I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 65: A Familiar Name
Chapter 65: Chapter 65: A Familiar Name
The breakthrough came faster than anyone had expected, barely three days after Ren’s examination of the recovered device had given investigators their crucial lead, and Reven called an urgent briefing the moment the final confirmation came through, his expression carrying a complicated mixture of grim satisfaction and something considerably more troubled underneath it.
"We’ve traced the technology’s true origin," Reven said, pulling up a dense display of supply chain analysis once Ren and Yegard had both settled into the secure briefing chamber. "Three separate component sources, exactly as Ren identified, cross-referenced against manufacturing signatures and shipping manifests going back nearly eight months."
"And," Yegard prompted, something sharp and focused in his tone.
"All three sources trace back to holdings connected to House Castellan," Reven said, and something in the way he delivered the name carried obvious, significant weight that Ren didn’t immediately understand.
"I don’t recognize that name," Ren admitted, glancing between both men.
"House Castellan was once among the Empire’s most powerful noble families," Reven explained, something tight and controlled in his voice despite the obvious tension underlying it. "They held considerable influence for generations, until roughly fifteen years ago, when the current head, Archduke Vance Castellan, was formally stripped of most of his political authority and holdings following his involvement in an attempted coup against my father."
Ren felt his stomach drop at the implications. "He tried to overthrow the Emperor."
"He did," Reven confirmed. "The attempt failed, obviously, though the formal punishment was considerably more lenient than most would have expected, largely due to political considerations regarding House Castellan’s remaining allies within the Council. He was stripped of his seat, his military authority, the bulk of his holdings, but allowed to retain his title and a reduced, closely monitored estate as a concession to avoid further destabilizing the Council’s fragile balance at the time."
"And now he’s apparently decided round two is worth pursuing," Yegard said, something cold and furious entering his tone.
"It appears that way," Reven confirmed. "Using Vorhesk’s existing grievances as convenient cover, funding their radical splinter faction’s activities while maintaining enough distance to avoid direct implication, at least until now."
Ren processed the information slowly, old anxiety and fresh, protective fury tangling together in his chest. "What does this actually mean for us, practically," he asked. "Is he still dangerous, even with his power supposedly stripped away years ago?"
"Dangerously so," Reven said grimly. "He’s spent fifteen years rebuilding influence quietly, through intermediaries and shell operations that have apparently escaped full Council scrutiny until now. This technology alone represents considerable resources, resources he shouldn’t have access to given his formally reduced standing."
"Can we move against him directly," Yegard asked, already shifting into practical, strategic consideration.
"Not without solid proof linking him personally to this specific conspiracy," Reven said, something frustrated entering his tone. "Right now we have circumstantial evidence, enough to justify deeper investigation, but not enough to withstand the kind of legal and political challenge his remaining Council allies would undoubtedly mount if we moved too aggressively without airtight documentation."
Ren felt frustration building at the careful, bureaucratic constraint, old instinct urging him toward more direct, immediate action despite understanding, intellectually, exactly why such caution actually mattered. "So what do we actually do," he asked. "Just wait for him to make another move, hope we catch him with better evidence next time?"
"Not exactly," Reven said, something more calculating entering his expression. "I intend to request formal Council authorization for a deeper, more thorough investigation into House Castellan’s current holdings and activities. Given his history, given the mounting circumstantial evidence, I believe I can secure sufficient support to authorize considerably more invasive scrutiny than his current, reduced status would normally warrant."
"How long would that take," Ren asked.
"Days, likely, rather than weeks," Reven said. "The Council moves slowly on most matters, but given the direct attack on palace grounds, targeting children specifically, I believe urgency works in our favor here."
Yegard’s expression remained tight with controlled fury throughout the exchange, something personal and deeply protective simmering beneath his usual composed exterior. "I want additional security measures implemented immediately regardless," he said. "If Castellan is indeed behind this, and growing desperate enough to risk direct action on palace grounds, I won’t assume he’ll simply wait patiently for Council authorization to catch up to him."
"Agreed," Reven said immediately. "I’ll authorize whatever additional resources you require."
Ren sat with the weight of the revelation for a long moment, turning over the implications of a formally disgraced noble house apparently willing to risk everything on a second attempt at destabilizing the Crown, using his own existence and Milo and Finn’s safety as convenient leverage in whatever larger game Castellan actually intended to play.
"I want to help with this too," Ren said finally, determination settling firm despite the heaviness of the revelation. "Whatever investigation this requires, whatever evidence we need to gather properly, I’m not simply sitting back and waiting while you two handle everything."
"You’ve already contributed significantly," Reven said, something warm cutting through his earlier tension. "But I won’t pretend this particular phase requires your direct ability the way the technical examination did. This is political and legal maneuvering, considerably different terrain than combat or energy signature analysis."
"Then teach me," Ren said, surprising himself slightly with the firmness of the request. "I don’t know anything about Council politics, about how this kind of investigation actually works. But I’m willing to learn, properly, if it means actually understanding and contributing to keeping my family safe, rather than simply waiting on the sidelines for updates."
Something shifted in both men’s expressions at that, genuine respect and affection replacing their earlier protective instinct to shield him from this particular complexity. "I can teach you," Reven said finally, something proud entering his voice. "It won’t be simple, Council politics rarely are, but if you’re genuinely willing to invest the effort, I think you’d actually be quite capable, given everything else you’ve already managed to learn and adapt to since this entire situation began."
"I’m willing," Ren confirmed, determination settling solid and certain despite the daunting prospect of navigating entirely unfamiliar political terrain.
They spent the remainder of the afternoon together, Reven patiently walking Ren through the basic structure of Council politics, the various noble houses and their shifting alliances, the delicate balance of power that made even a formally disgraced house like Castellan’s continued influence possible despite years of reduced standing. Ren absorbed the information with the same focused determination he’d brought to his Sentinel training, asking careful, pointed questions, gradually building a working understanding of the complex political landscape now directly threatening everything he’d worked so hard to build.
By evening, exhausted from the day’s dense political education atop everything else currently demanding his attention, Ren found himself settling into the common area alongside both men, Milo and Finn already engaged in their usual evening routine nearby, and felt, despite the heaviness of Castellan’s revealed involvement, a measure of genuine, grounded satisfaction at having actively contributed to understanding and eventually confronting the threat properly.
"You did well today," Yegard said quietly, settling beside him with evident pride. "Political education isn’t simple, particularly compressed into a single afternoon. You absorbed considerably more than I expected."
"I had good motivation," Ren said, something warm entering his voice despite the day’s accumulated exhaustion. "Whatever it takes to keep all of us safe, properly, permanently, I’m willing to learn it."
Reven settled on his other side, something deeply affectionate in his expression. "We’ll find him," he said quietly, certain despite the investigation’s ongoing complexity. "Castellan, whatever game he thinks he’s playing, however carefully he’s rebuilt his influence over these fifteen years. We’ll find the proof we need, and we’ll end this threat properly, permanently, the way it should have been ended the first time he tried this."
Ren nodded, settling into the warm comfort of both men’s presence, watching Milo and Finn’s easy, uncomplicated evening unfold nearby with grateful, protective relief. ’Whatever Castellan thinks he’s going to accomplish,’ he thought, determination settling solid and certain alongside the day’s exhaustion, ’he picked the wrong family to threaten. We’re not backing down, and we’re not stopping until this is properly, permanently finished.’
