Chapter 133: Chapter 126: The Sisters’ Battlefield
Jiang Qian’s car and the taxi carrying Lin Zhengran passed each other on the road.
Of course, Lin Zhengran saw the familiar car from his taxi. Jiang Qian, in turn, spotted the figure inside, and her expression shifted.
The taxi disappeared from sight, and the Rolls-Royce came to a stop.
A smile played on Jiang Jingshi’s red lips. She crossed her arms, watching with curiosity as Jiang Qian and Fang Meng got out of the car.
Jiang Qian walked up to her sister, her gaze icy and her presence imposing.
But despite her gentle demeanor, Jiang Jingshi’s presence was no less powerful; she held her ground completely.
Her tone was deliberately, almost unnaturally, gentle. "Qianqian? What brings you here so late at night? Taking Meng out for a spin?"
Jiang Qian’s elegant brows knitted together. She scanned the area until her eyes landed on a pet shop with its lights off but its door still ajar.
Jiang Qian clenched her fists. ’So this is where my sister just met with Lin Zhengran.’
’Trust her to find a place this secluded.’
The two sisters stood there, staring daggers at each other. Sparks seemed to fly between their gazes, and the air crackled with tension. Neither was willing to back down.
The only one not involved was Fang Meng, who had already checked out of the situation.
She stood there, pulled a carrot from her pocket, and took a bite.
CRUNCH, CRUNCH. She just munched away, enjoying the show.
Besides, her job for the day was done. The Eldest Miss and the Second Miss had been at each other’s throats since they were little; it was nothing new. You just had to get used to it.
Jiang Qian said, "You knew who he was all along, didn’t you? That’s why you deliberately kept me from coming."
Jiang Jingshi looked at her younger sister with a gentle smile. "I don’t know what my dearest sister is talking about. And what do you mean, ’deliberately kept you from coming’? I don’t understand."
"Why are you still playing dumb? I’m talking about our arranged marriage!"
"Oh, that. I didn’t know who he was before. I only found out the night Grandpa came. Besides, what I was doing today was very important to me. Of course I couldn’t allow any interruptions."
Jiang Qian stared intently at Jiang Jingshi. "Important?!"
"Yes, of course it was important. It was a date."
From behind them, Fang Meng quietly interjected, "If I can just say something... as for when the Eldest Miss found out it was Lin Zhengran, she’s telling the truth, Qianqian. She really did only find out the night Grandpa visited."
Jiang Qian retorted, "But he’s my classmate! We promised when we were kids that we wouldn’t interfere in each other’s lives or with the people around us. You broke the rule!"
Jiang Jingshi laughed.
"Qianqian, we did say that, but don’t you think what you’re saying now is a little ridiculous? It’s true I only found out it was Lin Zhengran the day Grandpa came, but we’ve known for a long time that our marriage prospect was a high school student."
Jiang Jingshi scoffed. "Besides, your argument doesn’t hold water. Lin Zhengran is my fiancé. By showing up today and interrupting my date with him, aren’t you the one interfering in my personal life? You broke the rule, too."
"What did you say? I’m interfering in your personal life?"
"Aren’t you? And I’ll say it again, and a third time if I have to. You interrupted my date, Qianqian! You interrupted my date with my fiancé."
Fang Meng knew that Qianqian was at a disadvantage in this argument. This time, the Eldest Miss actually had a solid case, whereas Qianqian...
Jiang Qian demanded, "Since when was Lin Zhengran your fiancé?!"
Jiang Jingshi said, full of confidence, "Of course he’s mine! Who else’s would he be? Yours? He was meant for me years ago. So what if some accident allowed you to step in for a while? That night, I asked you twice if you wanted to give him back to me, and you agreed both times."
"But I didn’t know it was Lin Zhengran!"
"Now you’re just being unreasonable. You’re the one who refused to look that night. And so what if it is Lin Zhengran? Are you saying you wouldn’t have let me have him if you’d known? Don’t tell me you like him? Aren’t you always going on at home about how you don’t?"
Jiang Qian knew her argument was weak. "Then what about you! You think you like Lin Zhengran? You don’t even know him! Since you don’t like him, there was no reason to meet him today. It’s not like you two will actually get together, so what was the point? Couldn’t you have just made a phone call?"
"He’s the grandson of Grandpa’s old army buddy. A phone call would have been incredibly rude. Think about it—even you didn’t just call him, did you? And now you’re telling me I should have? Qianqian, you’re getting flustered."
Before Jiang Qian could respond, Jiang Jingshi continued, "Besides, who says I don’t like Lin Zhengran? Or that I don’t know him? I do know him. And I do like him. In fact, I like him a lot. I’ve decided to be with him. I’ve decided to marry him. What are you going to do about it?"
"Jiang Jingshi, what did you just say?!" Jiang Qian couldn’t believe her sister would be so blunt. "Do you even believe your own words?!"
"I said what I said, Jiang Qian! And why wouldn’t I believe it? I really like him. In the future, I’m going to have dear Zhengran’s baby. We’ll have our child call you ’Auntie.’ If it’s a girl, we’ll name her Lin Shishi."
"In your dreams! I will never agree to this! I won’t let you be with him!"
"That’s laughable. What does it matter if you agree or not? The worst you can do is not show up to the wedding. We’ll just show you the video."
Jiang Qian clenched her fists, glaring at Jiang Jingshi through gritted teeth. With her arms still crossed, Jiang Jingshi’s hands tightened on her own biceps, her gaze just as sharp as she stared back at her sister.
They were so close their foreheads were nearly touching.
Jiang Qian snarled, "Jiang Jingshi, ever since we were little, all you’ve ever done is take my things! This isn’t the first time. But I’m warning you, I can let other things slide, but when it comes to Lin Zhengran, don’t even think about it!"
"Why do you act like he belongs to you, Qianqian? I usually let you have your way because I’m good-natured, but did you really think I would indulge you on this? Do you think I’m afraid of you?!"
The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. "You let me have my way?"
"What? How many times have I taken care of you since we were kids?"
"Is ’taking care of me’ what you call picking on me, stealing my things, and trying to one-up me in everything since we were kids?! If that’s the case, then I’ve ’taken care of’ you plenty of times, too! And I mean I actually took care of things. How many times did I have to be your scapegoat for all the trouble you caused when we were little?"
"You were my scapegoat? What about that multi-million-yuan antique vase I broke when we were little? Didn’t I knock it over because I was dodging something you threw at me? Weren’t you the one who started it?"
"Well, who told you to dodge? And why did I throw it? Wasn’t it because you had nothing better to do that day than eat my snacks!"
"Your snacks? Dad bought those! When did they become yours?!"
"Dad bought them for me! They’re my favorite!"
"Nonsense! Dad was buying those for me before you were even born!"
Listening from the back, Fang Meng felt the topic had gone completely off the rails. ’What in the world are they even arguing about now...’
’Then again,’ she thought, ’this argument was never going to have a resolution anyway. They probably don’t even know what they’re fighting about anymore. They just can’t stand each other.’
Half an hour later, the argument paused, but the two sisters still glared at each other, neither willing to concede.
Jiang Qian knew she was losing ground and just wanted to end it. "Anyway, you’ve had your meeting. Don’t see Lin Zhengran again. The whole arranged marriage business is over."
Jiang Jingshi simply asked, "Says who?"
"What else could you possibly..." Jiang Qian trailed off, her eyes suddenly freezing on something. She stepped closer to Jiang Jingshi.
She stared at her sister’s lips. The lipstick on the right side was noticeably faded. Jiang Qian reached out and gently touched the spot. "Your lipstick looks a little faint today. It’s almost like..."
A blush crept up Jiang Jingshi’s face. "Like it smeared onto something, right? Well, you guessed it. It got on my fiancé’s shoulder. Just a moment ago, when he was hugging me..."
Jiang Qian, who had been ready to stop arguing, felt her eyes widen in shock. "Hugged...?" she whispered, before gritting her teeth and looking up at her sister. "Jiang Jingshi!"
