I Reincarnated in a Novel World as a Villain?

Chapter 24: Blood Pact Behind the Underground Labyrinth

  • Next Chapter

The damp smell of old stone mixed with rotten moss greeted my nostrils as the hidden door behind the old academy library's bookshelf creaked shut. Darkness swallowed me whole, leaving behind a tiny blue magic flame I conjured at my fingertip to illuminate a steep, descending stone pathway.

*This is absolute madness, the craziest decision I've ever made in my life.*

My brain screamed warnings telling me to turn back immediately and return to my warm dorm room. Yet, curiosity blended with raw survival instinct urged me forward. An anonymous note slipped into my study desk drawer earlier that afternoon carried vital information about the true leader of the shadow faction targeting my life, as well as the mastermind behind the grand conspiracy threatening the Valerian family's military standing.

My footsteps echoed softly down the silent underground corridor. The stone walls on either side bore glowing, faint moss providing a surreal bluish hue to the surroundings. This area clearly didn't belong to official Alistair Magic Academy architecture. It was an ancient labyrinth ruin from past magical wars hidden intentionally from the outside world—a perfect venue for dirty transactions or secret meetings among high-level villains.

Suddenly, surrounding mana shivered violently. The air temperature plummeted drastically, causing my breath to billow into thin white vapor. My reflexes locked in place; my fists clenched, ready to unleash a burst of ice thorns should an ambush strike from ahead.

"Right on time, Lady Alicia. Or should I protest your bravery walking alone straight into a lion's den?"

A cold, heavy baritone voice shattered the silence, bouncing off the stone walls. Emerging from the darkness illuminated by a dim magic torch at the far end of the corridor, a tall figure clad in deep black robes stepped forward. His face hid behind a silver mask patterned with thorned roses, leaving only glowing red eyes fixing a calculated gaze upon me.

My heart pounded furiously, yet I forced my chin upward, maintaining an arrogant, fearless villainess demeanor. "Spare me the pleasantries, masked man. I don't have much spare time for cheap riddles. Tell me what your organization wants from me, and why you've been stalking me since day one."

The masked man chuckled softly. His voice sounded raspy yet authoritative, reflecting someone accustomed to absolute power behind the shadows. He stopped a few meters away, maintaining a cautious distance.

"You're far more interesting than our reports suggested, Alicia," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. "No longer a spoiled girl crying behind her father's coattails. There is a much stronger, sharper, and... foreign soul inhabiting that body now. Our organization knows your little secret. We know you aren't the real Alicia Valerian."

Though I'd suspected this since the poisoned dagger incident days ago, hearing confirmation straight from the shadow faction leader's mouth still froze my blood. All mental defenses were tested to their limits. Showing even a flicker of panic would cost me my life right here without anyone above ground ever knowing.

"What nonsense are you babbling about?" I replied in an icy tone, sneering to brush off the accusation. "If you only called me to this cursed place to tell fairy tales, I'd rather turn back now."

"Don't lie to yourself, young lady," the masked man interrupted swiftly, his tone turning serious and piercing. "The pure ice magic you showed against Prince Leonhardt, the analytical mindset clashing with your past academic records, the way you look at this world with utter boredom—all prove that the soul inside belongs elsewhere. A world untouched by magic."

I froze. My grip on my noble gown tightened. The verbal defenses I built crumbled into dust before this surgical analysis from the man before me. They truly investigated me down to my roots.

"Then... what's the goal?" I finally asked in a strained whisper, dropping the facade of arrogance since hiding it further was pointless. "If you know my identity, why not report me to the church inquisitors or the crown as a black witch possessing a noble body? Why go to the trouble of luring me to this isolated place?"

The masked man stepped forward slowly, his shadow stretching across the damp stone floor. "Because we aren't interested in destroying you, Alicia. Instead... we want to invite you to cooperate."

"Cooperate?" My eyebrows arched high in utter disbelief. "You sent a poisoned assassin to my room, threatened my safety, and now you want to work together? Have you lost your mind?"

"That attack the other night was a test," the man answered calmly without a hint of guilt. "A test to confirm whether you truly possess the capacity to survive the brewing political whirlpool of the royal court. The imperial faction, under Prince Leonhardt and moderate nobles, is planning a massive purge against military houses like yours. Your father, Duke Valerian, will soon be framed for treason."

That revelation struck me like a bolt of lightning. Alicia's original memories regarding her family erupted violently inside my head. The Valerian family served as the empire's primary shield against northern border monsters. If brought down via an imperial political coup, the entire country would descend into total chaos, and my position as a traitor's daughter would inevitably culminate in a gruesome execution.

"Why are you telling me all this?" I asked with a probing gaze, trying to read hidden motives behind that silver mask.

"Because our shadow faction needs a pawn wielding extraordinary ice magic who isn't bound by the corrupt rules of these hypocritical nobles," the man stated firmly, extending a black-gloved hand toward me. "Join us, Alicia. Help us overthrow this rotten royal system, and in exchange, we will not only protect your soul's secret but grant you absolute freedom in this world."

Silence blanketed the underground labyrinth, broken only by my rapid breathing. The offer was fiercely tempting yet dangerously treacherous—a shortcut to survival or a deeper abyss of death.

Before I could answer, a powerful magical explosion roared from the hidden entrance above, followed by a familiar, furious voice shouting my name.

"Lady Alicia! Come out of hiding right now!"

It was Prince Leonhardt's voice.

The masked man clicked his tongue in annoyance, retracting his hand. "It seems the crown's watchdog found this place faster than expected. Think carefully about this offer, Alicia. We will meet again where you least expect it."

In the blink of an eye, the masked man dissolved into thick black mist and vanished without a trace, leaving me alone in the dark underground corridor while echoing magic clashes above shook the ground beneath my feet.
