I Reincarnated As The Villain Of The Interstellar Empire [BL]
Chapter 48: Facing It
Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Facing It
Ren stood there for a long moment, Milo’s whispered question still hanging in the air, and felt the entire weight of the last several weeks settle over him at once, every careful step of his escape, every quiet, hard-won moment of peace he’d built with these two boys, all of it balanced now against the simple, unavoidable fact that running again meant dragging Milo and Finn through exactly the kind of frightened, unstable existence he’d spent this entire time trying to give them an escape from.
’I can’t do that to them,’ he thought, watching Finn’s small hand tighten around his brother’s sleeve, watching Milo’s careful, steady composure holding despite the fear clearly simmering underneath it. ’I can’t ask two children who already know what it’s like to run and hide and go hungry to do it again, not because of me, not because I’m too afraid to actually face the people standing on the other side of that door.’
"We’re not running," Ren said finally, and the moment the words left him, some of the frantic, cornered energy in his chest settled into something steadier, more resolved. "I’m going to open that door. I’m going to talk to them. But I need you both to stay in this room until I tell you it’s safe to come out, okay? Whatever happens out there, I need to know you’re both somewhere secure." ℴ
Milo studied him for a long moment, something searching and considerably older than his years in the look. "Are you sure," he asked quietly.
"No," Ren admitted, honest despite the fear still coiled tight in his chest. "But I’m tired of running from things I should probably just face instead. And I don’t think hiding from them is going to work much longer anyway, not now that they’ve already found this hotel."
Finn’s grip on his brother’s sleeve loosened slightly, some of his own fear easing at the calm, steady certainty in Ren’s voice, even if he didn’t fully understand every detail of what was actually happening. "Will you come back," he asked, small and uncertain.
"Always," Ren said, crouching down to meet the boy’s eyes one final time before turning toward the door. "I promise you that. Whatever happens, I’m not leaving either of you behind."
He crossed the suite slowly, each step feeling heavier than the last, and paused at the door for a long moment, one hand pressed flat against the cool surface, gathering whatever composure he had left before finally, deliberately, reaching for the handle.
He opened the door, and the sight that greeted him hit harder than he’d braced for.
Yegard stood closest, and the moment his eyes found Ren, something raw and desperate flickered across his usually composed features, relief and disbelief and something considerably more complicated all crashing together at once. Beside him, Reven’s pale eyes swept over Ren’s changed appearance with sharp, searching intensity, cataloguing every difference, the white hair, the blue eyes, the sleek, unfamiliar clothes, and something in his expression shifted from tense anticipation into something far more devastating, quiet and stunned and unmistakably relieved all at once. Alouis stood slightly behind them both, and the moment she saw him, her carefully maintained composure cracked entirely, a small, broken sound escaping her before she could stop it.
"Rafayal," Yegard said, voice rough with an emotion Ren had rarely heard from him, taking an involuntary step forward before catching himself.
"It’s Evan, actually," Ren said, and the words came out steadier than he expected, though something in his chest ached fiercely at the sight of all three of them standing there, real and present after weeks of careful, deliberate distance. "At least, that’s who I’ve been for the last several weeks."
"Evan," Reven repeated, something almost gentle in the way he tested the unfamiliar name, pale eyes never once leaving Ren’s face like he was afraid looking away might make the whole moment dissolve entirely. "The hair suits you. Though I’ll admit, I preferred the red."
"You would," Ren said, something involuntary and fond slipping into his own voice despite everything, the old, familiar rhythm between them resurfacing almost instantly despite weeks of separation.
Alouis moved first, crossing the remaining distance and pulling Ren into a fierce, immediate hug before he could brace himself for it, and Ren felt something in his chest crack open entirely at the raw, genuine relief radiating off her. "You absolute idiot," she said, voice thick with emotion, "do you have any idea what you put us through? Father threatened all of us, Reven and Yegard have barely slept in weeks searching for you, I have spent every single day since you disappeared terrified you’d been hurt, or worse—"
"I’m sorry," Ren said, and meant it, guilt settling in heavy alongside the overwhelming relief of finally being found by people who, despite everything, clearly still cared enough to cross an entire sector looking for him. "I didn’t think, I just needed to get away, and I didn’t consider how much that would actually cost everyone else."
Alouis pulled back finally, studying his face with careful, searching attention, something complicated passing behind her expression. "You look happy," she said finally, something almost surprised in the observation. "Genuinely happy. I haven’t seen that expression on your face in longer than I can remember."
Ren opened his mouth to respond, and that was the exact moment the door behind him creaked open further, Milo’s cautious voice cutting through the tense, emotional reunion with careful, protective concern. "Elder brother? Are you okay?"
Every head turned toward the sound, and Ren watched, with a fresh wave of complicated emotion, as Yegard, Reven, and Alouis all took in the sight of Milo standing protectively in the doorway, Finn peeking out from behind him with wide, cautious eyes, both boys clearly ready to intervene the moment they sensed any actual threat to the man they’d apparently already claimed as family.
"Elder brother," Reven repeated slowly, something considering and faintly amused cutting through his earlier intensity as he studied the two children now flanking Ren protectively. "That’s new."
"This is Milo, and this is Finn," Ren said, stepping slightly to include both boys in the conversation, some protective instinct of his own rising fast at the sight of three powerful, unfamiliar adults suddenly crowding into a doorway his two young charges had every reason to view with caution. "They’re mine. I found them, and I’m not leaving them behind, whatever happens next with any of you."
Yegard’s expression shifted at that, something considering and genuinely surprised passing behind his usual composure as he studied the two boys carefully. "You’ve been taking care of children," he said slowly, like the information required real effort to properly absorb. "While hiding from an entire Empire’s search."
"Apparently that’s just who I am now," Ren said, something dry and slightly defensive entering his voice despite the underlying vulnerability of the moment. "I couldn’t just leave them in an alley being hunted by monsters. I had the resources to help, so I did."
Reven’s expression softened further at that, something warm and unmistakably fond breaking through the careful composure he’d maintained since the door first opened. "Of course you did," he said quietly, more to himself than to anyone else in the conversation. "Of course that’s exactly what you’d do, even in hiding, even trying to build an entirely new life for yourself away from all of us."
"We should probably talk properly," Alouis said, glancing carefully between the two boys and the three adults, clearly aware of the delicate balance the conversation currently required. "Somewhere the children can be comfortable, and where we can actually discuss what happens next without doing it in a hotel corridor."
Ren hesitated, glancing back at Milo and Finn, both of them still watching the unfolding scene with careful, wary attention, clearly uncertain whether these three strangers represented safety or danger despite Ren’s own apparent, complicated relief at seeing them.
"Can we trust them," Milo asked quietly, directing the question straight at Ren without any pretense of politeness toward the three adults currently standing in the doorway.
Ren considered the question seriously, weighing every complicated, tangled feeling he still carried toward each of them, the anger and hurt and lingering affection all tangled together in ways he hadn’t fully sorted through even now. "Yes," he said finally, with more certainty than he expected to actually feel. "Whatever else is complicated between us, I trust that none of them would ever intentionally hurt either of you. And I trust that they came all this way because they actually care what happens to me, even after everything I did to make that considerably harder than it needed to be."
Milo studied the three adults a moment longer, some careful, calculating assessment passing behind his young eyes, and finally, slowly, nodded, stepping back from the doorway to allow proper entry into the suite.
"Okay," he said. "But if any of them make you sad, I’m allowed to say something about it."
A startled, genuine laugh escaped Reven at that, sharp and unguarded in a way Ren hadn’t heard from him in weeks. "I like him already," Reven said, something openly delighted cutting through his earlier intensity. "He’s got excellent instincts."
Ren felt something loosen in his chest at the small, unexpected moment of levity, the crushing tension of the last several minutes easing, just slightly, into something more manageable. "Come in, then," he said, stepping back to allow all three of them entry, bracing himself for whatever difficult, complicated conversation was about to unfold. "But I’m warning all of you now, I’m not simply agreeing to go back to how things were before. Whatever happens next, it happens on terms that actually include me having an actual say in the outcome this time."
Yegard met his gaze steadily as he crossed the threshold, something fierce and determined settling behind his usual composure. "That’s fair," he said quietly. "More than fair, considering everything."
They filed into the suite together, the tension still thick but no longer purely adversarial, and Ren felt, despite everything still uncertain about what came next, a small, cautious thread of hope settling in alongside the exhaustion. Whatever this conversation turned into, whatever demands or ultimatums or complicated declarations waited on the other side of it, at least, finally, he wasn’t facing any of it alone anymore.
