who saw her straightened, their earlier panic burning away under her presence. She cut down a vampire elder with a single stroke and turned to face Cain across a stretch of bloodied ground.

"You hide behind a constructed cage and call it strategy," she called out, voice carrying over the roar of combat. "Come face the children of the Watchers properly, First Murderer."

Cain’s grin was all teeth. "Gladly."

They closed the distance in a blur. Cain’s claws met Seraphina’s blade in a shower of sparks and black ichor. The impact sent a shockwave outward, knocking lesser fighters off their feet. Seth moved to intercept a pair of nephilim champions trying to flank his brother, his expression grim but focused. For a moment the three of them — Cain, Seth, and Seraphina — formed the violent heart of the battle.

Eamon stood farther back, hands raised, reinforcing the boundaries of the realm as the fighting strained its edges. Sweat beaded on his brow. Creating a battlefield was one thing. Keeping it stable while gods and monsters tried to tear it apart was another.

Azrael’s gaze flicked once toward the distant figure of Lucifer, who had appeared on a high outcropping overlooking the plain. The new God’s red eyes glowed faintly as he watched the chaos unfold. He made no move to intervene. Not yet.

Seraphina drove Cain back three steps with a flurry of strikes, her face set in cold fury. "Your new God will not save you. Mercy is a luxury for those who have never lost everything."

Cain laughed through bloodied teeth. "Then stop talking and try harder."

The battle raged on. Light and shadow collided. Wings and claws tore at the air. And above it all, Azrael waited in silence for the single word that would let him move.

Lucifer’s soft voice drifted across the distance, heard only by the Angel of Death.

"Not yet."

Azrael inclined his head once and continued to watch.
