The man wore a yellow dao robe. His face was cold and stern, while his brows carried the calm composure of one long accustomed to standing above others.
His aura was deliberately suppressed, barely maintained at peak Tribulation Crossing Realm.
This man bore the title True Lord Xuanming.
He was one of the subordinates under the Immortal King Xuanhuang of the Immortal Court within the Immortal Realm.
His true cultivation was at the True Immortal Realm. In the Immortal Realm, he could not be considered any major figure, but once placed within the Spirit Realm, it became dimensional suppression.
This descent into the lower realm had been accomplished through a secret technique suppressing his cultivation to peak Tribulation Crossing Realm, using a passageway from the Immortal Court to tear through the barrier between the two worlds and descend with his true body.
As for why he had come to the Spirit Realm, someone had paid him to handle a matter.
More accurately, someone had given him a massive quantity of immortal essence stones.
Immortal essence stones were the standard currency of the Immortal Realm. They resembled spirit stones but contained immortal spiritual energy within.
Immortals relied upon them for cultivation, pill refinement, formations, and healing.
Compared to them, spirit stones were like coarse bran compared to refined rice.
Spirit stones contained spiritual qi. To immortals, they were merely enough to quench thirst like drinking water — barely usable, yet far inferior to immortal essence stones in nourishment.
The other party had been extremely generous. The amount of immortal essence stones provided was enough for him to cultivate for several hundred years.
As for the task itself, it was rather simple.
He merely needed to destroy a few sects within the Spirit Realm.
At first, True Lord Xuanming had felt somewhat puzzled.
For such a trivial matter, why would the other party refuse to act personally and instead spend such a massive price hiring him to make the trip?
After thinking for a while, he stopped caring.
Within the Immortal Realm, scheming people were everywhere.
Perhaps the other party could not conveniently leave the Immortal Realm.
Perhaps the other party disliked dirtying their own hands.
Or perhaps there were other concerns.
In any case, the immortal essence stones were real.
That was enough.
Money not earned was money wasted.
Besides, descending to the lower realm this time also allowed him to resolve an old matter weighing upon his heart.
True Lord Xuanming stood with hands clasped behind his back atop the clouds, lowering his gaze toward the vast lands of the Spirit Realm below.
Several hundred years ago, he had encountered a powerful enemy within the Immortal Realm and suffered grievous injuries, nearly perishing.
At the critical moment, he had fortunately been saved by a fire phoenix at the Mysterious Immortal Realm. Using her natal true flames, she had preserved his life and healed his injuries, allowing him to survive.
That fire phoenix resided within the Southern Bright Lihuo Heaven. She was an independent cultivator entirely unrelated to him, yet had still chosen to save him.
He had always remembered such a great favor.
Later, he learned that the fire phoenix had a child, bearing the Daoist title True Lord Scarlet Flame. Several hundred years ago, he had descended into the Spirit Realm to travel and unexpectedly died there, his body and soul utterly destroyed, unable even to enter reincarnation.
The fire phoenix had suffered immense grief after losing her beloved son.
At the time, True Lord Xuanming’s cultivation had been too shallow to help, so he could only silently remember the matter in his heart.
Now that he had reached the True Immortal Realm, this descent into the lower realm provided the perfect opportunity to investigate the cause behind True Lord Scarlet Flame’s death.
If the one who killed True Lord Scarlet Flame possessed cultivation far superior to his own, then he would pretend he had discovered nothing and quietly depart without provoking trouble.
But if that person’s cultivation was inferior to his...
A cold light flashed through True Lord Xuanming’s eyes.
Then he would kill them, imprison their soul, and bring it back to the Immortal Realm for the fire phoenix to deal with personally.
In this way, he could repay the life-saving grace of the past and resolve a karmic debt.
He took a deep breath, his figure moving as he transformed into a streak of light and disappeared into the vast sea of clouds within the Spirit Realm.
......
True Lord Xuanming traveled eastward, and before long arrived at the Eastern Continent of the Spirit Realm.
The Eastern Continent was filled with beautiful mountains and rivers, with countless sects standing throughout the land.
One of his targets this time was hidden within a secret realm small world located here — the Tianyan Dao Sect.
The list provided by the employer contained five sects, and the Tianyan Dao Sect was ranked first.
According to the information, this sect possessed considerable foundations, with Great Ascension and Tribulation Crossing Realm cultivators presiding over it.
True Lord Xuanming did not care in the slightest.
Tribulation Crossing Realm?
In his eyes, they were no different from ants.
Following the location given to him, he arrived at the entrance to the secret realm. Raising a hand, he tore open a fissure in space and stepped inside.
Within the secret realm was another world entirely.
Mountains surrounded the area while halls and pavilions were built along the slopes. Waterfalls and flowing springs adorned the scenery.
Atop a distant main peak, one could vaguely see the carved words “Tianyan.” The strokes were vigorous and imposing.
True Lord Xuanming looked down upon everything below with complete indifference, as though observing ants.
He might as well begin here.
Slowly raising his right hand, immortal essence gathered within his palm.
In an instant, heaven and earth changed color.
Below, within the Tianyan Dao Sect, the sect-protecting grand formation sensed the danger and suddenly activated.
A barrier of light rose from every direction, enveloping the entire sect.
The grand formation had been activated.
At the same time, a streak of sword light shot upward from somewhere within the Tianyan Dao Sect.
The sword qi was sharp and fierce, stabbing directly toward True Lord Xuanming’s face.
The one wielding the sword was a late-stage Great Ascension Realm cultivator of the Tianyan Dao Sect named Zhou Ziyang.
Today, he had been idly wandering through the mountains when he suddenly sensed a terrifying pressure descending from the heavens. Looking upward, he saw a figure standing within the void seemingly preparing to attack the sect.
Without time to think, he immediately drew his sword.
This strike contained the entirety of his lifelong cultivation.
Then there was nothing afterward.
True Lord Xuanming did not even spare him a direct glance, merely waving his hand casually.
Zhou Ziyang did not even have time to scream before he was blasted flying backward, crashing through three mountain peaks before finally embedding himself into a cliff wall, his life or death unknown.
One sword.
One palm.
The gap between them was actually this vast.
Deep within the Tianyan Dao Sect, several powerful auras suddenly erupted.
Figures shot into the sky one after another — all of them Tribulation Crossing Realm ancestors.
Leading them was an old man with white hair and flowing dao robes. He was the strongest ancestor of the Tianyan Dao Sect, Tianyanzi.
Tianyanzi first glanced toward Zhou Ziyang embedded within the cliff wall, then toward the yellow-robed figure standing within the void. His expression became extremely solemn.
Cupping his fists, he said:
“Senior, may I ask how my Tianyan Dao Sect has offended you? Why has Senior acted with such severity?”
True Lord Xuanming lowered his eyes toward him and could not even be bothered to answer.
Tianyanzi continued:
“Senior’s cultivation is profound. We acknowledge ourselves incapable of matching you. But Senior should at least provide a reason so we may die understanding why.”
True Lord Xuanming still remained silent.
He could hardly say that someone had paid him to destroy their sect.
That would lower his status too much.
Seeing no reply, Tianyanzi already understood that today’s matter could not be peacefully resolved. He immediately ceased wasting words.
Taking a deep breath, he reached into his robes and retrieved an object.
It was a talisman.
Precisely the Dragon Talisman left behind long ago by Gu Yan’s external incarnation, Dragon Lord.
This talisman had now become the Tianyan Dao Sect’s sect-protecting treasure.
Tianyanzi had tested it once before and knew its terrifying power.
Facing this man today, he had no intention of holding back.
The Dragon Talisman flashed with light.
A fist force erupted from within the talisman. Invisible and formless, yet carrying the crushing might of mountains pressing downward.
Wherever the fist force passed, space collapsed and heaven and earth lost color.
True Lord Xuanming’s pupils suddenly contracted as he instinctively raised a hand to block.
Boom!
The fist force slammed directly into his chest.
True Lord Xuanming groaned as his entire body was blasted backward thousands of meters. A mouthful of blood sprayed across the sky.
Steadying himself, he lowered his head toward his chest, disbelief filling his eyes.
Although he had suppressed his cultivation to peak Tribulation Crossing Realm, his physical body remained a genuine True Immortal Realm body.
A true immortal body.
Even if he stood motionless and allowed Tribulation Crossing cultivators to attack him for three days and nights, they would never be able to injure him in the slightest.
Yet that fist force just now had actually wounded him.
And not lightly.
True Lord Xuanming’s expression turned dark as water.
Meanwhile, Tianyanzi was overjoyed.
The might of the Dragon Talisman had caused this mysterious enemy to cough blood in a single strike. Clearly, although this person was powerful, he was not invincible.
Tianyanzi swept his gaze across the Tribulation Crossing Realm junior brothers behind him and sternly shouted:
“Junior brothers, this man has already suffered heavy injuries! Let us attack together and deny him any opportunity to recover!”
The various ancestors responded in unison, each unleashing their own methods. Sword lights, spells, and divine abilities rained down overwhelmingly toward True Lord Xuanming.
True Lord Xuanming’s face turned extremely ugly.
He was currently heavily injured, and his battle strength had fallen drastically.
If this were the Immortal Realm, he could naturally restore his True Immortal Realm cultivation and slap this group of ants to death with one palm.
But before descending into the lower realm, in order to deceive the Heavenly Dao, he had placed restrictions within his body that forcibly suppressed his cultivation at peak Tribulation Crossing Realm.
Removing them required time.
Furthermore, doing so would invite punishment from the Heavenly Dao.
Grinding his teeth, True Lord Xuanming made a decision.
Run.
His figure twisted and transformed into a streak of light, shooting toward the exit of the secret realm.
Though heavily injured, he still possessed the foundation of a True Immortal Realm expert. In terms of escaping, he was far beyond what a group of Tribulation Crossing cultivators could compare to.
Within only a few breaths, he had already rushed out of the secret realm and disappeared beyond the horizon.
Tianyanzi and the others chased him to the secret realm entrance before stopping and looking at one another.
“Should we pursue him?” one ancestor asked.
Tianyanzi shook his head and put away the Dragon Talisman.
“There is no need.”
“This person’s origins are unknown, and his cultivation is bizarre. Being able to force him back is already fortunate.”
“If we pursue him and he launches a desperate counterattack, things may become unfavorable.”
The various ancestors nodded in agreement and dispersed.
Only Tianyanzi remained standing within the void, lowering his head to look at the Dragon Talisman in his hand. Joy and worry simultaneously filled his heart.
He rejoiced because the Dragon Talisman truly possessed terrifying power.
He worried because each use reduced its remaining power.
Now, only seven uses remained.
......
True Lord Xuanming fled at full speed, flying an unknown distance before finally confirming that no one was pursuing him. Only then did he descend upon a desolate mountain.
Sitting cross-legged, he retrieved a healing pill and swallowed it before circulating his cultivation to heal. Yet his expression remained gloomy.
This trip had resulted in enormous losses.
The immortal essence stones had not even warmed in his possession before he had already suffered a vicious blow.
He still did not know the origin of that fist force, yet it had been capable of injuring a true immortal body.
Had his physical body not been exceptionally sturdy, an ordinary True Immortal Realm cultivator might have perished on the spot.
The more True Lord Xuanming thought about it, the angrier he became.
He felt that he had been set up.
The person who hired him definitely knew the Tianyan Dao Sect possessed such a trump card, yet deliberately failed to inform him. They had clearly intended to screw him over.
No wonder the other party refused to act personally.
No wonder they were willing to spend so many immortal essence stones.
They had treated him like a disposable spear, sending him ahead to test the danger.
True Lord Xuanming gritted his teeth, already making his decision.
This job—
He was no longer doing it.
As for the remaining four sects on the list, whoever wanted to destroy them could do it themselves.
True Lord Xuanming might be greedy for wealth, but he was not stupid.
If he lost his life, what use would immortal essence stones be?
Once he returned, he would definitely settle this account properly with that person.
But for now, this matter could wait.
After regulating his breathing for a while and stabilizing his injuries somewhat, True Lord Xuanming had already formed a plan.
This descent into the lower realm could postpone the matter of destroying sects, but he absolutely could not neglect investigating the cause behind True Lord Scarlet Flame’s death.
Otherwise, this entire trip to the Spirit Realm would truly have been meaningless.
True Lord Xuanming concealed his aura and transformed into an inconspicuous streak of light, flying low above the lands of the Eastern Continent.
As he flew, he continuously swept the area below with divine sense, searching for sects or cultivators who might know something about the events of several hundred years ago.
As he traveled, a cluster of buildings gradually appeared ahead.
Palaces and pavilions stretched continuously across the landscape. The spiritual energy was not especially dense, yet the place carried a quiet elegance.
True Lord Xuanming casually probed the sect with divine sense and discovered that there were no particularly powerful auras present.
The strongest among them was merely at the Void Refinement Realm. The rest were only Transformation Spirit and Nascent Soul cultivators.
In his eyes, they were no different from ants.
True Lord Xuanming slowed his escape speed and let his gaze fall upon the plaque at the sect entrance.
Azure Wave Sect.
Quite an elegant name.
Since he needed to gather information anyway, a small sect like this, with many disciples and mixed sources of information, would actually be easier to extract news from than the great sects.
And since the sect was weak, he need not worry about encountering danger.
In that case, he might as well first take a look at this Azure Wave Sect.
