Chapter 589: Chapter 374: This World Is So Barren, I Really Regret Coming Here
"Great! I’ll go to the market to buy the ingredients we need and come to your place around noon. Oh, right... could you teach me how to make fish with pickled mustard greens, too? I’ll buy two grass carp at the market tomorrow."
Wrapped in a light blue bath towel, Su Yue lay on her stomach on the sofa, kicking her legs restlessly. After listening to Lin Li’s voice message, she smiled and sent another one back.
"Sure! Actually, you don’t need to buy two grass carp. Just get one big one, and we can make two dishes out of it."
If his appetite hadn’t soared recently from eating the Magical Little Fruit, Lin Li would have definitely taken Su Yue’s suggestion and just bought one large grass carp.
"One won’t be enough!"
"Oh, really? Alright then, buy two tomorrow."
"By the way, after I buy the fish, should I ask the vendor to clean it? And have him cut it all into fillets?"
"You can! When the vendor is slicing it, just tell him not to cut the fillets too thin," Su Yue reminded him.
"Okay, got it. I’ll see how the fishmonger cuts them first. If they’re too thin, I’ll ask him to cut them thicker," replied Lin Li, who, like Su Yue, preferred thicker fillets.
The two of them chatted for a little while longer before ending the conversation because Su Yue needed to go blow-dry her hair.
Putting his phone aside, Lin Li picked up the half-chilled watermelon again and started digging in with a spoon, feasting with gusto.
While Lin Li was eating watermelon and watching the news, a black sedan was parked on the street outside the Ping’an Garden District.
In the driver’s seat, Zhu Daqi, who had flashy blond hair and an earring, stared at the little red dot on an app on his phone and muttered to himself.
’That guy hasn’t left the house all day. How can he be such a homebody?’
The "guy" Zhu Daqi was talking about was, of course, his target, Lin Li.
He had thought that planting a tracker on the target’s van would be an efficient way to monitor his movements.
But after he’d planted the tracker that morning, the target hadn’t left the house all day. He had no idea what the man was doing, cooped up inside.
RING RING RING...
A call came in. The caller ID showed the name: Liu Menglong.
Seeing the call was from his boss, Zhu Daqi quickly answered.
"Hello."
"Any movement from the target today?" Liu Menglong asked as soon as the call connected. He was sitting under a large tree in his yard, holding a bottle of beer.
"Boss, the target stayed home all day," Zhu Daqi reported.
"Oh, is that so? Alright, keep watching him. If he makes any of the moves I told you about, call me immediately," said Liu Menglong.
"Yes, sir."
After hanging up, Zhu Daqi looked toward Building Three of the Ping’an Garden District, his gaze fixed on the apartment where Lin Li lived.
Light shone from the windows. He imagined his target, leisurely sitting on the living room sofa, enjoying the air conditioning while eating chilled watermelon and watching TV.
"It’s getting late. I’ll call it a day," Zhu Daqi said to himself. "I’ll go home and rest, then come back to watch this guy tomorrow." He started the car, made a U-turn, and headed for home.
After Zhu Daqi drove away, a figure emerged from the shadows of a distant tree by the roadside.
With a cigarette dangling from his lips, Li Ying watched Zhu Daqi’s car disappear around a distant corner. Then, his gaze shifted to the Ping’an Garden District.
Just as Zhu Daqi had, he looked toward the apartment where Lin Li lived.
’So that guy Lin Li hasn’t left the house all day. Normally, an Exotic Beast Hunter who isn’t injured would be itching to get out to the suburbs and hunt Mutant Beasts. This guy is certainly different.’
Muttering to himself, Li Ying flicked his half-finished cigarette to the ground, then turned and walked away.
...
Deep in the night, in the wilderness outside the East District, a bright full moon hung high in the sky, surrounded by twinkling stars that seemed to stand in attendance.
Over twenty kilometers from the safe zone, there lay a swamp the size of several football fields.
For a long time, this muddy swamp had been home to a pack of Crocodile Beasts.
But today, a colossal Mutant Beast had arrived. It was over twenty meters long, covered in purple scales, and had a single, sharp red horn protruding from the top of its head.
It had driven out all the Crocodile Beasts and claimed the swamp for itself.
SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH...
The massive Red-Horned Purple-Scaled Lizard took a mud bath, then lay down in the swamp. It raised its head to gaze at the moon—a full size smaller than the one in its home world—and let out a despondent roar.
ROAR...
Hearing the roar, the other Mutant Beasts in the area trembled in fear before scattering, fleeing far away from the swamp.
"ROAR... The Spiritual Energy in this world is so low. It’s barren... I want to go home... Sigh, how in the world am I supposed to get back?"
The Red-Horned Purple-Scaled Lizard roared, thrashing its massive tail against the swamp water.
If it had the choice, it would never have entered that spatial rift and come to this barren world.
...
The next day. In a quiet room, the golden rays of the rising sun spilled onto the curtains.
Sunlight squeezed through the gap in the curtains, casting the room in a hazy glow, as if draping it in a golden veil.
On the soft, comfortable bed, a figure lay on her side. Her fair, slender arms were folded together, and a thin silk quilt was all that covered her, doing little to hide her well-defined curves.
Mmm~
Her eyelashes fluttered. With a soft murmur, Su Yue slowly opened her eyes.
Still groggy from sleep, Su Yue waited half a minute before reaching for the phone on her nightstand to check the time.
’It’s still early. I’ll sleep a little longer.’
She placed her phone back on the nightstand, pulled the silk quilt over her head, and burrowed back under the covers.
A little over an hour later, after dozing off again, a sleepy-eyed Su Yue emerged from her bedroom, dressed in an icy-silk nightgown.
SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH...
After washing up in the bathroom, Su Yue ate breakfast, changed her clothes, and headed out.
...
A white electric scooter turned the corner and headed toward a photo studio down the street.
Su Yue reached her destination, parked the scooter in a designated spot, took off her helmet, stowed it, and locked the vehicle.
Men and women alike among the passersby on the street found their gazes immediately drawn to Su Yue the moment they saw her.
Today, Su Yue wore a white blouse and beige capri pants with a pair of low-heeled shoes, revealing her fair, slender, and perfectly straight calves.
Her smooth, jet-black hair fell casually over her shoulders, swaying gently as she walked. This, combined with a face so stunning it needed no makeup and a figure with breathtaking curves, gave her an utterly captivating aura.
The other young women passing by were reduced to mere background props. They couldn’t help but quicken their pace, subconsciously wanting to put some distance between themselves and this stunning woman.
"Teacher Su, you’re here!" the photo studio’s proprietress greeted with a smile as the beautiful Su Yue walked in.
Su Yue smiled and nodded. "Good morning, ma’am!"
"Teacher Su, the photos you asked me to develop are ready. Take a look." The proprietress took two prepared photo albums from a cabinet, placed them on the counter, and gestured for Su Yue to come have a look.
Su Yue and Lin Li had taken a lot of pictures on their previous trip to Qiong City. After returning, she had found some time to ask the studio’s proprietress to print the photos she’d taken with her phone.
The proprietress had finished printing them all yesterday, so Su Yue came to pick them up this morning after breakfast.
