I Reincarnated in a Novel World as a Villain?
Chapter 27: Cold Dawn on the Academy Courtyard
The bite of cold night wind slapped my face the moment we burst out of the emergency tunnel exit, leaving behind a pile of rubble and dust from the underground labyrinth now completely buried. My boots landed somewhat clumsily on the wet grass of the academy's back courtyard, my breathing irregular, while lingering ice mana sparks on my fingertips flickered weakly before dying out completely.
*Huff... puff... damn, I almost got buried alive in that underground grave!*
Beside me, Prince Leonhardt also landed on one knee. The silver-blonde youth supported his weight on a golden sword blade looking dull and stripped of its bright sheen. His breathing sounded heavy, and a thin scratch at the corner of his lips bled fresh blood—clear proof of how brutal the battle against the shadow monster horde down below had been.
The back courtyard atmosphere at that early hour was deathly quiet, lit by a half-moon hanging high in the dark sky. Not a single monitor or student wandered this remote area, keeping our presence out of the public eye. A huge blessing for us, because if other nobles saw our current state—especially the crown prince and the notorious arrogant villainess battered together—a massive scandal would erupt by morning.
Prince Leonhardt slowly stood up, straightening his posture despite stiff movements from extreme exhaustion. He sheathed his sword back into its hip scabbard, then turned his head to look at me with an unreadable gaze under the dim night light.
"Are you alright, Lady Alicia?" he asked in a raspy bariton voice, no longer as cold and sarcastic as when we debated in the classroom or corridor.
I straightened my dusty, dirt-smudged cloak, lifting my chin even though my entire body felt wracked with pain from total mana depletion. As a villainess, showing pain or weakness before the prince was an absolute taboo that could never be broken.
"Save your useless sympathy, Your Highness," I retorted coldly, curving my lips into a thin, cynical smile despite the sting on my lips. "My physique is far tougher than you imagine. What you should worry about isn't me, but how we explain tonight's incident without sparking suspicion from the Sterling faction and imperial traitors."
Hearing my words, Prince Leonhardt's expression hardened instantly. He understood the political implications of the underground labyrinth event all too well. The shadow faction had bared their fangs openly, proving their network had infiltrated Alistair Academy's defense systems. The presence of shadow monsters and assassination attempts marked a shift from cold noble war into actual bloodshed.
"Regarding the shadow faction... what did they tell you while you were alone in the labyrinth before I arrived?" Leonhardt inquired sharply, probing with a piercing gaze demanding honesty.
I scoffed softly, staring straight into the prince's ice-blue eyes without a trace of intimidation. "They didn't waste much time. That masked leader offered a cooperation pact—or rather, a veiled threat. They know my secret identity, and they also know the imperial faction's dirty plan to frame my father, Duke Valerian, for military treason soon."
Prince Leonhardt froze momentarily. His brow furrowed deep, revealing shock he couldn't entirely hide. "Framing Duke Valerian...? How on earth could the shadow faction know about top-secret high military council plans?"
"That's the core of the problem, Prince," I said with a serious tone, stepping closer to make the urgent situation clear. "It means their spy network operates far beyond academy students or dirty capital alleys. They've infiltrated deep into the empire's core government structure, perhaps even within the royal family's closest circle."
Silence descended between us once more. The biting dawn wind felt like a chilling reminder of how fragile our position was. On one side, the court suspected the Valerian house of a coup; on the other, the shadow faction sought to exploit that chaos to destroy the royal system from within. And I, a modern soul trapped inside a novel's villainess body, found myself right in the middle of this lethal political storm.
"So... what was your answer?" Leonhardt asked softly, his voice close, his eyes staring intently as if reading the swirling thoughts in my head. "Did you accept that shadow faction leader's cooperation offer, Alicia?"
I chuckled lightly, a cynical laugh echoing softly in the quiet courtyard. "Accept? Don't be foolish, Your Highness. I might not be a holy saint caring for world peace, but I'm not crazy enough to hand my neck over to a dark organization treating murder as a daily hobby. I only want to survive, and the best way to survive is to crush anyone playing with my destiny—including the shadow faction and whoever in court wants to bring down my family."
Prince Leonhardt remained silent for a long time, listening to that firm, confident answer. For a second, the corner of his lips lifted into a nearly invisible faint smile—a rare expression he'd never shown anyone during academy life.
"You really are a dangerous woman, Lady Alicia," Leonhardt murmured quietly. "From now on... it seems we have no choice but to form an emergency alliance. You and I, working secretly to dismantle the shadow faction network before they destroy this academy."
I raised an eyebrow, finding the offer intriguing despite its annoyance. "A fragile alliance between a hated villainess and an overly inquisitive crown prince. A terrible combination for a fairy tale."
"Fairy tales never have endings as complicated as this," Leonhardt replied briefly, turning to walk toward the male dorm path. "Get some rest, Alicia. Tomorrow morning, the real battle begins before the faculty council."
I watched Prince Leonhardt's back disappear into the dark corridor. The long, exhausting night finally neared its end, yet I knew the dawn breaking on the eastern horizon brought no peace, only the start of a much crueler political intrigue chapter at Alistair Academy.
