The twin Patriot missiles tore through the cloud deck at Mach 4. Guided by the X-band radar from the bluff, their tracking seekers locked onto the massive radar cross-section barreling down the mountain corridor.

Inside the radar trailer, Torres leaned forward, his fingers gripping the console.

"MIM-104 inbound. Time to intercept: eight seconds... five... three..."

Twenty-five miles out from the harbor, the sky ripped open in a double thunderclap.

BOOM! BOOM!

Two blinding white fireballs bloomed against the gray mountain backdrop. The proximity fuzes detonated their eighty-four-kilogram fragmentation warheads dead on target. Thousands of steel shrapnel pellets blasted outward in an expanding sphere of pure kinetic destruction, shredding the clouds.

"Direct intercept!" Torres shouted. "Dual splash confirmed!"

"Wait!" Vance barked, grabbing Torres’s shoulder and staring at the scope. "Look at the track! It didn’t break up!"

The yellow track block on the screen hadn’t shattered into falling debris. It was still there. And it was still moving.

Out in the sky, the rolling black smoke of the blast cleared.

Ignisrax roared—a sound that violently rattled the cockpit glass of Sterling’s F-15E miles away.

The Patriot warheads had struck hard. The blast had torn away dozens of thick crimson scales across the dragon’s broad chest, exposing raw, blackened muscle. A jagged gash on its right wing dripped boiling, molten-red blood that hissed and smoked as it fell through the air like burning napalm.

Yet, the ancient tyrant of Mount Caelum did not fall.

Its colossal bones, forged by centuries of subterranean pressure and primordial mana, held together. The imperial control spike in its skull surged with blinding violet electricity, violently overriding the creature’s agony and driving it into a rabid, unyielding bloodlust.

Instead of slowing down, the dragon beat its massive leathery wings, pushing through the shockwave. Its airspeed jumped from three hundred knots to nearly four hundred, descending steeply toward the coastal plain.

"Target is still flying!" Torres yelled, panic bleeding into his headset. "It took two direct hits from PAC-2s and it’s still closing! Range twenty miles! Heading straight for the harbor!"

"TOC, Eagle One-One is engaging!" Sterling shouted over the frequency.

Up at twenty thousand feet, the F-15E pilot wasn’t going to let the monster reach the fleet. He shoved his twin throttles into full afterburner. The Pratt & Whitney engines roared, kicking the heavy fighter past the speed of sound as he rolled in from high perch behind the descending leviathan.

"Master arm on. Fox Three!"

Sterling squeezed the trigger on his flight stick.

WHOOSH!

An AIM-120D AMRAAM rocketed off the underwing pylon, its active radar seeker activating instantly as it streaked toward the dragon’s tail. Seconds later, Sterling fired a second missile.

WHOOSH!

"Fox Three, two away!"

The two air-to-air missiles closed the distance in seconds. Ignisrax didn’t evade. The first AMRAAM slammed directly into the meat of its left hind leg, detonating with a concussive crack that blew chunks of scaled flesh into the slipstream. The second missile punched into the base of its thick tail, severing jagged dorsal spines in an eruption of fire.

More boiling blood sprayed into the clouds. The beast shrieked in rage, its massive body pitching violently in the air—yet it remained airborne. Its leathery wings caught the rising ocean thermals, and its fiery eyes stayed locked onto the glistening towers of Port Solis below.

Down on the ground, the coastal defenses threw everything they had into the sky.

"Battery Bravo, ripple fire!" Vance yelled through the comms. "C-RAM stations, spin up!"

From the beachheads and harbor revetments, four Phalanx 20mm Gatling cannons began to howl, spitting a continuous, red-hot stream of four thousand five hundred tungsten rounds per minute into the lower sky. Further inland, Stinger missiles left shoulder-fired tubes, leaving thin white corkscrews of smoke across the foothills.

Dozens of 20mm shells sparked and shattered against the dragon’s rocky underbelly. A Stinger missile detonated against its thick snout, blackening its horns and tearing open its upper lip.

Ignisrax was bleeding from twenty different wounds. Black smoke trailed from its torn scales. But the closer it got to the city, the more its primordial fury took over.

Sterling saw the ground fire failing to stop the beast’s momentum. The dragon was dipping beneath seven thousand feet, lined up for a lethal dive into the palace district and the docks.

"I’m moving in with guns," Sterling grunted, pulling hard Gs as he banked the Strike Eagle down onto the dragon’s six o’clock.

He lined up the massive crimson silhouette in his heads-up display. The green aiming reticle settled squarely over the exposed, bleeding wound on the dragon’s neck.

"Eat this, you oversized lizard," Sterling growled, squeezing the cannon trigger.

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTT!

The internal M61A2 Vulcan cannon roared. A lethal stream of 20mm high-explosive incendiary rounds chewed across the dragon’s back. Flesh ripped, bone cracked, and a fresh geyser of molten blood burst into the air, spattering across the sky.

The dragon shuddered. Its flight path faltered.

Then, it did something that defied every flight parameter in Sterling’s computer.

Ignisrax didn’t bank. It didn’t breathe fire from its maw.

Instead, the dragon’s entire colossal body suddenly flared with a terrifying, incandescent white radiance. The ancient mana core inside its chest, pushed to the absolute brink by the violet torment spike, unleashed a full-body thermal purge.

VUUUUUUM.

The air around the dragon didn’t just heat up—it ignited.

In a fraction of a second, an invisible sphere of pure, radiant heat exploded outward in a three-hundred-meter radius. The ambient temperature surrounding the dragon instantly spiked past three thousand degrees Celsius.

Sterling’s cockpit warning systems screamed in total, deafening unison.

WARNING: SYSTEM OVERHEAT.WARNING: CANOPY STRUCTURAL FAILURE.ENGINE ONE COMPRESSOR STALL.ENGINE TWO FIRE.

"What the—?!" Sterling gasped.

Even fifty yards back, the wall of radiant heat hit the F-15E like the shockwave of a thermonuclear detonation.

The fighter’s acrylic canopy crazed instantly, turning white with microscopic fractures before melting like soft wax. The twin engines, starved of cold air and inhaling superheated, oxygen-depleted gas, suffered catastrophic uncontained turbine failures. Turbine blades melted inside their housings, tearing through the engine cowlings in a storm of molten metal.

The composite panels along the wings blistered and charred black. The avionics bay behind the cockpit simply cooked, frying circuit boards and shorting out the fly-by-wire controls.

The stick went totally dead in Sterling’s hand. The HUD vanished into black glass. Smoke filled the cockpit, and the smell of melting rubber and burning wire choked his lungs.

"Eagle One-One is hit! Total hydraulic failure! Both engines destroyed!" Sterling yelled, coughing violently as heat blistered his neck through his flight suit. "I have no control! Ejecting, ejecting, ejecting!"

Sterling reached down between his knees with both hands and yanked the yellow-and-black striped ejection handle.

BANG!

The canopy exploded away into the roaring slipstream, and the ACES II ejection seat rocketed out of the crippled fighter on a pillar of rocket fire, launching Sterling high into the air.

Behind him, the Strike Eagle tumbled out of control, a flaming dart of twisted aluminum that plummeted down into the uninhabited dunes south of the harbor, erupting in a massive fireball.

Sterling swung beneath his nylon canopy, watching the burning wreckage of his multimillion-dollar fighter disintegrate against the sand dunes below.

"Shit!" he coughed into his oxygen mask, his scorched skin stinging against the cool sea breeze.

High above, there was no time to breathe. He craned his neck, looking toward the north.

Ignisrax hadn’t even looked back at the falling debris. The ancient beast had pushed through the air defense perimeter, trailing black smoke and glowing droplets of burning blood. Its massive, torn wings caught the low coastal thermals, dipping beneath three thousand feet. It was a flying mountain of armor and fury, banking hard along the coastline and locking its burning golden eyes onto the sprawling white stone towers of Port Solis.

Down across the bay, the silence was shattered by a sound the ancient capital had never heard before.

WUUUUU-OOOOOH! WUUUUU-OOOOOH!

The base-wide air raid sirens wailed from rooftops, watchtowers, and coastal gun revetments. The mechanical howling echoed off the palace walls and rippled across the water where American warships and transport vessels were anchored.

Inside the tactical operations center at the Grand Palace, screens flashed violent amber.

"Air track is inside the inner ring!" a controller yelled, slamming his palms against the console. "Eagle One-One is down, pilot punch confirmed! Hostile is crossing the bay boundary! Time to impact: sixty seconds!"

John Smith pushed past the double oak doors and stepped out onto the wide palace balcony. Behind him, Richter gripped the stone railing, his knuckles white, while Rin followed closely behind.

The moment Rin stepped into the open air, her entire body went rigid. The color drained from her face, her breath hitching in pure terror.

"No..." Rin whispered, her trembling hands clutching the railing. "It can’t be... why is he here?!"

"What is that thing, Rin?" John asked, his voice dead calm, though his hand rested firmly on the grip of his sidearm.

"Ignisrax..." she stammered, horror cracking her voice. "I read about it in history. The Tyrant of Mount Caelum! Viona and Leon... they spent months sealing him in the volcano to use against the Demon Lord! His scales don’t break! His breath melts iron! They... they unleashed the calamity on the city!"

The temperature in the air began to rise rapidly. A heavy, suffocating scent of ozone, brimstone, and burning ash rolled over the bay like a physical wave.

Down on the stone quays and fortified docks, soldiers scrambled. Heavy machine guns racked their bolts. M1A2 Abrams tanks parked along the boulevard traversed their massive turrets upward, while Avenger air defense vehicles spun their Stinger pods toward the sea.

Then, the clouds above the harbor tore open.

ROOOAAARRRRRR!

A primeval roar shook the foundations of the ancient stone city, rattling every glass window in the imperial palace.

Ignisrax burst through the low smoke ceiling directly over the outer harbor.

The dragon was colossal. Its three-hundred-foot frame blotted out the midday sun, casting a massive, terrifying shadow across the fleet below. Its torn crimson scales glowed like cooled magma, trails of black smoke billowed from its wounded flank, and the water in the bay began to boil and hiss as the beast flew just two hundred feet above the masts of the transport ships.

The red dragon flared its wings, checking its downward dive with a thunderous gust of wind that threw whitecaps across the harbor.

Its colossal horned head snapped toward the Grand Palace, its burning yellow eyes locking onto the high balcony where John Smith stood. In the deep hollows of its chest, an ominous orange glow began to churn, rising rapidly up its throat like liquid fire.

The living calamity had arrived at Port Solis.
