Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Are You Done

The five days passed in a blur of intensified training, Ren’s control sharpening steadily with every session until the containment thresholds Reven pushed him toward no longer felt like impossible reaches but achievable, repeatable exercises. He kept the escape plan carefully tucked away beneath the surface of his composure, mapping routes off the outpost in stolen moments between sessions, quietly gathering what few resources he’d need for a clean, untraceable departure, all while maintaining the same steady, focused presence Reven had come to expect from him over the last several days.

The last day arrived with none of the ceremony Ren had half expected it to carry, just an ordinary morning like any other, the training chamber’s familiar hum greeting him the same way it had every day before. He moved through the session with careful, deliberate normalcy, summoning containment, holding it steady, releasing it clean, giving no outward indication that this would be the final time he stood in this particular room.

’Just get through today,’ he told himself, watching Reven adjust the diagnostic panel with the same unhurried focus he brought to everything. ’Get through today, and tonight, once everyone’s asleep, once the outpost settles into its quietest hours, I disappear. Clean. Simple. No goodbyes, no complications, no chance for either of them to talk me into staying somewhere I never actually meant to remain.’

The session wound down as it usually did, Reven signaling the end with a small nod once Ren’s final containment attempt had held steady for the full required duration, and Ren allowed himself a small, private exhale of relief, one final hurdle cleared before the actual escape could begin later that night.

He didn’t expect what happened next. Reven crossed the remaining distance between them faster than Ren registered, one hand closing firm around his waist, pulling him in close enough that Ren’s palm landed flat against his chest on pure reflex, the beginning of an instinctive push already forming before he’d even fully processed what was happening. And then Reven’s mouth was on his, deep and certain and nothing like the staged, careful near-kiss from the training yard days ago, this one real, deliberate, no audience to perform for, no strategic calculation dressing it up as anything other than exactly what it was.

Ren’s first instinct was to push back, hand curling instinctively against Reven’s chest, but the thought arrived and dissolved almost simultaneously, replaced by something quieter and considerably more complicated. ’This is the last time,’ he thought, the realization settling in even as Reven’s hand tightened at his waist, even as the kiss deepened further, unhurried and thorough in a way that made Ren’s pulse stutter despite everything else currently weighing on him. ’Tonight I’m gone. Whatever this is, whatever it means, it doesn’t matter anymore, because by morning I won’t be here for it to matter to.’ The thought should have made pulling away easier. Instead, unexpectedly, it made him let go of the instinct entirely, his hand curling into the fabric of Reven’s shirt instead of pushing against it, allowing himself, just this once, just for the length of this single, stolen moment, to actually feel whatever this was without the weight of consequence attached to it.

Reven kissed him like he had all the time in the world, like five days of careful, deliberate patience had finally reached its breaking point and he intended to make the most of it now that restraint no longer felt necessary, one hand sliding from Ren’s waist to cradle the back of his neck, fingers threading gently into his hair the same way they had during that very first staged performance, except this time there was nothing performative about it at all. Ren felt something in his chest ache with a complicated mixture of longing and guilt, the knowledge of his own imminent departure sitting heavy and unspoken beneath every second of contact, a secret Reven had no idea he was currently kissing goodbye without ever being told that’s what this actually was.

When Reven finally pulled back, slow and unhurried, his expression held something unguarded Ren hadn’t seen from him before, all the usual sharp calculation and possessive confidence stripped away, replaced by something quieter, more genuine, more vulnerable than Ren had expected him capable of showing at all.

"Are you done," Ren said, and immediately hated how flat it came out, how deliberately unaffected he’d forced his voice to sound despite everything still racing beneath the surface, because letting Reven see how much that kiss had actually shaken him felt like handing over a piece of leverage he couldn’t afford to give away, not tonight, not when he was hours away from disappearing without a word.

Something flickered across Reven’s face at the tone, surprise first, then something more considering, his hand still resting against the back of Ren’s neck, thumb tracing an absent, gentle line there. "That’s your reaction," he said slowly, something wry threading through the words despite the vulnerability still lingering underneath them. "After that."

"What did you expect," Ren said, forcing himself to step back, putting a careful distance between them despite every instinct screaming at him to close it right back up again. "A declaration? We’ve known each other for two weeks. You’ve pinned me to walls, staged fake kisses for an audience, and now apparently decided a real one was overdue. I don’t exactly have a rehearsed response prepared for this."

"I wasn’t looking for a rehearsed response," Reven said, something quieter entering his voice, more careful now. "I was looking for an honest one."

Ren felt the words land somewhere uncomfortable, guilt twisting sharper in his chest at the genuine sincerity underlying them, especially given everything he currently wasn’t telling him. ’An honest response,’ he thought, the irony of it settling in heavy and bitter. ’The most honest thing I could tell you right now is that I’m leaving tonight and I never planned on telling you at all. That’s the honest response you’re asking for, and it’s exactly the one I can’t afford to give you.’

"I don’t know what you want me to say," Ren said instead, keeping his voice as steady as he could manage. "That it meant something? Fine. It meant something. I’m not going to pretend it didn’t. But that doesn’t automatically mean I know what to do with it, especially with everything else currently happening around me."

Something in Reven’s expression eased slightly at the admission, though the careful wariness didn’t fully disappear. "I don’t need you to have it figured out," he said. "I’ve told you already, I can be patient. I simply wanted you to know, clearly, without any performance dressing it up as something else, that this wasn’t strategy. Whatever’s happening between us, it stopped being a game for me a while ago."

Ren’s chest tightened further at that, the weight of his own secret pressing harder against his ribs with every passing second of the conversation. ’I have to leave tonight,’ he reminded himself, forcing the thought to stay solid despite how badly the rest of him wanted to lean back into the moment instead of holding himself carefully apart from it. ’Whatever this is, whatever he’s offering, I can’t let it change the plan. Staying here means risking Imperial Command, risking my father, risking becoming exactly the kind of asset the Empire wants to claim and study. I can’t let one kiss undo weeks of careful planning, no matter how much it apparently meant to both of us.’

"I need to go," Ren said finally, the words coming out rougher than he intended, guilt and longing and fear all tangled together beneath them. "I have things to take care of before tonight."

Reven studied him for a long moment, something searching in his expression that made Ren distinctly uneasy, like he suspected there was more beneath the abrupt shift than Ren was willing to admit. "Alright," he said finally, though the reluctance in his voice was unmistakable. "Tomorrow, then. We’ll finish this conversation properly, once you’ve had time to think it through."

"Tomorrow," Ren echoed, the word tasting like a lie even as it left his mouth, because there wasn’t going to be a tomorrow for this conversation, not here, not with Reven, not with any of the tangled, complicated threads he was about to leave unresolved behind him.

He left the training chamber with his chest aching and his resolve wavering more than he wanted to admit, the taste of that kiss still lingering, the memory of Reven’s unguarded expression sitting uncomfortably alongside the cold, practical calculations of his escape plan. ’This is exactly why I need to leave tonight,’ he told himself, walking fast through the corridors, putting physical distance between himself and the training wing before he could talk himself into reconsidering anything at all. ’Because if I stay even one more day, if I let myself have even one more conversation like that, I’m not sure I’ll actually be able to leave at all. And staying isn’t safe. Staying was never the plan. I can’t let two weeks of complicated feelings undo everything I’ve been trying to protect since the very first night I woke up in this body.’

He made it back to his quarters and sat down heavily on the edge of his bunk, pressing the back of his hand briefly against his own mouth, the ghost of the kiss still lingering there, stubborn and unwelcome given everything he was about to do. ’Tonight,’ he reminded himself, forcing the resolve back into place despite how much harder it had gotten to hold onto in the last hour. ’Tonight, I disappear. Whatever this was, whatever it might have become, it doesn’t get to be the reason I stay somewhere the entire Empire is apparently circling like vultures waiting for the right moment to claim me.’ He closed his eyes, the weight of the coming departure settling in heavier than ever now, and let himself feel, just for a moment, the full cost of the choice he was about to make before pushing it firmly aside in favor of the practical work still waiting to be done before nightfall.
