And the purpose of their arrival was not to conquer the Spirit Realm in one fell swoop.

The Blood Slaughter Patriarch had long since given her orders.

Two-tenths of the forces were to disperse and infiltrate every corner of the Spirit Realm—kill whenever possible, destroy whenever possible, sow chaos whenever possible.

The remaining eight-tenths would remain stationed in the Northern Plains, consolidating the passageway and guarding against a counterattack from the major sects of the Spirit Realm.

The strategy was not particularly brilliant, but it was practical.

Thus, in only a few short months, turmoil erupted throughout the Spirit Realm.

......

At the border of the Northern Plains, near the territory of the Eastern Continent—

There was a small village called Jiang Family Village.

The village was not large, only around a hundred households. The villagers lived off the mountains and rivers. Though life was not wealthy, it was peaceful enough.

There was a little boy in the village. No one knew his surname, his full name, or where he came from.

Three years ago, when old hunter Jiang had found him by the roadside, the child had been so skinny he looked like a sack of bones wrapped in skin. Clutched in his arms was half a hard cake so stiff that no matter how one tried to break it apart, it would not split.

Old Jiang was kindhearted. He brought the child back to the village and gave him a name—

Jiang Mingzi.

Though the villagers themselves lived frugally, one family would give him a bowl of porridge, another a piece of flatbread, and somehow they managed to raise the child.

Jiang Mingzi did not like talking much, but if anyone helped him even once, he would remember it for a lifetime.

The village children mocked his rustic name, yet he never got angry. He would simply grin, revealing a mouthful of little white teeth.

In Jiang Mingzi’s heart, Jiang Family Village was his home, and the villagers were his family.

That evening, Jiang Mingzi was catching fish by the creek outside the village when he suddenly heard rustling sounds from the grass nearby.

Pushing aside the grass leaves, he saw a little girl curled up within the brush.

Her clothes were ragged, her hair messy, and her large round eyes stared pitifully at him.

“Y-You... who are you?” Jiang Mingzi asked.

The little girl timidly replied, “I... I was passing through here with my father, but we got separated. I’m hungry and thirsty. Could you give me something to eat?”

Jiang Mingzi hesitated for a moment before pulling half a piece of dry food from his clothes and handing it to her.

The little girl accepted it and ate in tiny bites while tears continuously dripped down her face.

“Thank you. You’re really kind,” she said while wiping her tears.

“Can you take me back to your home? I don’t dare stay outside alone. It’s getting dark, and I’m scared.”

Jiang Mingzi thought for a moment, then nodded.

He brought the little girl back to Jiang Family Village. The villagers did not think much of it, merely assuming she was the child of some refugee family.

One woman brought her a bowl of hot porridge, while an old man draped an old coat over her shoulders.

The little girl had a sweet mouth, calling everyone grandfather, grandmother, uncle, and auntie one after another, melting the hearts of the villagers.

That night, Jiang Mingzi settled the little girl in his family’s woodshed while he himself lay atop a pile of hay, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

He kept feeling that something was wrong.

But he could not say what exactly.

In the latter half of the night, Jiang Mingzi was awakened by a strange sound.

It sounded like chewing.

Like swallowing.

The sounds came continuously from within the village.

He climbed up and pushed open the woodshed door to look outside.

Under the moonlight, the little girl stood in the center of the village.

No.

That was not a little girl.

It was a humanoid shadow. Its facial features were twisted, its limbs bent at unnatural angles.

Something writhed beneath its skin, as though it were devouring something.

Scattered all around its feet were the villagers.

Jiang Mingzi’s entire body stiffened, his mind going completely blank.

He saw the shadow turn its head and smile at him.

The face looked as though someone had casually molded its features by hand. Its eyes were crooked, and its mouth stretched all the way to its ears.

“Little thing, don’t be afraid.”

The shadow extended one arm toward Jiang Mingzi.

That arm had already been roasted to a charred golden color, sizzling with oil and emitting a bizarre aroma of cooked meat.

“You’re hungry, aren’t you? Eat.”

Jiang Mingzi wanted to shake his head.

Wanted to retreat.

But he discovered that his body no longer obeyed him.

An invisible force had seized him.

His arm raised on its own and accepted that fragrant “meat.”

His mouth opened by itself and bit down.

He wanted to vomit, but his mouth ignored him, mechanically chewing and swallowing.

Tears poured from his eyes uncontrollably.

He cried while eating.

His body was like a puppet on strings, every movement no longer belonging to himself.

The shadow crouched nearby, tilting its head while watching Jiang Mingzi cry and chew with fascinated interest, as though appreciating a marvelous play.

Only after Jiang Mingzi gnawed the arm completely clean did it finally split its mouth wide open, revealing jagged sharp teeth.

“The human children of the Spirit Realm are far purer than those from the Demon Realm.”

“The little human brats in the Demon Realm piss themselves after a little scare. They can’t even cry properly.”

“But you—crying while eating, with such rich expressions on your face. Much more interesting.”

As it spoke, its body began to swell and distort, revealing its true appearance.

It was a completely pitch-black demon creature covered in bone spikes, hideous in appearance, drool dripping endlessly from its maw.

This demon was infamous within the Demon Realm. No one remembered its true name anymore. Only its nickname remained—

Bone Eater.

Back in the Demon Realm, Bone Eater’s favorite pastime had been sneaking into human villages and using illusions to deceive children.

Then, through the children’s hands, it would open the village’s restrictions before slowly devouring every elder, adult, and child one by one.

What it enjoyed was not slaughter itself, but the fear and despair of its prey before death.

Especially the expressions on those human children’s faces when they discovered they themselves had caused the deaths of all their loved ones.

That was the finest seasoning for its meals.

Bone Eater licked its lips and opened its enormous bloody maw, preparing to bite down on Jiang Mingzi.

At that exact moment, a streak of sword light descended from the horizon.

The sword light was incomparably sharp, striking directly into Bone Eater’s back.

Bone Eater let out a miserable scream as half its body was sliced away. Black blood sprayed wildly outward.

“Who is it?!”

Bone Eater roared furiously as it turned around, only to see a middle-aged cultivator in a green robe standing in the air, a chilling sword gleaming in his hand.

The cultivator had a lean face, and his cultivation had actually reached the Void Refinement Realm.

His name was Lu Heng, an elder of the Azure Wave Sect. This time, he had gone out traveling and happened to pass by the Northern Plains border. Originally, he had intended to venture farther north to witness the customs and scenery of the Northern Plains.

Who could have expected that upon arriving here, he would suddenly sense a dense surge of demonic qi?

Following the demonic qi, he arrived here and witnessed the tragic destruction of the village.

As well as this pitch-black, hideous demon creature.

Lu Heng had cultivated within the Azure Wave Sect for many years. He had never visited the Northern Plains, nor had he ever seen demons before.

He only knew that the Spirit Realm had demonic cultivators, and demonic cultivators were still human cultivators, merely practicing sinister arts.

Yet this creature before him was pitch-black, covered in jagged bone spikes, and utterly inhuman in appearance. Though doubts rose in his heart, there was no time to think further.

Whatever it was, killing it first was the right answer.

Lu Heng raised his sword once more, slicing away the remaining half of Bone Eater’s body.

This time, Bone Eater did not even have the chance to scream before turning into a puddle of black liquid and dissipating into the night.

Lu Heng sheathed his sword and descended to the ground, surveying the surroundings with tightly furrowed brows.

The village had been destroyed beyond recognition.

Along his journey, he had already encountered several scenes like this.

But none were as horrifying as this one.

What exactly had happened to the Northern Plains?

And those bizarre... things—where had they come from?

Lu Heng shook his head, temporarily suppressing the doubts in his heart.

He lowered his gaze toward the trembling little boy crouched on the ground and softly asked, “Child, what is your name?”

Jiang Mingzi raised his head. His eyes were swollen red, and his voice was hoarse.

“J-Jiang Mingzi.”

“Jiang Mingzi.” Lu Heng nodded.

“You can’t stay here anymore. Come with me.”

Jiang Mingzi did not answer.

He merely turned back to glance at the old tree at the village entrance.

Under the moonlight, the hanging figures resembled the final leaves of autumn.

Lu Heng said nothing further. He reached out, picked Jiang Mingzi up, and leapt into the air.

Originally, he had planned to continue traveling farther north.

Now, however, there was no need.

With the Northern Plains in this state, a mere Void Refinement cultivator like him could not afford to get involved.

Better to first bring this child back to the Azure Wave Sect and settle him there.

As for the matters of the Northern Plains, the sect master and elders would decide what to do.
