I Siphon the Dead to Become the Strongest
Chapter 42: A Quality Study in Violence
The moment she left the ground, two Fulminar Wolves leaped from opposite sides of the brush. They hit Ethan simultaneously, their fangs sinking deep into the joints of his gauntlets. Ethan grit his teeth, his boots sliding back in the dirt as he struggled to keep his balance, his arms being yanked violently in two different directions.
"Oh, for the love of—! Get! Off! Me!" he roared.
Then, a third wolf emerged. It didn't lunge. It didn't howl. It stepped out of the shadows with a slow, predatory deliberation. It wasn't looking at Ethan's head. It wasn't looking at his throat. Its glowing yellow eyes were locked onto a very specific, very vital target lower down.
The wolf let out a low, rumbling growl, its gaze fixed squarely on Ethan's crotch.
Ethan froze. His voice jumped an octave. "Oh no. No, no, no! You don't! Absolutely NOT!" He scrambled backward, trying to shift his weight while still being chewed on by the two wolves on his arms. "Get your eyes off the merchandise, you four-legged freak! That is a NO-FLY ZONE! I am NOT letting a dog be the one to end my bloodline!"
The wolf coiled its muscles, preparing to spring for the "forbidden fruit."
THWACK!
A sharp, metallic whistle sliced through the air. A violet-tipped arrow slammed directly into the wolf's forehead with such force that it didn't just kill the beast—it pinned its skull firmly to a nearby tree trunk. The wolf's legs twitched once, then went still.
In the distance, perched high in the brush, was Jay. He didn't wave. He didn't smile. He just let out a short, dismissive "Hmph."
Ethan exhaled a breath he didn't know he was holding. "My man! Jay, you are officially my favorite person in this entire godforsaken forest!"
Suddenly, sparks began to dance along the surfaces of Ethan's gauntlets—bright, erratic arcs of blue electricity that hissed and popped. He didn't pull away from the two wolves still clinging to his arms; instead, he pushed the energy into them.
KRA-KOOOOM!
A violent surge of lightning exploded outward from his frame. It wasn't a shock; it was a total systemic overload. The wolves were instantaneously deep-fried from the inside out, their fur charring in a flash of blinding white light before they collapsed into smoking heaps of carbon.
Above them, Germaine had reached the apex of her flight and was now plummeting back toward the earth. As she fell, she saw a fresh wave of Fulminar Wolves charging in a straight line, their eyes locked on the chaos below.
Pathetic, she thought, her expression ice-cold.
As she descended, Germaine extended her fingers, grazing the surface of the ground the moment she landed. Using her downward momentum, she spun her body into a violent, whirling vortex.
"Sand Gale!"
A shockwave of golden grit erupted from her position. Five massive, crescent-shaped blades of compressed sand tore through the earth, screaming forward in a straight line. They hit the charging wolves like a series of invisible guillotines.
SLASH! EXPLODE!
The wolves were sliced clean through, then launched upward and backward by the concussive force of the skill. They were flung in different directions, slamming into the surrounding trees with wet thuds, leaving a trail of shredded fur and dust in their wake.
As the dust settled, Germaine stood up slowly, her breathing steady, her eyes scanning the perimeter for the next threat.
Ethan, meanwhile, was leaning over, checking his pants for any tears. "Phew. Close one. I almost became a 'no-wolf' zone."
The dust from the Sand Gale had barely settled when the eerie silence returned, but it was a deceptive peace. The forest was breathing again, and it sounded hungry.
Germaine didn't waste a second. She closed the distance to Ethan in a blur of motion, her long sword held in a low, ready guard. Her eyes were locked on the treeline, her voice cold and clinical.
"They're recovering," she stated. "Do you actually have a plan, or are we just improvising our way into a coffin?"
Ethan looked at her, his visor tilting in genuine offense. "Oh, I see how it is! I'm the only one doing the heavy lifting—mentally and physically—around here! Those beasts almost ended my entire genetic legacy, Germaine! My bloodline was five seconds away from becoming a cautionary tale about the dangers of canine attraction!"
Germaine didn't even blink. "I am aware of your near-castration. That is precisely why I am asking if you have a strategy, because we have company."
As if punctuating her sentence, a chorus of snarls erupted from the brush. Seven Fulminar Wolves, recovered from the initial shock and driven by a collective, predatory rage, charged in a tight, coordinated wedge. They weren't sniffing this time; they were sprinting at full tilt, a wave of silver fur and bared fangs heading straight for them.
"Don't sweat it," Ethan said, his tone shifting. "I got this."
He stepped forward, his posture changing. He took a deep, centering inhale that seemed to draw the very air out of the clearing. Slowly, he raised his left hand high above his head, fingers spread wide in a visceral, claw-like position.
For a heartbeat, there was a strange tension in the atmosphere, as if the gravity of the world had suddenly decided to focus all its attention on one single point.
Then, Ethan slammed his hand downward.
K-BOOM!
It wasn't an explosion of fire or light, but an explosion of weight. An invisible, colossal force descended from the sky like the foot of an unseen titan. The seven wolves didn't even have time to howl; they were instantly hammered into the dirt.
The sound was deafening—a series of rhythmic, bone-shattering cracks as the ground beneath them splintered and cratered. The wolves were blasted downward with such violent pressure that they didn't just hit the floor; they bounced. The force was so immense that they were momentarily pinned against the earth and then rebounded slightly, suspended in a state of helpless, vibrating shock, their limbs splayed and their spines locked by the crushing atmospheric weight.
Germaine froze, her sword shaking slightly in her grip. "What... what was that?!"
"Unique Ability: Heavy Pressure," Ethan replied, his voice returning to its usual lazy drawl, though he was still holding the pose. "Basically, I just told the air that it's time to get a job and start pushing things down. Now go!" he barked, his arm still strained. "Slash them while they're stuck in the 'gravity blender'!"
Germaine didn't need to be told twice. She reacted with the precision of a surgical strike. She leaped, her body becoming a silver arc in the air.
SHING! SHING! SHING!
In one fluid, continuous motion, she carved through the suspended wolves. Her blade sang as it passed through fur and bone, a whirlwind of steel that didn't miss a single mark. By the time she landed in a low crouch, the five lead wolves had already been diced into neat segments, their forms disintegrating into pixels before they even hit the ground for the second time.
Ethan let out a long, loud exhale and dropped his arm, the crushing pressure vanishing instantly.
"Man," he groaned, stretching his shoulder. "Doing things that actually look cool is exhausting. I can feel my nap-drive plummeting."
The momentary victory was short-lived. Just as Ethan was complaining about his lack of sleep, the brush behind Germaine exploded. A lone Fulminar Wolf, a survivor of the previous onslaught, launched itself in a desperate, blind ambush aimed right for her unsuspecting back.
THWIP.
Before Germaine could even register the shift in the wind, a violet-tipped arrow hissed through the air, burying itself deep into the wolf's eye socket. The creature let out a strangled yelp, staggering backward, its vision clouded by toxin and steel. It didn't get a second step; a hidden loop of high-tensile rope, cleverly concealed in the leaf litter, snapped shut around its hind leg.
With a sudden, violent jerk, the rope pulled taut. A hidden mechanism in the canopy above triggered, releasing a heavy, sharpened wooden stake that plummeted with the force of a falling spear. The wolf was yanked upward and downward simultaneously, the stake impaling it through the chest and pinning it to the forest floor in one brutal, instantaneous motion.
"Seriously?" Ethan groaned, though he didn't have time to admire the craftsmanship.
In front of him, two wolves had already closed the gap, their claws becoming a blurring whirlwind of silver streaks. Ethan braced himself, his gauntlets ringing with a series of metallic CLANG-CLANG-CLANG as he blocked a relentless chain of left-right swipes. The force of the blows pushed him back, the metal of his armor screeching against the wolves' talons.
Suddenly, a third wolf leaped from a high branch, hitting Ethan with the force of a runaway freight train.
"OOF!"
Ethan was knocked flat on his back, skidding through the dirt and pine needles. He scrambled, his hands flying up to grab the wolf's upper and lower jaws just inches from his visor. He pushed the snarling beast away, his boots digging into the mud to keep from being pinned.
"Listen, you overgrown carpet!" Ethan yelled, his voice straining as he wrestled with the wolf's maw. "I know I'm a snack, but have you seen my nutritional value? I'm 90% sarcasm and 10% anxiety! You're going to have a massive stomach ache for a week! Do you really want to risk your digestive health for a guy in a tin suit?"
The wolf let out a muffled snarl, its muffled growls vibrating through Ethan's gloves.
"Oh, you want to argue? Let's argue!"
With a sudden, explosive grunt, Ethan shifted his weight and shoved the wolf's head aside. In the same motion, he retracted his left fist and began a relentless, rhythmic pummeling.
BAM! POW! THWACK!
Each punch landed with a heavy, metallic thud, driving the wolf’s head deeper into the dirt. Ethan wasn't using a skill; he was just venting his frustration.
"This! Is! For! The! Bloodline!"
POW! WHACK! BAM!
K-BOOM!
The final punch landed squarely on the wolf's snout with enough force to create a small crater. The beast's eyes rolled back in its head, and it went limp, instantly knocked unconscious by the sheer absurdity of the violence.
...
A few yards away, Germaine was fighting her own war. She wasn't standing her ground; she was a ghost in the greenery. As the pack unleashed torrents of superheated plasma breath, she dove into the thickets, using the massive trunks of the old-growth trees as shields. The heat scorched the air, turning leaves to ash in seconds, but she was too fast.
She leaped from root to branch, her movements fluid and feline. She used the canopy to break the wolves' line of sight, pivoting and swinging through the branches to avoid being surrounded. Every time a wolf tried to cut off her escape, she was already ten feet above them, a cold, silver shadow waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
She landed softly beside the panting Ethan, her sword clean and her expression as frigid as ever.
"Are you done playing with your food?" she asked, glancing at the unconscious wolf.
Ethan lay flat on his back, staring up at the canopy. "I'm not playing. I'm... conducting a qualitative study on wolf nasal cartilage. It's very academic."

Wrote this chapter while contemplating the 'philosophy of laziness.' I almost didn't post it because the effort was simply too much, but then I remembered I like you guys. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to find a very large pillow for a very long nap. 💤✨
