I Summon Female Knights

Chapter 65: Shadow in the Overgrown Transit Hub

The transition through the secondary spatial node was instantaneous and dead silent.

Raphael stepped out of the shimmering dark-violet mirror and onto the slick, moss-covered concrete floor of a subterranean maintenance tunnel beneath Sector 3’s industrial rail yards. The ambient air here was cold, damp, and saturated with the heavy, sweet stench of rotting vegetation and crushed pine needles. Thick, emerald-green spores drifted lazily through the dim yellow light filtering down from rusted ventilation grates above.

Above him, the heavy iron girders of the rail yard groaned under intense structural stress. Through the ceiling, Raphael could hear the muffled, rhythmic thud of massive wooden limbs crashing against steel freight cars, accompanied by the distant chatter of automatic rifles and the crackle of burning diesel fuel.

Raphael pulled his hood lower over his eyes.

His Sovereign’s Veil remained pinned at absolute maximum density. His suffocating presence was completely sealed within his skin, leaving him utterly invisible to the Bureau’s regional mana-arrays and tactical drone sweeps hovering three miles overhead. To any external scanner, he did not exist- a quiet, shadow-like wanderer walking through the heart of an active anomaly zone.

He stepped over a thick, petrified root that had burst through the concrete floor like an iron cable and climbed the iron rungs of an emergency maintenance ladder leading to the surface.

With a quiet, effortless flex of his left hand, he pushed open the heavy steel access hatch and slipped out into the fog-shrouded freight yard.

The rain-slicked rail yard had been completely overrun by the B-Rank rift.

Where rows of iron tracks, diesel locomotives, and towering cargo cranes once stood, a twisted, prehistoric forest of petrified ironwood trees had erupted through the asphalt. The roots were as thick as tree trunks, weaving through wrecked freight cars and crushing steel shipping containers like dried leaves. A thick, dark-green spore fog hung over the ground, reducing visibility to less than thirty yards.

A hundred paces to his left, a squad of six B-Tier hunters from The Vanguard Coalition was engaged in a desperate, chaotic skirmish.

Clad in bright blue-and-white power armor, the mercenaries were firing heavy incendiary rifles at three seven-foot-tall Ironwood Treants. The constructs were terrifying amalgamations of petrified, stone-like dark bark, their hollow wooden chests glowing with sickly green vegetative mana, their four legs rooted deep into the cracked pavement.

"Keep thermal pressure on them! Don’t let their roots anchor!" the Vanguard squad leader roared, sweeping his heavy flamethrower across the nearest treant’s chest.

A torrent of bright orange fire engulfed the creature, but the petrified bark did not burn. Instead, the hyper-dense ironwood absorbed the thermal heat, the green light in its chest flashing brighter as the outer grain hardened into a polished, black-iron luster.

The Ironwood Treant let out a low, creaking roar that sounded like grinding timber. It raised its massive, club-like right arm, woven from interwoven petrified vines, and brought it down with terrifying kinetic force.

CRASH!

The heavy blow slammed into the Vanguard leader’s thermal shield, shattering the blue energy barrier instantly and throwing the armored hunter thirty feet across the rail yard into the side of a rusted freight car.

"Boss is down! Fall back! Fall back to the main bridge!" another hunter screamed over the squad comms, panicking as the remaining two treants advanced, their spear-like branch fingers clicking together in a horrific, wood-on-wood rhythm.

Raphael stood fifty yards away in the deep shadow cast by an overturned cargo crane, watching the retreat with cold, unblinking silver eyes.

His heightened neural perception dissected the battle in a fraction of a second. The Vanguard hunters were treating the ironwood constructs like standard organic monsters, trying to burn or melt them with thermal rounds. They failed to realize that petrified ironwood was a kinetic-type construct... the more heat and pressure applied to its exterior, the denser its wood fibers became.

"Waste of ammo," Raphael muttered softly, his deep baritone swallowed by the fog.

He turned his back on the fleeing Vanguard squad, having no interest in saving corporate mercenaries who fought for publicity contracts and corporate bounties. Instead, his silver eyes locked onto the central cluster of the overgrown rail yard, where the density of the rift was highest.

Raphael melted into the spore-laden fog, moving like a phantom between the petrified trunks and shattered shipping containers. His long, effortless strides carried him deeper into the heart of the quarantine zone without making a single sound on the wet asphalt.

Two blocks from the main rail hub, Raphael found what he was looking for. It was a secondary rift spire protruding from the ground like a fifteen-foot splinter of solid dark amber.

The spire burned with a dense, silvery-green light, radiating hyper-compressed vegetative mana into the surrounding air. Surrounding the base of the spire were four Bark-Stalkers, four-legged, wolf-like constructs made of twisted, thorn-spiked ironwood roots, their eyes glowing with sickly green mana as they guarded the rift’s core.

[HIGH-GRADE RESOURCE DETECTED: IRONWOOD HEARTWOOD SPIRE]

- Material Classification: B-Rank Refined Sap Matrix

- Yield: 800 Units Petrified Ironwood / 1 B-Tier Heartwood Core

- Guards: 4x Bark-Stalkers (B-Tier Constructs)

---

The four Bark-Stalkers suddenly snapped their thorn-covered heads toward the edge of the fog. Even with Raphael’s Sovereign’s Veil compressing his mana signature to zero, their sensory root-tendrils picked up the subtle displacement of the air caused by his presence.

They let out harsh, wooden hisses, their legs digging into the asphalt as they lunged forward simultaneously, their thorned jaws snapping open to crush his throat.

Raphael didn’t step back, but reached back with both hands, his gauntleted fingers wrapping comfortably around the grips of the Vanguard of the Eclipse set.

SHRRRR-KLINK!

The matte-black four-foot longsword and curved parrying dagger cleared their dual scabbards in a razor-sharp, whisper-quiet chime.

Raphael channeled a precise, hyper-compressed line of kinetic force straight into the adamantine edges of his blades and executed Tier 4: Spatial-Split Flurry.

ZIP-ZIP-BOOM!

Three razor-thin, silvery-violet spatial cuts cleaved through the spore fog in a flawless, overlapping triangle.

The spatial cuts ignored the petrified density of the Bark-Stalkers’ thorned hides entirely. The spatial blades passed cleanly through their wooden necks, chests, and root-limbs before the beasts could even complete the arc of their leap.

THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD.

The four B-Tier constructs collapsed onto the rain-slicked asphalt in twelve cleanly sliced pieces, their glowing green vegetative cores severed down the middle. The petrified wood dried up and crumbled into grey ash instantly as their animating mana vanished.

Raphael stepped up to the glowing fifteen-foot Heartwood Spire. He laid his left gauntlet against the cool, smooth amber surface, opening his spatial storage inventory with a calm thought.

ZIP.

The massive fifteen-foot spire vanished from the rail yard, stored safely alongside the treasury assets inside The Iron Spire.

[RESOURCE HARVESTED!]

- Acquired: B-Rank Ironwood Heartwood Spire

- System Notice: Fortress Defense Matrix reinforced. Physical stone density +10%

---

Raphael smoothly resheathed his blades, the matte-black adamantine repelling the green sap completely.

Before he could turn back toward the outer perimeter, a massive, grinding thud echoed from the main transit plaza three blocks ahead. The ground shuddered violently, throwing a cloud of dust and shredded leaves into the air.

Through the dense spore fog, Raphael’s enhanced hearing picked up the crisp, disciplined voice of Officer Elena broadcasting over a tactical comms channel nearby:

"Recon Team 4, fall back to the overpass! The central core construct has breached the transit gate! Our rifles aren’t piercing its chest armor...!"

Raphael pulled his deep hood tighter over his face, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips beneath the shadows.

"Looks like the main event has arrived," Raphael murmured, stepping forward into the fog.
