I Transmigrated as a Peasant, but My System Wanna Make Me a Duke!
Chapter 115: Blue Whale Town’s Request
Chapter 115: Chapter 115: Blue Whale Town’s Request
The Ability to transmit information between man and nature, to communicate with or manipulate animals—that appeared to be Colson’s power.
’But Colson’s behavior seems to run completely counter to the description of a Silent.’
’A talkative, incessantly chattering Silent?’
Vili found it all very strange.
"What is it?"
Olay asked, noticing Vili’s expression.
Vili shook his head. "It’s nothing. I just didn’t expect there to be so many Extraordinary Professions besides the Knight Extraordinary Power."
Olay, not suspecting a thing, nodded as well. "That’s true. The reason I was unwilling to mention the power of Secret Masters before you were promoted to Knight was that I was worried you would get distracted. No matter which Extraordinary Power you cultivate, singular focus is the only shortcut."
"Teacher, among all the Secret Masters, which Extraordinary Profession is more powerful? Or, to put it another way, between Secret Masters and Knights, who is superior?"
Vili voiced the question on his mind.
"There are no powerful Extraordinary Professions, only powerful Extraordinary individuals. Even if you commit only to the path of a Knight, you can defeat a powerful Secret Master. Our Lanton Duchy’s Duke Vibillus is a powerful Knight who stands at the pinnacle of the Extraordinary."
Olay was also trying to bolster Vili’s confidence.
Vili nodded, though he wasn’t particularly concerned about it. ’I have the Title Attribute Panel,’ he thought. ’I’m sure I’ll unlock new titles as I explore new fields in the future.’
Just as Vili and Olay were conversing, a guard knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Olay called out.
The guard walked in, bowed, and then said to Olay and Vili, "Sir Olay, Sir Vili, Knight Jarvis and Knight Condas from Blue Whale Town have arrived at the manor. The Lord Baron requests your presence."
"Jarvis and Condas are here?"
Olay was clearly surprised. He and Vili exchanged a look, and both could see the confusion and puzzlement in the other’s eyes.
Olay thought for a moment. Recalling the generous gift Jarvis had brought for the New Year, and considering it was still a month until spring, he began to form a guess.
"They must be plotting something..."
Olay said to Vili, "It’s probably related to the sea thawing and defending against the Pirates from the outer islands."
Vili heard this and agreed it was highly likely.
Although Blue Whale Town was far from the border and didn’t have to worry about wars between nations, as a coastal town on the frontier of the Lanton Duchy, it had to expend a great deal of effort every year to fend off raids from foreign Pirates.
Most of these Pirates did not belong to any nation; a large portion of them were fugitives or the descendants of fugitives. They settled on various small islands overseas, with chaotic power structures, and normally made a living by fishing and plundering merchant ships. But in the spring, when the coastal waters thawed, temporary food shortages would drive them to launch raids on the coastal towns.
Blue Whale Town was one such place, suffering this same plight year after year.
In past years, even when Blue Whale Town made preparations in advance, it was still battered by waves of Pirate attacks, leaving Baron Enton exhausted and the town’s losses unavoidable.
The arrival of Jarvis and Condas this time was, in all likelihood, on Baron Enton’s orders to request assistance.
"Let’s go and see."
Olay and Vili rose at the same time, left the Personal Guard Bureau, and rode toward the Baron’s Manor.
Upon arriving at the Baron’s Manor, a guard led them to the reception hall.
The moment they stepped inside, Vili saw Jarvis and an old man with a white beard and hair sitting together, across from Baron Kels and Bamos.
The old man was Condas, the senior Knight of Blue Whale Town.
"Knight Olay, Knight Vili."
Seeing Olay and Vili walk in, Jarvis stood up and greeted them with a smile.
He acted as if he had completely forgotten his clash with Olay, behaving as though there were no hard feelings between them.
Condas also rose. After glancing at Olay, he fixed his gaze entirely on Vili.
After returning to Blue Whale Town last time, Jarvis had informed Baron Enton and Condas that Vili from Diamond Town had been promoted to a Knight. Both of them were very surprised, because the talent Vili displayed seemed even greater than Jarvis’s own in his youth. Only Jarvis himself didn’t seem to care much.
So, upon meeting Vili now, Condas couldn’t help but give him a thorough look-over.
"Knight Condas, Knight Jarvis."
Olay returned the greeting. He wasn’t as enthusiastic as Jarvis, but he showed no hint of any negative feelings either.
Vili followed Olay’s lead with a simple gesture of courtesy.
"Knight Vili is truly young and promising,"
Condas said with a grin.
Vili merely smiled faintly and said nothing.
"Alright, everyone sit down. Now that you two have arrived, Knight Jarvis can state the purpose of his visit."
Baron Kels waved his hand, indicating they could get down to business.
Everyone took their seats, and attendants placed drinks in front of them.
"Knight Condas and I have come on the orders of Baron Enton. We hope that after the sea thaws this spring, we might obtain Baron Kels’s assistance in fending off the Pirate invasion of Blue Whale Town."
Although Jarvis was the younger of the two, he was clearly the one in charge. It was hard to tell if this was because Condas was too old to manage such affairs, or because Baron Enton placed more trust in Jarvis.
Jarvis’s words caused no stir; his purpose for coming was fully expected.
This winter had been exceptionally cold, which meant the Pirates living on the overseas archipelagos had endured a very difficult season. They had likely been suffering from supply shortages the entire time, and many may have even died in the bitter cold.
So, the moment the coast thawed, they would surely descend with the utmost greed and ferocity to plunder. The trouble awaiting Blue Whale Town would be far worse than ever before.
"However, Diamond Town is only just now recovering from the war. We do not have enough men to assist you. Please convey my apologies to Baron Enton."
Baron Kels said with a smile.
First, he greatly disliked Baron Enton as a person. Second, they had yet to present an offer that was tempting enough.
"Please, Lord Baron, do not refuse just yet."
Jarvis showed no sign of disappointment. Until a sufficient price was offered, any refusal was just part of setting the terms. "We will provide you with sufficient payment for your assistance."
"I’m sorry..."
Baron Kels’s expression remained unchanged.
Diamond Town was not short on money at the moment. Trading his men’s lives for Gold Rums was a very poor bargain for his town.
"We are willing to cede a coastal village, and also pay a sum of twenty thousand Gold Rums."
Jarvis cut Baron Kels off directly.
