I Return From Hell
Chapter 44 - 42: Borrowing Another Blade
Chapter 44: Chapter 42: Borrowing Another Blade
The people outside were completely focused on fighting the Mutants, utterly oblivious to what was happening inside the car.
Even so, they were in imminent danger; the defensive line could collapse at any moment.
SCRAPE.
The car window was slowly being scraped open, and one could vaguely make out a sharp claw doing the work.
The mutt’s ears twitched as it keenly sensed the situation behind it.
It started barking loudly, trying to warn Xie Shaokun and the others, but no one paid it any attention. As it watched the window being completely scraped open to reveal a pair of bloodshot, nearly crimson eyes, the mutt stumbled back a step in fear, its barks growing louder and more frantic.
Still, no one paid it any mind.
A survivor, annoyed by the noise, cursed, "Doggy, will you shut the fuck up."
The creature with the nearly crimson eyes had a clear goal. The moment it cut through the window, it locked onto Xie Shaokun’s back and lunged without hesitation.
It moved with incredible speed, becoming a black blur.
BARK! BARK!
The mutt suddenly darted forward.
RIIIIP.
The black shadow’s claws easily sliced through its body, even severing bone.
It was killed in an instant.
"Doggy!"
At that exact moment, Xie Shaokun turned his head. He instantly understood everything. Burning with rage, he ignored the Mutant attacking him from behind and charged straight at the red-eyed shadow.
WHOOSH.
With its ambush foiled, the red-eyed shadow didn’t stick around. It turned, leaped onto the car’s roof, and with a second jump, disappeared into the darkness.
’What the hell was that thing!’
The realization hit Xie Shaokun, and he broke out in a cold sweat.
He scooped up the lifeless body of the mutt, gritting his teeth in fury.
Yet he also felt a profound sense of powerlessness.
The moment the red-eyed shadow attacked, he too had sensed the mortal danger. He’d subconsciously tried to turn, but it was just too fast. If Doggy hadn’t blocked the attack for him...
...he would be the one who was dead!
He figured the dog had saved him because he had saved the dog before.
In that moment, he was deeply moved. It was the first time he had truly understood a dog’s intelligence.
A Mutant pounced at Xie Shaokun’s back.
"Xie Shaokun, look out!"
Wang Quanzhi, who was nearby, knew his own limits. Instead of confronting it head-on, he stuck out a leg and tripped the Mutant.
Hearing the commotion, Xie Shaokun spun around and cut down the Mutant behind him.
He had no choice but to lay Doggy’s body down behind him and throw himself back into the fight. If he didn’t, everyone was going to die.
The battle continued.
Wang Quanzhi and the others used their Weapons and their own Power to hold back the Mutants, trying to keep them from breaking the formation. That was the most they could do to help Xie Shaokun.
But their strength wasn’t enough, and they were steadily forced back.
The wooden clubs snapped one after another.
The bricks were useless.
Some of the other Mutants didn’t charge head-on. Instead, they leaped onto the car roof, completely surrounding Xie Shaokun and the others.
The formation crumbled.
In an instant, one man was tackled to the ground by a Mutant.
The first casualty had fallen.
VROOOM.
The roar of an engine suddenly thundered.
THUD.
...
A Tank 500 came roaring in, sending several Mutants flying. It plowed through them, finally stopping with its door right in front of the group. "Get in!"
Wang Quanzhi yanked the door open, scrambled inside, and went straight for the cargo area, clearly making room for the people behind him.
You had to admit, the guy was quick-witted in a crisis.
Unfortunately...
Two of them were tackled by Mutants before they could get in.
The last man didn’t spare a glance for his two comrades-in-arms. He slammed the door shut and held onto the handle, terrified it would be pried open again.
Xie Shaokun was bringing up the rear. He was powerless to do anything but watch. In fact, with those two down, the pressure around him suddenly lessened.
He took the opportunity to open the passenger-side door and scrambled in, but the door wouldn’t close; a Mutant’s hand was stuck in it.
VROOOM.
A deafening roar sounded.
The vehicle began to accelerate forward.
"Son of a bitch!"
Not yet steady in his seat, Xie Shaokun had no time to adjust. He swung his blade and hacked off the hand wedged in the door. But the door still wouldn’t shut. He couldn’t reach the part of the arm crushed in the jamb. To make matters worse, two more hands grabbed the door’s edge, prying it open even wider.
Just as he was about to swing again, he felt something thump against his abdomen. He looked down and saw a gun.
Xie Shaokun’s eyes lit up.
’It’s Nian Dali’s gun!’
’Yu gave it to me!’
Xie Shaokun understood. He kicked the door hard, catching the Mutants hanging on it completely off guard.
BANG!
BANG!
Two shots rang out.
The door slammed shut.
The car was finally picking up speed, but there was a Mutant on the windshield, one on the roof, and one on the side mirror.
Behind the car, a large horde of Mutants gave chase.
Xia Yu couldn’t see a thing. Relying solely on her knowledge of the pick-your-own orchard’s layout, she drove straight toward the glass greenhouse.
CRACK.
Soon, the Mutant on the windshield had cracked the glass.
One more attack and it would be inside the car.
Just as Xie Shaokun was about to shoot again, Xia Yu caught him out of the corner of her eye. Not wanting him to waste bullets, she yanked the steering wheel, throwing all the Mutants—from the windshield, the mirror, and the roof—off the car.
At last.
The car quickly pulled away from the Mutants, roaring past the glass greenhouse.
If she hadn’t been worried about crushing that Spiritual Plant, she would have driven straight through the patch of sunflowers.
Then, she turned the car around.
She did her best to create a straight line between the car, the middle of the sunflower patch, and the Mutant horde.
This way, the mindless Mutants would run straight through the sunflowers.
And thus, she would achieve her goal:
Sunflowers vs. Mutants.
She did it.
ROAR.
...
This horde of Mutants didn’t understand the concept of glass and slammed right into it. The tempered glass immediately shattered.
But as the Mutants at the front of the charge entered the glass greenhouse and got within two meters of the sunflowers, they sensed danger and subconsciously tried to dodge.
Unfortunately, it was too late.
They couldn’t stop!
At the same time, countless Roots burst from the soil, shooting straight for the horde of Mutants.
The battle began!
"What the hell are those things? They’re fighting the Mutants."
"Look!"
Wang Quanzhi, in the back, noticed the scene and wiped furiously at the rear window to get a better look.
The car stopped.
Wang Quanzhi and the others all got out, their faces a mixture of shock and joy as they watched the chaotic scene.
’We’re going to live!’
Xie Shaokun wanted to get out and watch, too.
Xia Yu’s voice rang out...
