I'm The Devil

Chapter 380: The Bartender and the First Sons

Lucifer set the bottle back under the counter with a soft clink. The whiskey in Kaelen’s glass had gone untouched for a long time now. The werewolf’s yellow eyes kept flicking to the door, then to the clean spot on the floor where Silas had once stood, then back to Lucifer.

The bar felt smaller. Not because the walls had moved, but because the truth had finally settled over everyone inside it like a second skin.

"You’re really him," the young werewolf whispered again, as if saying it out loud might make it less real. "God."

Lucifer gave a small shrug, the unremarkable face he wore still calm. "Tonight? I’m the bartender. Tomorrow? We’ll see."

The grey-haired vampire let out a shaky breath. "And you’ve been listening to us. To all of us. For weeks."

"I have." Lucifer picked up a new glass. The rag moved in slow, deliberate circles. "You talk more when you think no one important is listening. That’s useful."

Kaelen finally lifted his glass and drained it in one go. The burn didn’t seem to register. "The brothers. Cain and Seth. You already knew."

"I knew pieces." Lucifer’s voice stayed even. "Now I have more. Enough to decide."

The Remnant spoke from her booth, her ancient voice cutting through the tension. "Decide what, exactly? Which side you’re on?"

Lucifer looked at her. For the first time that night, something like a real smile touched his lips — small, sharp, and gone in an instant. "There are no sides anymore. Not the way you think. Cain is the first murderer. Seth is the first cursed survivor. Both carry pieces of the old story. Both are mine in different ways."

"Yours," Kaelen repeated, tasting the word.

"Mine." Lucifer’s tone left no room for argument. "The Celestial Court wants them for old debts. Seraphina wants revenge on Mabel and everything that followed the Flood. And you — all of you — are caught in the middle because you chose bloodlines over peace."

The door opened again.

This time it didn’t hesitate. Athena stepped through, grey eyes scanning the room once before locking onto Lucifer. She wore simple robes that somehow looked regal in the dim light. Behind her, Medusa followed, snakes calm but alert.

The bar went dead silent.

Athena crossed to the counter without a word. She stopped beside Kaelen, who instinctively leaned away. Medusa took the stool on Lucifer’s other side.

"You’re here," Athena said. It wasn’t a question.

"I am." Lucifer set a clean glass in front of her. "Drink?" ℴ

Athena shook her head. "We need to talk. The Celestial Court—"

"I know." Lucifer poured anyway. Something lighter. Golden. "Seraphina. Old grudges. Cain and Seth moving. The whole board lighting up at once."

Medusa’s snakes stirred. "Khaos told us you might be... occupied."

Lucifer chuckled. Low. Dry. "She made her point. Silas won’t be reporting back."

Kaelen made a small choking sound. The young werewolf looked like he wanted to sink through the floor.

Athena leaned closer, voice low enough that only Lucifer (and perhaps Medusa) could hear clearly. "This isn’t just another pantheon squabble. The Court sees your ascension as an insult to the old order. They believe if they punish Cain and Seth publicly, they can reassert control. Remind everyone that Heaven still has teeth."

"They’re wrong." Lucifer’s red eyes — the disguise slipping just enough for those who knew how to look — flickered with something ancient. "Heaven has me. And I don’t need teeth when I am the jaw."

Medusa smiled. It wasn’t kind. "Then what do you want to do, husband?"

Lucifer looked around the bar. At the trembling werewolf. The stunned vampire. Kaelen trying to look smaller. The Remnant watching with centuries of weariness in her gaze.

"I want to finish my shift," he said simply. "Then we talk to the brothers. Both of them. Separately. No one else dies tonight because of old grudges if I can help it."

Athena studied him. "You’re still trying to save them."

"I’m trying to make them understand what they are now." Lucifer wiped the counter. "The first sons of man. Under a new God who was once the first rebel. They might listen."

Medusa laughed softly. "And if they don’t?"

Lucifer’s smile returned, sharper this time. "Then Khaos can make her point again. Or I will."

He turned to the room at large.

"Last call," he announced. "Drink what you have. The bar will be here tomorrow. The war... that might not wait."

No one moved to leave immediately. They were all still processing the fact that they had spent weeks pouring their hearts out to God Himself.

The young werewolf finally stood. He approached the counter on shaky legs and placed a crumpled bill on the wood.

"Thank you," he said. "For listening."

Lucifer took the money and slid it back. "Keep it. And come back. Stories are still welcome here."

One by one, they filed out. Kaelen lingered longest, giving Lucifer a long, unreadable look before nodding once and leaving.

When the bar was empty except for Athena and Medusa, Lucifer let the disguise drop fully. Black hair. Red eyes. The presence that made reality pay attention.

Athena stepped around the counter and into his arms. Medusa joined a moment later, her head resting against his shoulder.

"Centuries of this," Athena murmured. "And you still choose to pour drinks in a hidden bar."

Lucifer kissed the top of her head, then Medusa’s. "Someone has to listen. Even God needs to remember what it feels like to be small sometimes."

Medusa’s voice was soft. "The Celestial Court won’t give you that luxury for long."

"No," Lucifer agreed. "They won’t. But tonight? Tonight we go home. Tomorrow we talk to Cain. Then Seth. Then we decide how much of the old story we let repeat."

He looked toward the door, where the night waited.

"And if Seraphina wants a war with the new God..."

He smiled.

"...she can have one."
