Chapter 104: Primal Tablets: Proof of the World's Strongest
The Learning and Education Hall in Ikerite University served as a multidisciplinary learning facility that catered to the vast student body. Breaking away from the traditional concept of isolated towers, the structure incorporated a series of horizontal expansions, creating a spacious environment that offered ample room for both academic study and extracurricular activities.
Clusters of interior walls broke down the building's massive scale into finer, more intimate zones. Corridors, courtyards, suspended walkways, terraces, and staircases were designed to evoke modern artistic interpretations of canyons, forest trails, natural habitats, cliffs, and amphitheaters. All of this created a spectacular indoor landscape.
On the fourth floor, in the Magical Engineering Research Zone, there was a special tiered lecture hall that resembled a massive artificial valley. Interwoven with elements of mountain forests and bathed in natural light streaming in from skylights, the room offered a fresh and unique learning environment.
In this spacious hall, the tiered seating was nearly packed to capacity. Unlike the small-group compulsory classes typical of the Sages' College, this course, Overview of Magical Systems and Lineages, was mandatory for students from both the Sages' College and the College of Magical Engineering. Consequently, students from both colleges attended together for large-scale lectures.
Lance and Hyperion were sitting in the back row, and there were a few empty seats around them. Legends about the "Three Thugs of the Capital" had been circulating around campus these past few days.
As the student council's most formidable enforcers to date, they destroyed The Warrior Soul's clubhouse on their very first outing and infuriated Zirvini to the point where she chased them down with a face flushed with rage before finally bursting into tears.
"As expected of a half-demon and the infamous Lance... They look even less human than they did in the Shadow Realm." Many freshmen from the College of Magical Engineering were seeing the pair in person for the first time, so they whispered around them in awe.
While seated on the rustic wooden benches in the back row, Hyperion was studying diligently, as always. In a rare turn of events, Lance showed no signs of his usual sickly lethargy. He, too, listened to the lesson with a deeply focused intensity.
This was the only required course that didn't torment him, as it dealt almost exclusively with key theories of magic and magical engineering. Basically, it required no practical spellcasting skills.
The instructor was someone both he and Hyperion knew well: the gentle Miss Theresa. She had overseen their scheduling during the third round of the entrance exams. At the front of the lecture hall, she was just about to reach a crucial point in the lesson.
Even Lance straightened his posture.
"There are thirty-two Primal Tablets in this world. Each one represents the pinnacle of Epic grade enchanted cards, embodying the absolute apex of a specific category of magic. Unlike ordinary Epic cards that eventually fade into the annals of history, Primal Tablets endure forever and are passed down through the ages."
Theresa stood at a semicircular gray wooden lectern as she lectured in a clear, engaging voice. She raised her arm to point at the magical projection screen. An image of a stone tablet was present, along with its appraisal details.
[Wind Primal Tablet]
Category: Equipment Card
Grade: Orange (Epic)
Attribute: Wind
Tier: 5
The Wind Primal Tablet is indestructible. It can only be soulbound to a living being, with a limit of one Primal Tablet per person. It grants a comprehensive enhancement to all Wind attribute magic, techniques, equipment, and summoned entities. The bond is severed upon the owner's death.
All things in the world shall eventually be reborn. The wind will blow across this land for eternity.
The rotating three dimensional projection revealed a slender, compact, ancient stone tablet. Its streamlined edges and faint magical patterns seemed to whisper tales spanning millennia. The stone had a smooth, lustrous texture, and its color had been deepened and enriched by the passage of time.
Amid the intricate, mysterious magical runes, tiny spirals, resembling the trails of galaxies streaking across the night sky, shone with a brilliant yet mysterious light. The object encapsulated a wisdom and profound power that not even the annihilation of the world could erase.
"The one shown here is the Wind Primal Tablet held by Dean Lawrence, High Priest of the Church of the Goddess of Fate. It appears both like a divine creation and a relic left by ancient sages, yet it clearly bears traces of modification via magical engineering."
Theresa continued, "For the magical engineering students, simply observing the actual tablet in person can provide profound insights into the crafting of this type of magical artifact."
As her voice trailed off, the classroom erupted in a flurry of discussion. Theresa stood at the podium, smiling calmly. She opened her water bottle and took a small sip to soothe her throat.
The lecture hall was designed with an open, spacious feel and a wide field of view, lending itself well to a seminar-style format. Students were encouraged to voice their questions and ideas, engaging in active discussion and interaction with the teacher.
Theresa understood that this type of course required sparking the students' interest and allowing them time for free discussion, rather than relying on a one-way, lecture-style delivery. Meanwhile, the students seated next to one another were engaged in a lively buzz of conversation.
"No wonder we’ve got a graduation quest to seek out and study a Primal Tablet!"
"Some seniors looking for a shortcut have actually gone straight to the Sages' College to petition Dean Lawrence for a chance to examine his!"
However, as a guardian powerhouse of the Kingdom of Hutton and a High Priest of the Church of the Goddess of Fate, Dean Lawrence was hardly a man with time to spare.
He certainly wouldn't put his vital enchanted card, a Primal Tablet, on display like a museum exhibit for any student who happened to need it for their research. Instead, he would assign students significant public service missions for the kingdom or tasks for the Church of the Goddess of Fate. If a student successfully completed the challenge, he would grant them the opportunity to study the Primal Tablet as their reward.
Occasionally, magical engineering students or even instructors from allied nations and other institutions would come seeking Dean Lawrence. He would always set similar, fair conditions. Generally speaking, friendly, approachable powerhouses from allied nations would grant such opportunities to seekers, proposing trials much like the ones Lawrence did.
Of course, there were also Primal Tablet holders who were loners, cold-natured, or simply unreasonable. They wouldn't even deign to acknowledge the average seeker.
Lance smiled at Hyperion and wistfully sighed, "Just owning a Primal Tablet makes someone a highly respected and sought-after figure... I'd love to have one too. By the way, Hyperion, do you know of any other Primal Tablet holders besides Dean Lawrence?"
The two of them often chatted casually these days. Outside of class hours, they would frequently hang out with Frey, making the student council headquarters a spacious and comfortable place to spend time.
However, Lance's remarks had apparently touched upon a painful memory for Hyperion. A flicker of dim sorrow crossed her eyes before she quickly looked away. She was intent on hiding it from Lance, so she simply lowered her head and nodded.
