Chapter 699: Chapter 427: Objective Reality Can’t Be 100% Effective
"If it wasn’t a bite from a venomous, snake-like Mutant Beast, but from another poisonous kind, would this antidote still have the same effect?" Lin Li asked.
’For instance, when that enemy ambushed and scratched me in Dongwu City in the Spirit Realm yesterday, the poison on their claws probably wasn’t derived from snake venom.’
’If it really had been snake venom, getting scratched yesterday wouldn’t have just knocked me out.’
"If you were injured by another type of poisonous Mutant Beast, then you would need a different antidote."
The saleswoman moved the green antidote for snake venom aside, placed a blue one in front of Lin Li, and began her explanation.
"This antidote counteracts four symptoms of poisoning: stiffness, fatigue, deep sleep, and listlessness."
Lin Li pressed, "Is its success rate also ninety-nine percent?"
The saleswoman shook her head. "This one is from a batch produced the year before last. Its success rate is only ninety-seven percent."
"It’s only a two-percent difference. Ninety-seven percent is still pretty high," Lin Li said.
"Ninety-seven percent might sound high, but really think about it.
If you’re out in the wilds hunting Mutant Beasts, get poisoned by accident, and need an antidote that isn’t one hundred percent effective... you’ll be thinking very differently at that moment," the saleswoman said.
"That’s true! If you get poisoned by accident, when you’re using the antidote, anyone would be thinking, ’I wish this was one hundred percent effective!’" Lin Li said with a laugh.
"So, which antidote will you be buying? Or do you want both?" the saleswoman asked.
"I’ll take both. How much are they?"
"They’re the same price. Ten thousand each."
’That’s a lot more expensive than the healing ointment.’
’The healing ointment is three thousand a tube. At ten thousand a dose, the antidote is more than three times the price.’
The saleswoman explained, "The manufacturing process for the antidote is complex and the yield is low, so the price is a bit higher."
’He’d made twenty-six million from selling those pearls yesterday, so his account balance was now over thirty million. For a man of his newfound means, an antidote costing ten thousand a dose wasn’t unaffordable.’
"I’ll take ten of each, please."
"Huh?"
The saleswoman froze when she heard Lin Li say he wanted ten of each antidote.
"What’s wrong? Is there a limit on how many I can buy?" Lin Li asked, seeing her reaction. He thought there might be a purchase limit on the antidote.
"Oh, no. Although the manufacturing process is complex and the yield is low, it’s not to the point where we need to limit purchases," the saleswoman said, snapping out of her daze with a smile.
"Oh, good. Could you please bag them for me? I have other things to do and I’m in a bit of a hurry," Lin Li said.
"Of course. Just a moment, I’ll get them packed for you right away," the saleswoman said.
She then went to the antidote cabinet to retrieve the twenty doses Lin Li needed.
At the same time, she thought to herself, ’To make such a big sale this early in the morning... my luck’s not bad.’
A short while later, Lin Li paid the two hundred thousand and walked out of the pharmacy, carrying a paper bag containing the twenty doses of antidote.
The bright sunlight beat down on him, making him subconsciously raise a hand to his brow.
Brilliant golden sunbeams filtered through the gaps between his fingers, casting patterns on Lin Li’s face.
’Alright, time to head to the wilds. The temperature is a few degrees lower than usual today. It’s still hot, but a bit cooler. It should be easier to run into Mutant Beasts out there.’
With a thought, Lin Li stored the paper bag with the twenty doses of antidote in his Mysterious Small Island, then headed for his car.
VRMM...
After starting the car, Lin Li turned the wheel, spun the car around, and headed toward the North District Suburbs.
’Oh, right... I still haven’t given Su Yue the pastries Zhu Xinru gave me yesterday. It’s on the way. I’ll drop her portion off, and then I’ll go hunt Mutant Beasts in the wilds of the North District Suburbs.’
......
「Rongxi Primary School.」
In the faculty office, teachers who didn’t have a class sat at their workstations, busy with all sorts of things.
And with the Mid-Autumn Festival fast approaching, the teachers were even busier organizing student performances.
Compared to the teachers of core subjects like language, math, and English, Su Yue, being the music teacher, seemed far more relaxed.
She only had one class this morning, and it wasn’t for another hour. She was currently a bit bored, fiddling with her phone.
DING.
A message came in. Su Yue, who had been scrolling through her social media feed, opened it, read it quickly, sent a reply, and then stood up and walked out of the office.
「A moment later.」
Her long, smooth hair draped over her shoulders, Su Yue walked out from the school grounds. Dressed in a white blouse and a black pencil skirt, she moved with a graceful sway in her high heels.
’Where is he?’
After exiting the school, Su Yue first looked to her left. Not seeing the person she was looking for, she then looked to her right and spotted a familiar figure in the distance. He was standing under a roadside tree, his back against the trunk, looking down at his phone.
TAP, TAP, TAP...
Her well-proportioned legs strode forward methodically, her heels making a crisp sound on the pavement.
Lin Li leaned against the roadside tree as brilliant golden sunlight filtered through gaps in the leaves, casting shifting patches of light on his clothes.
Whenever a breeze rustled the branches, the spots of light on his clothes would dance along with them.
A faint, pleasant fragrance wafted toward him. Lin Li’s nose twitched—he was already very familiar with this scent. He immediately looked up.
Su Yue, with her fair skin and distinct curves, stood charmingly before him. Her teacher’s uniform gave her an elegant air, and she watched him with a smile playing on her lips.
A sudden gust of wind had tousled her dark, lovely hair, and she was now raising a slender arm to tuck a loose strand behind her ear.
"Here," Lin Li said, holding out the bag of pastries to Su Yue.
"Well, well... You actually came all the way to the school to bring me pastries during work hours. What a rare sight!"
Su Yue’s pretty face bloomed into a radiant smile. She clicked her tongue in amusement as she took the bag from Lin Li and peeked inside.
"I was on my way somewhere and just dropped by," Lin Li explained.
"These pastries are quite exquisite," Su Yue said, taking one from the bag. She parted her red lips and took a small bite with her neat, pearly-white teeth.
"So? It’s good, right?" Lin Li asked as Su Yue sampled the pastry.
"Mhm, it’s delicious. Which pastry shop did you get these from?" Su Yue asked casually.
Lin Li heard her question. ’Just as I predicted,’ he thought. ’She likes the pastries from Zhu Xinru and wants to know where they’re from.’
Of course, Lin Li couldn’t tell her the truth about their origin.
But since he had anticipated this, he wasn’t caught off guard.
"A woman on my neighborhood’s residential committee gave them to me. She said a friend gave them to her..."
"Oh." Having only asked out of curiosity, Su Yue accepted Lin Li’s explanation and didn’t press the matter further.
"Well, I’ve delivered them, so I’ll get going. You should head back to your office," Lin Li said.
"I don’t have any classes this afternoon. Once my morning class is done, I can clock out and go home."
"I thought you had to stay at school even if you don’t have class. How can you clock out and go home?"
"That was the old policy. Starting this semester, after the summer break, our school no longer requires teachers to stay on campus if they don’t have a class."
"Oh, I see! That’s pretty nice..." Lin Li nodded. At that moment, Su Yue smiled at him and said, "Let’s go get some bubble tea together after I get off work!"
"..." Lin Li froze for a second. His plan had been to drop off the pastries for Su Yue, then head to the wilds in the North District Suburbs to hunt Mutant Beasts until evening.
"What are you spacing out for?" Su Yue asked, seeing Lin Li’s dazed expression.
"It’s nothing. This afternoon..." Lin Li started to say he had plans and couldn’t go get bubble tea with her, but before he could get the words out, he was interrupted by his phone suddenly ringing.
