His consciousness sank into his sea of consciousness and established contact with the original body, Gu Yan.

Within the Supreme Creation Lesser Luo Grotto Heaven, inside Longevity Hall.

Gu Yan sat cross-legged upon a meditation cushion. Sensing the intent transmitted by Nether Soul, he slowly opened his eyes.

“The two kneel beneath the mountain, seeking a thread of survival?”

Nether Soul clearly explained the purpose of the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix and Xue Yuan’s arrival.

Gu Yan pondered for a moment.

The Nine Nether Ice Phoenix, former ruler of the Northern Plains, bearer of the Heaven-Peering Scar.

Gu Yan knew a little of this demon’s origins.

Ever since the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix had awakened in the past, though he acted domineeringly, he had maintained one bottom line—

He did not devour humans to increase his cultivation.

Among demonkind, this was already quite rare.

The demon race of the Spirit Realm was as numerous as the hairs on an ox. Those who devoured human cultivators to strengthen themselves were everywhere.

For the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix to uphold this boundary, regardless of his reasons, showed that he still possessed principles within his heart.

And then there was Xue Yuan.

Back when Ye Chen was still in the Spirit Realm, this demon had once provided him with some protection.

Gu Yan considered it for a while before transmitting his thoughts.

“Let those two remain kneeling beneath the mountain for now.”

“If they do not leave within five years, then for the sake of Xue Yuan’s past protection of Ye Chen, bring them into the Supreme Creation Lesser Luo Grotto Heaven.”

Nether Soul acknowledged the order, and the mental connection was severed.

Within the pavilion, Nether Soul opened his eyes and carefully considered the original body’s intentions.

Night descended, and the river of stars hung across the heavens.

Nether Soul carried a wine jar up onto the pavilion roof, found a comfortable spot, and lay down while drinking wine and gazing at the stars.

After staring for quite some time, he felt that merely watching stars without reciting something made him seem uncultured.

Thus he cleared his throat and recited:

“The stars hang low above the vast plains...”

After reciting half a line, he forgot the rest.

He took a sip of wine and switched poems.

“Raising my head, I gaze at the bright moon; lowering it, I think of home.”

After finishing, he felt it did not quite fit the atmosphere.

There was not even a moon tonight.

Forget it.

Nether Soul set aside the wine jar, pulled out a flute from behind him, and casually played into the night wind.

He paid no attention to melody.

Whatever came to mind, he played.

At one moment, it was a sorrowful little tune about the “Desolate Heavenly Emperor.”

The next moment it became an impassioned battle anthem.

Once fully immersed, he switched to the zither instead.

The dull sounds of kowtowing from beneath the mountain rose and fell intermittently, mixing together with the zither music in a way that strangely did not feel out of place.

When the song ended, Nether Soul yawned.

The original body was bitterly meditating and breathing within the grotto heaven, while he drank wine, watched stars, played flute, and strummed the zither.

If he still had to cultivate on top of that, then what was the point of being a clone?

Nether Soul casually shoved the zither aside, rolled over, and fell asleep atop the roof tiles.

The night wind drifted by.

The starry river remained silent.

Only after the sky had fully brightened the next day did Nether Soul leisurely awaken.

Stretching lazily, he summoned his flying sword and rode it toward the nearest cultivator marketplace.

That trip lasted the entire day.

By the time he returned to the Azure Wave Sect, dusk had already descended.

At the foot of the mountain, the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix and Xue Yuan still knelt in the same place.

While he had been away the entire day, those two figures had kowtowed toward the direction of his departure for the entire day as well.

When they saw him return, the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix slightly paused, yet said nothing, merely smashing his forehead heavily against the ground once more.

Xue Yuan did the same.

Nether Soul walked past them without stopping, his gaze never shifting.

Thus day after day, year after year passed.

Whenever Nether Soul left the sect, the two demons kowtowed toward the direction of his departure.

Whenever he returned, the two demons kowtowed toward the direction of his residence.

They did not stop because he left.

Nor did they speak an extra word because he returned.

As the sun rose and the moon fell, regardless of wind or rain, it continued unceasingly.

Under the torment of the Heaven-Peering Scar, the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix’s face had become pale as paper, yet he never uttered a single complaint.

His cultivation had now fallen to the mid-stage Integration Realm, and even his magical power silently dissipated day by day.

For him, kneeling and kowtowing like this was not merely a gesture.

It was genuine torment.

Yet he dared not stop.

He recalled that dream.

The dream had begun after he fell into slumber.

At first, it consisted only of fragmented scenes, blurry as though separated by a veil.

He saw a mountain.

Saw a sect upon that mountain.

Saw a pavilion on the sect’s rear mountain.

And within that pavilion sat a person.

That person’s face could not be seen clearly, yet the aura was unfathomably deep.

Later, the dream gradually became clearer.

He saw himself kneeling beneath that mountain, kowtowing toward the pavilion.

Kowtowing for a very, very long time.

So long that he believed he would remain kneeling there forever.

Yet many years later, the pavilion doors opened.

That person walked out and spoke a sentence to him.

But after waking, the Nine Nether Ice Phoenix could no longer remember what that sentence had been.

Even so, he still remembered the feeling with perfect clarity.

It was the feeling of surviving after reaching utter despair.

The feeling of being pulled back after falling from a cliff’s edge.

He did not know why he had such a dream.

Perhaps it was because of the Heaven-Peering Scar.

That wound branded upon his divine soul by the Heavenly Dao ceaselessly wore away his cultivation day and night, yet it also caused a subtle connection to form between his divine soul and the Heavenly Dao itself.

Within the gaps of the Heavenly Dao’s operation, he glimpsed that single thread of survival.

Or perhaps it was some kind of guidance from fate itself.

He had once used Iceheart Peering into Heaven to glimpse the future. Heavenly secrets retaliated against him, descending as the Heaven-Peering Scar, yet they had not completely severed his path.

That scar was like a double-edged sword.

One side severed his foundation.

The other pointed toward a path of survival.

Thus he awakened.

Rising from his place of slumber within the Northern Plains, dragging along his ruined body, he journeyed all the way toward the Eastern Continent.

Knowing full well it was a dream—

Yet forced to believe it.
