I Was Summoned as the Weakest Hero, But I Awakened a Military System
Chapter 40: Possible Diplomatic Ties?
The heavy rotor wash from the departing Black Hawk whipped dust and gray ash across the cobblestones as the transport lifted off, carrying the hooded imperial captives away toward the island base.
Across the beachhead and ruined docks, the operation had settled into a smooth, methodical mop-up. Combat engineers and mechanized infantrymen were herding the disarmed Solarian prisoners into temporary holding pens, while Navy corpsmen fanned out through the smoking alleys with medical kits, treating the wounded locals and cutting the chains off captured demi-human families.
The low, distant rumble of the orbiting AC-130 and the two Apaches faded as they pulled out of their combat orbits, heading back across the channel to rearm and refuel.
John lowered his SCAR-H to a relaxed low-ready stance and surveyed the devastation. The air still smelled heavily of burnt pine, charred thatch, and spent brass.
Heavy combat boots crunched against the rubble behind him.
"Boss," a deep, gravelly voice called out.
John turned to see Sergeant First Class Ritcher walking up. Standing well over six-foot-three with a broad, muscular frame filling out his plate carrier, Ritcher had his tactical helmet pushed slightly back, his weathered face streaked with soot and sweat. He carried a customized Mk 18 carbine slung casually across his chest.
"Situation report, Ritcher," John said.
"Perimeter’s completely locked down, sir," Ritcher replied, gesturing with a gloved hand toward the center of the shattered market square. "Fireteams swept the remaining alleys. No further hostile contacts. We’ve liberated roughly three hundred captives from the cages near the docks. But more importantly—we found who’s running what’s left of this settlement."
John raised an eyebrow. "The tribal leader?"
"Yes, sir. Or at least, the highest-ranking survivor," Ritcher said, his tone turning serious. "Local fighters confirmed the big grey wolf warrior lying dead by the square was their chieftain. The woman standing over him was his mate and co-ruler. She’s currently trying to organize the wounded, but she’s on edge. Our boys kept their distance so we didn’t spook her."
John followed Ritcher’s gaze toward the center of the square.
Standing amid the splintered timber of a collapsed watchtower was the tall, striking beastkin woman. Her long, midnight-black hair had deep violet undertones catching the dimming sunlight, cascading past her waist. Her pointed wolf ears twitched cautiously, and her dark, lush tail swayed behind the hem of her torn, embroidered gown.
She held a curved silver scimitar firmly in one hand, standing protectively in front of several trembling young demi-humans. Her golden amber eyes were fixed squarely on John, watching his every move with a mix of raw grief, defiance, and profound shock.
"Let’s go make contact," John said, flicking his weapon’s safety switch on and letting the rifle hang against his chest rig to appear non-threatening.
"Right behind you, boss," Ritcher replied, signaling two other operators to hold back and give them space.
John crossed the blood-stained gravel at a slow, deliberate pace. As he drew within ten paces, the surviving wolf and feline guards bristled, raising crude spears with shaking hands, but the woman held up a slender, blood-streaked arm, gesturing for her warriors to stand down.
She took a slow breath, her chest rising sharply beneath the dark trim of her dress.
John stopped five paces away, meeting her guarded, golden-eyed gaze with a steady, calm expression.
"Good day, ma’am. I’m the leader of this militia who intervened with your situation," John said. "My name is John Smith. You and your people don’t need to hold onto those weapons around us. We’re not here to take your land, and we’re certainly not here to take slaves."
Lyra stared at him, her sharp amber eyes searching his calm face for any hint of deceit. Her grip on the silver scimitar loosened slightly, though her body remained rigid with lingering shock.
"John Smith..." she repeated, testing the foreign cadence of his name on her tongue. Her voice was hoarse with grief, yet filled with a natural, regal poise. "You bear the appearance of a human... yet you command forces that destroyed the Solarian army in mere moments. The empire calls all mankind the chosen children of their Goddess. Are you not one of them?"
"Not even close," John replied bluntly, a faint trace of cold disdain passing through his eyes. "Their Goddess and their empire are my enemies. I have my own reasons for tearing their crusade apart, but when we saw what they were doing to an unprovoked settlement, we had no intention of sitting by and watching."
Lyra’s gaze drifted over his shoulder, looking past the heavily armed operators to where American field medics were bandaging wounded wolfkin warriors and handing out clean water to shivering children. For hours, she had prepared herself to die defending the ashes of her home. To see the mighty Holy Solarian Empire utterly shattered—and the terrifying foreign army extending medical aid instead of chains—was almost impossible to comprehend.
She looked down at the lifeless body of Keith lying in the dirt, her jaw tightening as a fresh wave of raw sorrow washed over her features. Slowly, with deliberate grace, she slid her curved scimitar back into the leather sheath at her hip.
"I am Lyra, co-ruler of the Ironclaw Tribe," she spoke, meeting John’s gaze once more. "My husband fell defending our cubs, and our home is reduced to cinders. But whatever your reasons for coming across the sea, you saved what remains of our kin from eternal servitude."
She lowered her head in a subtle, respectful gesture of gratitude before looking back up with fierce determination. "If your war is against the Holy Solarian Empire... then the Ironclaw will listen to what you have to say."
Her fellow tribe members bowed deeply behind her, pressing their fists over their hearts in raw reverence, their ears flattened in solemn gratitude.
John observed the gesture.
In this world, the imperial forces dismissed the Beastkin as wild pests and primitive livestock to be harvested for slave labor. But to John, this territory held defined borders, an organized defense force, ancestral laws, and recognized sovereign leaders.
In the eyes of modern international law, the Ironclaw Tribe wasn’t a mere pack of wild demi-humans.
They were an established sovereign nation.
And this moment was officially the United States military’s first formal diplomatic contact on the Western Continent.
"You don’t need to bow to us, Lady Lyra," John said, extending a hand to motion for her to rise. "My forces operate under strict rules of engagement. We recognize your sovereignty over this territory, and we treat the Ironclaw Tribe as a legitimate governing authority of this land."
Lyra lifted her head, her sharp amber eyes widening in genuine astonishment.
For centuries, every interaction between demi-humans and the human kingdoms had been defined by arrogance, subjugation, and racial supremacy. The Holy Solarian Empire never recognized treaties with non-humans, seeing any agreement with a ’beast’ as an insult to Goddess Viona. Yet here was a human commander—wielding terrifying, world-shattering military power that had obliterated an entire crusade fleet in minutes—openly addressing her as an equal head of state.
"Sovereign... authority?" Lyra repeated, the weight of the foreign term sinking into her chest. "You view our people as an equal nation?"
"We do," John affirmed.. "Which means we intend to conduct our relations through proper diplomatic channels. We will provide immediate humanitarian aid, emergency rations, and medical treatment for your wounded. In exchange, once your people are secure, I would like to sit down with you and discuss formal trade, military defense pacts, and a mutual coalition against the Holy Solarian Empire."
