I Summon Female Knights

Chapter 60: The Price of Greed

The heavy steel security door grunted shut behind Raphael, sealing the muffled noise, thick smoke, and chaotic neon glare of The Sinking Coin inside the subterranean bunker.

Outside, the cold night air of Sector 9 was thick with the stench of wet asphalt, rusted iron, and stale exhaust. Rain continued to fall in a steady, rhythmic hiss, splashing against the crumbling brick walls of the narrow stairwell.

Raphael pulled his deep hood slightly lower over his eyes. His long, effortless strides carried him up the concrete steps and into the narrow, dark alleyway tucked between the two collapsed chemical processing plants.

He walked with a calm, measured pace, the wet pavement swallowing the sound of his boots. Deep within his chest, his newly acquired passive skill, Aegis of the Unyielding Sovereign, kept his mind in a state of absolute, icy tranquility. His enhanced spatial perception mapped every corner of the narrow passage with razor-sharp clarity.

Fifty yards behind him, four sets of heavy combat boots splashed through the rainwater in quiet, synchronized pursuit.

Raphael turned sharp left, deliberately stepping into a dead-end maintenance alley flanked by towering, windowless concrete walls. A rusted iron fire escape hung thirty feet overhead, and a pair of overflowing waste dumpsters blocked the far exit. He wouldn’t have done this some weeks ago. But now...

He stopped in the middle of the dark alley, standing beneath the faint, flickering yellow glow of a buzzing streetlamp. He waited, his hands resting naturally at his sides near the hem of his dark void-silk coat.

Within seconds, the four operatives of the Iron-Viper Syndicate rounded the corner, sealing off the only entrance to the alley.

Their leader, the scarred, broad-shouldered enforcer with the glowing red ocular implant, stepped to the front. He drew a massive, double-edged battle axe from his back harness, the heavy steel humming with a low-frequency, electric aura. The three men behind him unsheathed heavy, serrated combat machetes, their faces hardened by years of underworld bloodshed.

"End of the line, tall guy," the scar-faced leader growled, his voice rasping through a tactical voice synthesizer. His red ocular implant zoomed in on Raphael’s coat, scanning for the credit chips and spatial pockets.

"Marcus thought he was quiet, but my ocular visor picked up the spectral frequency on those gems. You’ve got at least four hundred million in bearer chips in those pockets, plus a spatial storage ring loaded with unrefined high-tier dross."

Raphael slowly turned around to face them, his luminous silver eyes glowing faintly from beneath the shadow of his dark hood.

"You followed me for four hundred million credits," Raphael said softly, his voice cutting through the patter of the rain with terrifying composure.

"We’re taking the chips, your coat, and whatever else you’re hiding in that ring," one of the syndicate thugs sneered, taking a step forward while twirling his serrated blade. "Drop to your knees and hand it over, or we chop you into piece-meal dross for the sewer rats."

"A simple transaction," Raphael mused quietly, a cold, faint smile touching his lips. "You saw wealth, but you failed to assess the owner."

"Kill him!" the scar-faced leader snapped, raising his glowing battle axe. "Don’t let him trigger a defensive talisman!"

The three syndicate thugs lunged forward simultaneously, their boots kicking up sheets of dirty rainwater as they surged down the narrow alley. They moved with the trained coordination of veteran B-tier rogue hunters, closing the twenty-foot gap in less than a second, their serrated blades aiming for his neck, chest, and thighs.

Raphael’s expression didn’t change. To him, their movements were clumsy, predictable, and laughably slow. He reached back with both hands, his fingers clad in the gauntlets.

SHRRRRR-KLINK!

The four-foot matte-black longsword and curved parrying dagger cleared their dual scabbards in a razor-sharp, whisper-quiet chime that sliced through the sound of the rain.

Raphael didn’t bother using his full Sovereign’s Veil, as doing so might leak a spatial signature to Bureau satellites. Instead, he channeled a tiny, hyper-compressed line of physical kinetic force straight into the dark adamantine edges and executed Tier 4: Spatial-Split Flurry.

ZIP-BOOM!

A single physical swing of his dual blades manifested three distinct, overlapping silvery-violet spatial arcs that cut through the dark alley simultaneously.

The lead thug didn’t even register that Raphael had moved. The three spatial cuts passed cleanly through his serrated blade, his armor, and his torso before he could finish his step. The two thugs flanking him were caught in the same spatial crossfire.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

The three syndicate operatives collapsed into the rainwater in six separate pieces, their weapons severed cleanly like warm wax. Their blood was instantly washed away by the falling rain, leaving behind only the faint, ozone scent of sliced space.

The scar-faced leader froze mid-stride, his heavy battle axe raised above his shoulder. His red ocular implant flared wildly, flashing endless red error warnings across his vision as it struggled to calculate the speed and spatial nature of the attack that had just erased his three best men in a fraction of a second.

Cold, paralyzing terror seized the leader’s chest. The cocky, predatory smirk on his face evaporated, replaced by a pale, sweat-slicked mask of horror.

"What... what kind of monster are you...?" the leader stammered, his knees shaking so violently that he nearly dropped his battle axe. "That speed... that isn’t B-tier... you’re an S-tier wanderer...!"

Raphael stepped forward, his dark boots clicking against the wet pavement. He didn’t even bother wiping the blades, as the matte-black adamantine surface of the Vanguard of the Eclipse set repelled blood and water completely.

He stopped two feet from the trembling syndicate leader, his towering frame casting a suffocating, mountain-like shadow over the man. Raphael reached out his left gauntleted hand, his obsidian knuckles clamping onto the leader’s throat with a vise-like grip that lifted the two-hundred-pound armored man three feet off the ground.

CLANG!

The heavy battle axe fell uselessly into the mud.

"You operate in Sector 9," Raphael spoke quietly, his silver eyes locking straight onto the man’s terrified pupils through his dark hood. "Tell me about the Bureau’s current movements. Captain Vale and Officer Elena."

The syndicate leader gasped for air, his hands frantically clawing at Raphael’s gauntlet, but the grip was like forged titanium.

"They... they locked down the Hiwo depot..." the leader choked out, his voice cracking with desperation. "Vale... Vale set up a high-security perimeter around Sector 9’s main transit hubs... but two hours ago... the main search force was recalled to headquarters...!"

Raphael’s silver eyes narrowed slightly. "Recalled? Why?"

"The... the Bureau’s national board thinks the Hiwo anomaly was a one-time spatial collapse caused by an unregistered wanderer..." the man wheezed, his face turning dark purple. "Vale was ordered to drop the large-scale sweep... they’re keeping only a small covert unit in Sector 9... led by Officer Elena... they’re... they’re watching black-market weapon dealers..."

Raphael absorbed the information instantly.

Vale had been forced to back down by his superiors to avoid public panic, leaving only Elena’s small, covert unit behind. The Bureau was completely blind to the existence of the Iron Spire, believing the rift was dead and the threat was gone.

"Thank you for the update," Raphael said calmly.

CRACK.

With a quick, effortless flex of his wrist, Raphael snapped the syndicate leader’s neck. He tossed the lifeless body onto the wet pavement beside the others.

Raphael stood in the quiet alley for a long moment, the steady rain washing over his dark void-silk coat. He resheathed his dual adamantine blades across his back with a crisp metallic snap, reached into his pocket, and confirmed the three black-and-gold bearer credit chips were secure.

Four hundred million credits in untraceable currency, critical intelligence on the Bureau’s scaled-back operations, and a clear path forward.

Raphael turned his back on the narrow alley and walked back toward the subterranean drainage tunnel where his hidden Waypoint Gate waited. It was time to return to his stronghold, refine his resources, and prepare for his next move.

As for killing those men... he felt nothing.
