Great Thunderclap Monastery.
This was the gathering place where the Buddhist Sect discussed important matters, where Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Arhats assembled.
Inside the hall.
At the highest seat sat a Buddha upon a lotus platform. His body towered ten thousand zhang high, his head touching the heavens, while each petal of the lotus platform beneath him resembled an island.
Behind him slowly revolved a golden wheel of merit, radiating golden brilliance in all directions. Within the wheel glittered countless stars, as though an entire universe rested within his palm.
This Buddha bore the title Datongguang Buddha. He was one of the five Buddhas of the Buddhist Sect, ruler of the Western Paradise, with cultivation so profound that none could fathom its depths.
On both sides beneath him sat the various Bodhisattvas and Arhats in orderly rows.
The Bodhisattvas ranged from several thousand zhang tall, while the Arhats stood anywhere from several hundred to a thousand zhang in height.
Though far less towering than the Buddha, they still possessed solemn appearances and overwhelming dignity.
At this moment, however, the atmosphere within the hall was grave.
An Arhat knelt in the center of the hall. His appearance was withered, his eyes vacant, and his mouth continuously muttered to itself.
This Arhat’s Buddhist title was Huiming. He was precisely the Arhat whom the Buddhist Sect had dispatched decades ago to the Mortal Realm South Abyss No. 73 to spread Buddhist teachings and serve as the Buddha of that mortal realm.
Back then, the faith of that mortal realm had been monopolized by a mysterious great power. The Buddhist Sect had wished to claim a share of the faith, and thus sent Huiming to negotiate, intending to request that the great power show some accommodation so both sides could develop their respective faiths instead of acting so absolutely.
In the end, not only did Huiming fail to complete the mission, he was directly thrown back out of that mortal realm.
When news of this returned to the Buddhist Sect, the entire sect was shaken.
A dignified Arhat had been tossed from a mortal realm back into the Immortal Realm. The humiliation struck not merely Huiming’s face, but the face of the entire Buddhist Sect.
Even worse, after returning, Huiming fell into inner demon deviation.
Several decades had passed, and he still had not awakened.
He continuously repeated a single phrase:
“Great unity beneath heaven, equality among all beings… no nobility, no lowliness, no Buddha, no demon… great unity beneath heaven, equality among all beings…”
Again and again, only those few lines.
At this moment, a Bodhisattva spoke:
“My Buddha, the matter concerning Huiming cannot be delayed any longer.”
“No matter which great power stands behind that mortal realm, such complete disregard for the dignity of our Buddhist Sect, injuring our Buddhist disciple and tarnishing our sect’s reputation—if this is not punished, how will the myriad worlds view our Buddhist Sect in the future?”
The speaker was named Guangmuzun Bodhisattva. He possessed a square face and large ears, though sharp severity lingered between his brows.
Within the Buddhist Sect, the Bodhisattva fruit position represented an exceedingly lofty realm, far surpassing ordinary Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas.
This realm corresponded to the Immortal King Realm of the Immortal Dao, and throughout all of Spirit Mountain, only a handful possessed such attainment.
The cultivation system of the Buddhist Sect formed an independent path, faintly corresponding to the realms of the Immortal Dao:
Those who initially upheld discipline and awakened to their true nature were known as Enlightened Heart Monks, comparable to Human Immortals.
Those who diligently cultivated and attained lesser fruition were known as Vajra Monks, similar to Earth Immortals.
Those who severed delusion, attained truth, and escaped reincarnation became Arhats, corresponding to Heavenly Immortals.
Above Arhats were Pratyekabuddhas, those who independently comprehended the Great Dao, standing between the True Immortal Realm and the Mysterious Immortal Realm.
Above Pratyekabuddhas were Bodhisattvas, corresponding to Immortal Kings.
Bodhisattvas cultivated through the Ten Grounds. Only after reaching perfection could they attain the fruit position of Buddha, comparable to Immortal Emperors.
At this moment, after Guangmuzun Bodhisattva finished speaking, several Arhats rose in succession to voice agreement.
“What Bodhisattva Guangmu says is absolutely correct,” declared one golden-bodied Arhat.
“That mortal realm has severed all forms of faith and reveres only a single Great Unity Venerable. Such tyranny goes too far.”
“Across the myriad worlds and mortal realms, the great powers of the Immortal Realm have long maintained tacit understanding, allowing faiths to develop independently without mutual interference.”
“Such monopolistic behavior and exclusion of dissenters are utterly unheard of.”
Another Arhat added:
“In truth, the faith of a mere mortal realm is nothing more than a drop in the ocean to our Buddhist Sect.”
“But the other party caused Senior Brother Huiming to fall into inner demon deviation. This is an open provocation.”
“If we do not punish this severely, then all great powers may imitate this behavior in the future. How then will our Buddhist Sect continue saving all living beings?”
For a time, the entire hall erupted into noise.
Some shouted for punishment, while others remained silent.
Several compassionate Bodhisattvas attempted to speak fair words on behalf of that mortal realm, only to be drowned beneath even fiercer condemnation.
Datongguang Buddha sat silently upon his lotus platform, his brows slightly furrowed.
As he gazed at the indignant Bodhisattvas and Arhats, he sighed inwardly.
Others did not understand, but he saw clearly.
Huiming’s inner demon deviation had not been caused by external methods. Rather, obsession had arisen within his own heart, causing his mind to lose control and generate inner demons naturally.
Datongguang Buddha also knew that the Bodhisattvas and Arhats clamoring for severe punishment were not truly blinded by anger.
Rather, they had been contaminated by the tribulation qi of heaven and earth.
The great tribulation of heaven and earth was approaching.
That invisible tribulation qi, like mist and miasma, had already seeped throughout the Immortal Realm and begun affecting the minds of numerous great powers.
It made them irritable, paranoid, combative, and stripped away the calmness and rationality they once possessed.
Matters that once could have been peacefully discussed through Dao discourse now provoked furious table-slamming disputes.
Bodhisattvas who once cherished compassion now spoke only of severe punishment, establishing authority, and preserving the prestige of the Buddhist Sect.
Datongguang Buddha swept his gaze across the hall. On every familiar face lingered traces of viciousness rarely seen before.
He knew this was the work of tribulation.
Not something mortal power could obstruct.
He also knew that no matter what conclusion emerged from today’s debate, it would merely be a tiny ripple before the arrival of the great tribulation of heaven and earth.
After remaining silent for a long while, Datongguang Buddha finally spoke:
“This matter shall be discussed later. Send Huiming to the Medicine Buddha for recuperation. Once his inner demon deviation dissipates, we shall question him thoroughly regarding the cause.”
“However, there is another matter requiring discussion with all esteemed cultivators.”
The expressions of the Bodhisattvas and Arhats immediately became more solemn.
Datongguang Buddha continued:
“Some time ago, the Eastern Immortal Court dispatched an envoy to Spirit Mountain, delivering a message from the Azure Emperor.”
“The Azure Emperor wishes to form an alliance with our Buddhist Sect to jointly resist the great tribulation of heaven and earth.”
“The conditions he offered—I presume all of you have already heard rumors of them.”
The moment these words were spoken, the atmosphere within the hall grew heavy once more.
Guangmuzun Bodhisattva frowned slightly and spoke first:
“This disciple has heard a little regarding the Azure Emperor’s conditions.”
“He wishes to borrow the three supreme treasures of our Buddhist Sect—the Scriptures of Past, Present, and Future—claiming he wishes to comprehend the Dao of karma contained within them in order to confront the tribulation.”
“As compensation, he is willing to cede seven immortal domains under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Immortal Court to our Buddhist Sect and promises never to violate Buddhist sacred grounds for all eternity.”
Another Bodhisattva continued:
“Seven immortal domains are indeed a tremendous offer. Yet the three scriptures are the very foundation upon which our Buddhist Sect stands. How can they be casually lent to outsiders?”
An Arhat remarked:
“The Azure Emperor’s initiative in seeking alliance may conceal ulterior motives.”
Yet another Bodhisattva inclined toward alliance said:
“With the great tribulation approaching, if the Immortal Dao and Buddhist Dao each fight independently, I fear neither side will withstand it.”
“Since the Azure Emperor has shown sincerity, perhaps this matter should be considered carefully over the long term.”
“If we can obtain those seven immortal domains, the foundation of our Buddhist Sect within the Immortal Realm will become greatly stabilized.”
The hall immediately erupted into debate once more, each side insisting upon its own opinion.
