I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 87: The True Self
The void stretched outward in endless, silent layers of pale purple and absolute dark. There were no winds here, no gravity, and no passage of time, yet every heartbeat echoed like a falling boulder against the fabric of consciousness. Raphael stood motionless before his younger counterpart.
The younger version of himself... the unawakened, ordinary young man, stood bathed in a soft, melancholic light. His face bore the familiar weight of old humiliations, cramped apartment rooms, and the helpless terror of an ordinary human caught beneath the wheels of an apocalyptic world.
But as he spoke of the system, of the threshold of two hundred percent synchronization, and of the towering, throne-bound monster looming in the dark background, his voice carried an unshakeable, profound clarity.
"Understand what?" Raphael asked, his voice cutting softly through the stillness of the void.
Raphael (Old) raised his gaze, his dull grey eyes reflecting the brilliant, cold violet glow radiating from the distant, soulless entity upon the throne of skulls.
"Understand why the system chose us," Raphael (Old) answered, his voice steady despite the faint golden light beginning to flake away from his fingers. "Think about it, Raphael. Jiston is a city crawling with millions of people. There are prodigies, elite guild masters, tactical geniuses, battle-hardened veterans, and ruthless corporate tyrants who would have gladly traded their souls for this power. The system had a wide, endless variety of human beings across the continent to choose from. And yet... out of all of them, it chose us."
Raphael blinked, his sharp, analytical mind momentarily stalling. He had spent weeks treating his system integration as a mechanical reward for survival... a logical consequence of his awakening and the ruthless efficiency he had cultivated since the day he took The Iron Spire.
"Why us?" Raphael murmured, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing his sharp, aristocratic features. "We were ordinary. Weak and unawakened."
"Exactly," Raphael (Old) said, taking a slow step forward. "We were ordinary. We knew what it felt like to be pushed against a brick wall by people with power. We knew what it felt like to run from monsters, to be completely helpless, and to watch the world burn without a voice. But looking at our future self... looking at that thing sitting on the throne of skulls... that isn’t the reason the system chose us at all."
Raphael turned his head slightly toward the towering entity. The massive, soulless duplicate sat motionless, its greatsword and battle-axe hovering like silent executioners. It possessed absolute power, flawless tactical supremacy, and cold, unfeeling dominance.
"That thing," Raphael (Old) continued, pointing a trembling hand toward the throne, "is a corrupted version of what we were supposed to be. It is an accumulation of all our deepest regrets, our darkest coldness, and our forced heartlessness, stripped of everything human. That is not a world builder. That is not a Sovereign. That is a meat-puppet engineered by an unknown, selfish code to harvest a continent and leave behind an empty husk."
Raphael stared at his past self, the gravity of the revelation settling heavily over his chest. If he had let the synchronization cross the two hundred percent threshold, his consciousness would have been completely overwritten by that synthetic monarch. He would have won every war, conquered every sector, and ruled an entire continent... only to realize he was no longer human. He would have become a prisoner in his own body, serving a machine’s hidden agenda.
"You’re running out of time," Raphael (Old) said softly, looking down at his hands as the golden light intensified, eating away at his shoulders and torso. The void around them began to tremble, vibrating with a low, ominous hum as the system fought to maintain its lock.
"You have only a few seconds before I fade away entirely, and the new evolution takes permanent effect. You can either accept me, embrace who we truly are, or watch me disperse and become that bleak future waiting on the throne."
Raphael stood frozen. For weeks, he had pruned away his old weaknesses, burying his past self under layers of cold logic, sovereign armor, and ruthless tactical calculations. He had thought that casting away his humanity was the only path to survival.
"Why should I accept you?" Raphael asked, his voice tightening. "You are a weakness. You are the boy who got shoved into a brick wall, who couldn’t fight back, who died in an alleyway wishing for a miracle."
"Because I am the True Self," Raphael (Old) replied, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips even as his legs began to dissolve into golden embers. "Accept me and let’s become whole. Cast me away and lose your chance at things you will regret in the future. That being over there is an accumulation of all our darkness. But we... we are the ones who chose to stand up when the world fell apart. We are the ones who ran toward the boulder to save a child."
Raphael caught his breath. The memory of that ruined avenue, the little girl trapped under the concrete, the monstrous shadow looming overhead, and the desperate, reckless courage that made him throw himself onto the rubble without a second thought flashed vividly across his mind. That wasn’t cold strategy or a corporate calculation. That was humanity.
The void shuddered violently. A deafening mechanical alarm echoed across the space, and the towering entity on the throne suddenly shifted, its closed eyes beginning to twitch open.
"Time’s up," Raphael (Old) whispered, his form now a brilliant pillar of golden light. "Choose, Raphael."
Raphael didn’t hesitate. A profound surge of clarity washed over his consciousness. He stepped forward, breaking through the heavy spatial resistance, and reached out with both hands.
"Thanks for reaching out," Raphael said, smiling, his silver eyes shining with fierce, renewed conviction. "I was almost a goner."
He grasped his past self’s hand.
BOOM!
The moment their palms met, a blinding flare of golden-white light erupted across the entire void, shattering the dark shadows into a million glittering fragments. The void shook like glass under a hammer blow.
Across the void, the entity seated upon the dark obsidian throne of skulls finally opened its eyes. They were hollow, bottomless, and burning with a deep, crimson fury. The synthetic monarch looked down at its hands as they began to crystallize and fracture. It didn’t scream, nor did it panic. Instead, a slow, tranquil smile touched its carved lips.
"I’m glad," the entity whispered into the quiet void.
CRACK.
With a sound like shattering crystal, the future-version’s body dissolved completely into harmless, sparkling dust, scattering across the obsidian floor and vanishing.
...
High above Jiston, deep within the subterranean throne room of The Iron Spire, Raphael’s physical body stirred.
He sat motionless on the obsidian throne, his frame resting back against the stone, his dark, messy hair falling across his brow. Outside the tall gothic windows, the sky-shattered purple void hummed with a quiet, stable resonance.
Vanessa, standing below the dais with her catalyst staff, missed the exact moment of transition, her attention momentarily focused on the flickering diagnostic screens.
Above Raphael’s unconscious form, a series of magnificent, radiant golden system notifications materialized in the air, pulsing with a warm, living light that chased away every trace of the cold, artificial aura that had previously choked the chamber.

The future was now completely unknown. The scripted path of the system had been broken, and the dark, predetermined destiny of becoming a mindless vessel had been shattered, but as Raphael’s luminous silver eyes slowly fluttered open, burning with a clear, calm, and profoundly human brilliance, it was clear that whatever came next, he would face it not as a puppet of the system, but as a true Sovereign.
