Chapter 764: Chapter 459: He’s a Good Person, but His Aura Is Terrifying
"SHHH, SHHH, SHHH..."
Inside the quiet room, Liu Jialin’s colleague used her pen to meticulously record all of Zhu Daqi’s answers from the evening. The pen tip glided across the paper, making a faint scratching sound.
"TAP, TAP, TAP..."
Liu Jialin, who was leading the interrogation, rested her right hand on the table. Her slender index finger tapped lightly against the surface, the repetitive sound causing Zhu Daqi’s heart to beat faster and faster.
"Miss Investigator, do you have any other questions?" Zhu Daqi asked nervously, looking at Liu Jialin, who was staring at him in silence. "As long as it’s something I know, I’ll tell you everything, down to the last detail. I won’t dare hide a thing."
Liu Jialin stared at Zhu Daqi, her expression unreadable. After several minutes of silence, her lips parted. "That’s all for now," she said. "If anything else comes up, I’ll be back to question you again."
Hearing Liu Jialin say she had no more questions for the time being didn’t bring Zhu Daqi any relief. Instead, he asked nervously, "So, th-then... can I go home now?"
The words had barely left his mouth when both Liu Jialin and her colleague, who had been taking notes, rolled their eyes at him.
"After everything you’ve done, you think you can just go home?" Liu Jialin retorted.
"Er..." Zhu Daqi was at a loss for words. He knew he couldn’t go home, not after the things he’d done recently, especially with his connection to the deceased Chen Xiaoyan. He had only asked out of a desperate, fleeting hope.
"Get him processed in a moment," Liu Jialin said, turning to her colleague.
"Right." The rookie Investigator, Zhang Xiao, who had only recently joined, nodded. After Liu Jialin left, she jotted down the last few details, then stood up and addressed Zhu Daqi.
"All right, don’t look so down. As long as you continue to cooperate, the things you did will, at worst, land you in a cell for a little while before you’re out..."
"..." Zhu Daqi stood up in silence and followed the Investigator out of the room, heading toward the suspect holding area.
For the foreseeable future, he would be completely cut off from the outside world. It was anyone’s guess whether he would turn over a new leaf and start fresh after serving his time.
...
The night was hazy. Within the Superpower Administration Bureau compound, streetlights cast a dim, yellow glow, illuminating patches of the surrounding darkness.
Looking toward the office buildings, one could occasionally see Investigators emerging from brightly lit rooms and hurrying off to another.
After finishing her interrogation of Zhu Daqi, it was time for Liu Jialin’s shift to end.
She walked to the parking lot and got into her car, but she didn’t start the engine right away. Instead, she took her phone out of her pocket, opened her contacts, and found Lin Li’s number.
The interrogation with Zhu Daqi had laid out the sequence of events clearly. There was no longer any doubt that Lin Li was the key to solving the case.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Liu Jialin leaned against the backrest, her left fingers tapping gently on the steering wheel. She stared at the phone number displayed on the screen in her right hand and murmured to herself.
"If Lin Li was the one who did it, with his strength, eliminating all the victims in this case wouldn’t have been difficult..."
’Forget it. I won’t call him for now. I’ll call him after I’ve investigated the deaths of Chen Xiaoyan and Wang Hao, and the disappearance of Liu Menglong...’
After some thought, Liu Jialin put her phone away, started the car, and left the Superpower Administration Bureau, heading home.
...
The next morning, after the sun rose, the phone on the bedside table began to ring.
Lin Li, who had been sound asleep in bed, heard the phone and immediately opened his eyes.
It wasn’t a call. His phone’s alarm had just gone off.
He picked up the phone, turned off the alarm, and threw back the covers to get out of bed.
"SWISH..."
He walked to the window and pulled back the curtains, letting the brilliant golden sunlight flood into the dim room.
"Looks like the weather isn’t great today," Lin Li mumbled when he saw a few dark clouds on the horizon. He then turned, left the bedroom, and went to wash up.
In the residential community’s green space, two small stray cats were already awake. They sat on the grass, watching the early-rising humans jog back and forth along the path.
"Meow... Why don’t these humans go run in the park? It’s so noisy with them running around the community..." the Little Black Cat said to its companion, lifting a small paw to scratch its cheek.
"Meow... Did you forget?" said the Little White Cat. "The park closest to here is closed for major renovations for the next few days. That’s why they’re all exercising in the community..."
"Meow... Now that you mention it, I remember," said the Little Black Cat. Its companion’s reminder jogged its memory.
Yesterday afternoon, they had passed by a few of the older women from the neighborhood committee and overheard them talking about the park’s upcoming renovations.
The two small strays continued their idle chat, watching the humans run back and forth along the path. They both thought the humans were terribly slow—much slower than themselves.
Suddenly, an imperceptible glint of pale golden Spiritual Light flashed in the depths of the Little White Cat’s big, glossy black eyes. Its small ears twitched a few times, and it turned its head to look toward the entrance of Building Three in the distance.
