Military protection. Infrastructure. Modern medical aid. A permanent forward operating base. Exclusive mineral extraction rights with royalties.

To any impoverished settlement on the verge of annihilation, it sounded like an impossible miracle. But for the leadership of the Ironclaw Tribe, the weight of history was far too heavy to ignore.

The two senior elders standing behind Lyra shifted nervously. Their ears were pinned flat against their hair, their eyes darting between John’s composed expression and the heavily armed Delta operators standing guard near the tent flap.

Lyra stared at the glowing holographic map for a long moment before slowly lifting her gaze to meet John’s eyes.

Her amber pupils were sharp, guarded, and filled with the fierce instinct of a ruler whose clan had just barely escaped extinction.

"Commander Smith," Lyra began, her tone measured and calm. "What you and your men have done today cannot be measured in words. You saved our cubs. You tended our wounded. You shattered an imperial crusade fleet that would have wiped our bloodline from this continent. For that, the Ironclaw Tribe owes you an eternal debt of blood."

She paused, leaning forward against the metal table.

"However... I am now the sole leader of this tribe. Keith is gone, and the survival of every single soul out there rests entirely on my shoulders. So I must ask you plainly: how do I know this alliance is not simply a conquest in disguise?"

The tent went dead silent.

Behind her, the elderly feline elder cleared his throat and added in a raspy voice, "The human kingdoms across the eastern ocean once offered our ancestors trade treaties and friendship pacts. Within ten years, those trade routes became military highways. Within twenty, our villages were taxed into starvation. Within thirty, our people were put in iron collars. Humans always speak of partnership until they build their walls around us."

Lyra nodded in agreement, keeping her gaze locked firmly on John.

"We demi-humans have learned through centuries of bloodshed that human promises are as fragile as morning frost," Lyra continued. "You ask for land to build a fortress. You ask for rights to our minerals. To my elders, this looks like the exact same playbook the Holy Solarian Empire used before they launched their crusade. What guarantees do we have that your soldiers will not simply turn their thunder-weapons on us once your base is completed?"

Outside, the distant rumble of transport trucks and medical equipment could be heard as the camp operated around the clock.

John didn’t show the slightest hint of anger or offense. In fact, a faint, appreciative smirk touched the corner of his lips.

He preferred dealing with a pragmatic leader who asked hard questions over an emotional puppet who agreed to everything out of blind gratitude. A ruler who blindly signed treaties without thinking about tomorrow was a liability.

"That’s a fair question," John replied, leaning back slightly in his tactical folding chair. "In fact, if you didn’t ask it, I’d be worried about your competence as a leader."

John placed his forearms on the table and looked directly at Lyra and the two elders.

"Let’s start with the most basic reality: power," John said bluntly. "Look at what happened out on the bay an hour ago. My air assets wiped out three heavy Solarian galleons and an entire armored regiment in under fifteen minutes. If my goal was to conquer the Ironclaw Tribe, take your land, enslave your people, and harvest your minerals, why would I bother sitting in a tent negotiating with you?"

Lyra’s breath caught slightly in her throat.

"I have gunships that can level this entire valley from fifteen thousand feet in the air," John continued smoothly. "I have mechanized infantry equipped with automatic rifles that tear through enchanted plate armor like paper. If I wanted to conquer this land by force, nobody on this entire coastline could stop me. I wouldn’t need a treaty. I wouldn’t need your permission. And I certainly wouldn’t waste medical supplies, antibiotics, and clean rations treating your wounded."

The elderly feline elder shuddered, unable to find a single word to refute that brutal truth.

"The reason we are having this conversation," John said, tapping the table, "is because my nation does not operate like the feudal empires of this world. Subjugation through slavery and violent oppression is completely obsolete. An oppressed population constantly rebels, sabotages supply lines, and forces you to waste valuable troops on garrison duty. But a willing ally? A sovereign partner who trades with you and benefits from your presence? That creates stability."

The elders exchanged low, hurried whispers behind Lyra, their ears twitching as they weighed the stark reality. Every word the foreign commander spoke rang with undeniable logic. He held overwhelming, terrifying power, yet offered them dignity, sovereignty, and survival instead of conquest.

Lyra closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting the grief and tension settle into cold, resolute focus. When she opened them, her amber gaze was crystal clear.

"You speak with a clarity and honor no imperial lord has ever shown us, Commander," Lyra said, her voice filled with quiet strength. "The Ironclaw Tribe will not wither in fear of what might happen when we are offered a future where our cubs can thrive without the threat of chains."

She stepped forward and placed her hand flat against the table. "On behalf of the Ironclaw Tribe, I accept your terms. We agree to the alliance."

"Then by my authority as Supreme Commander, the United States of America formally enters into a binding mutual defense and economic partnership with the Ironclaw Tribe."

Lyra grasped John’s gloved hand firmly, sealing the covenant.

With that single handshake, the first formal alliance between the United States and the native nations of this world was forged.

John released her hand and gave a polite nod toward the two elders.

"Now that the official treaty is settled," John said, lowering his voice into a serious, confidential tone, "I’d like to request a moment of your time alone, Lady Lyra. There are sensitive strategic matters regarding the empire that we need to discuss in private."
