Chapter 422:Comprehension.
Chapter 422: 422:Comprehension.
Atheline disappeared before the attack got to him. The place he’d occupied became a forest of frozen spikes.
He reappeared above the creature, three arrows descending.
The wolf created another barrier. He changed their trajectory using Wind before the impact; two curved around while one went beneath.
The beast jumped backward.
Water gathered around Atheline’s hand. He redirected melting snow from the mountainside, transforming it into several streams that wrapped around the wolf’s legs.
The creature froze them.
His eyes widened slightly as the wolf shattered the restraints, then attacked. The battle lasted nearly two hours although he had overwhelming advantage.
Killing it wasn’t why he’d remained in the Forbidden Forest.
So he suppressed himself and watched the way it fought. Beast tend to have a more natural and instinctual use of their powers than most.
The wolf used Ice differently from him. Atheline had always treated Ice as another form of Water. Technically, that wasn’t entirely wrong; he could create water and freeze it, lower temperatures, construct weapons, create walls and freeze opponents.
But something about the creature’s Ice Aether felt fundamentally different. It didn’t simply make things cold, it stopped them.
He noticed it when the wolf froze one of his Water techniques. The water had been moving, then it wasn’t.
That sounded obvious, yet he couldn’t stop thinking about it. He created another stream and the wolf froze it.
Movement became stillness.
Atheline’s eyes narrowed. He fired another arrow; the creature created an ice wall. The arrow embedded itself inside.
He activated the Wind Aether surrounding it but nothing happened. The arrow remained frozen.
He landed near it and the wolf took the opportunity to charge. He raised his sword, ice forming along the blade.
The weapons collided.
A shockwave sent snow exploding outward.
Atheline looked into the beast’s eyes.
"Stillness."
The wolf pushed harder. He disappeared and reappeared behind it. Instead of attacking, he looked toward the frozen river below the mountain.
Water flowed beneath the surface while ice remained above. One moved and one didn’t.
He suddenly remembered something else. The ancient bodies in Doom Cave. There was cold which helped in the preservation.
Ice didn’t merely destroy through cold , it preserved by preventing change, slowed movement and restricted transformation. It held something in a particular state.
"Stillness and preservation."
The wolf attacked again.
Atheline raised one hand, ice Aether gathering. The beast’s paw descended. He touched it and dverything stopped. Frost exploded outward and the wolf froze. It only lasted for a fraction of a second but that fraction was enough.
His eyes widened.
He felt it, the same strange sensation he’d experienced with Wind and Water; a truth, tiny and incomplete but real.
He immediately jumped away as the ice shattered.
The wolf roared.
Atheline laughed.
"Three."
The creature clearly didn’t share his excitement. It charged directly at him again. This time Atheline ended the battle with one arrow.
Ice gathered around the arrowhead, wind carried it, and water adapted around the beast’s defensive barrier. The arrow penetrated it.
He stood over it afterward and bowed his head briefly in respect before collecting the core.
He remained in the mountains for another three weeks with ice becoming his entire focus.
He froze waterfalls, created glaciers across valleys, sat inside snowstorms without using Aether to protect himself and observed how cold slowed everything around it.
He noticed how plants entered dormancy, water stopped flowing, food remained preserved and bodies decayed more slowly.
Even Aether behaved differently when exposed to sufficiently concentrated Ice.
Atheline began understanding that Stillness wasn’t simply stopping physical movement.
It could mean resisting change, holding something as it was or preserving a state against outside influence.
The concept was enormous, far larger than he could currently understand. So he didn’t try; surface comprehension was enough.
By the time Atheline left the mountains, three months had passed since he’d entered the Forbidden Forest.
He contacted Lilith that evening. The communication crystal activated and she appeared.
Her first words were immediate.
"Your hair is longer."
Hw touched it.
"That’s what you noticed?"
"Yes."
"I’ve comprehended three elemental Laws."
"I noticed the hair first."
He blankly stared at her. She smiled.
"Which one?"
"Ice."
Her amusement disappeared.
"Show me."
He raised one hand and a tiny droplet of water formed above his palm.
He froze it.
"Impressive."
"Wait."
Atheline ignored the sarcasm. He allowed the ice to fall but before it could reach the ground, he extended one finger. The piece stopped for the briefest instant, even the tiny vibrations within it seemed to cease.
Lilith’s expression changed.
Then the effect ended and the ice fell.
Atheline caught it.
"Stillness."
She nodded slowly.
"And?"
"Preservation."
"Two concepts."
"Surface level."
He sat beside his fire.
"I can feel much more behind them, but I’m deliberately not going deeper."
"Good."
He raised an eyebrow.
"You expected me to disagree?"
"I expected you to become obsessed and spend the next three years freezing rocks."
"I considered it."
"I know."
Atheline smiled.
"How’s the kingdom?"
That changed the conversation. He learnt that klaith remained missing with no confirmed sighting. Several people had also been questioned. His residence and office had produced strange gaps in records but nothing that explained where he’d gone.
More importantly, corruption incidents were gradually increasing; that was almost worse since every continent was reporting them now.
His smile disappeared.
"Any major attacks?"
"Nothing we can’t handle."
"Yet."
Lilith looked at him.
"Yet."
They spoke for nearly an hour. When the communication ended, ge remained beside the fire staring into the flames.
He’d intended to sleep; instead, something caught his attention.
The fire moved.
Atheline stared at it in an almost daze like state. He’d seen fire countless times , used it countless times, burned enemies, created explosions, enhanced arrows, and produced heat.
But after Wind, Water and Ice, he’d begun looking at every element differently.
Fire never remained still, even when contained, it moved constantly as it consumed. Wood became ash, and aether became heat which meant matter changed the moment it touched fire.
Atheline leaned closer.
"Change."
The flame flickered.
His eyes narrowed.
"No."
That was too simple. Everything changed; water changed, wind changed and life changed.
What made Fire different?
Atheline picked up a branch and placed it inside the flames. The bark blackened, then burned. The branch couldn’t return to what it had been.
Ge watched until only ash remained.
"Transformation."
Ut was closer to what he had anticipated. Fire consumed one thing and created another state.
Wood became ash.
Cold became heat.
Darkness became light.
Stored energy became motion.
Fire didn’t preserve, it did almost the opposite of Ice. While ie resisted change, fire forced it.
Atheline smiled slowly.
"Found you."
The flame surged, then exploded in his face. He fell backward from the sudden heat. Several seconds passed before he sat up.
His eyebrows were intact, barely.
"Surface comprehension," he muttered. "Very surface."
The fourth month began with Fire.
Unlike Wind and Water, Atheline didn’t remain in one location. He sought environments where fire behaved differently.
Dry grasslands near the western interior, volcanic vents hidden beneath the mountains, and forests thick with dead wood.
He created flames beneath rainfall, maintained them underwater using Aether, also studied ordinary fire and magical fire.
Then he fought with it, again and again.
Time accelerated.
Three months and twelve days... Three months and twenty days... Three months and twenty-eight.
Atheline fought a giant horned reptile whose scales absorbed heat. He fought a flock of corrupted birds. He fought three SSS beasts simultaneously after accidentally entering their shared territory.
He destroyed a corrupted tree that had grown roots through an entire valley. He nearly burned his temporary camp down twice.
The second incident was entirely his fault.
Through everything, Fire taught him the same lesson. There was mainly change, consumption, and transformation.
But there was another side; creation. A burned forest eventually produced fertile ground. Heat could destroy but also sustain life. Fire could cook food, forge metal, provide warmth and transform ore into weapons.
Atheline realized the Law wasn’t simply destruction. That was merely the easiest expression of it.
By the end of the fourth month, he could place his hand against a tree and ignite only a single dead leaf without burning anything around it.
That impressed him more than creating an enormous inferno. Control had become understanding.
One evening, he tested all four.
Wind surrounded him.
Freedom.
Water circled his other arm.
Adaptation.
Ice formed beneath his feet.
Stillness.
Fire appeared above him.
Transformation.
Four elements, meaning four beginnings. His Peak Mystic core trembled. He immediately dismissed everything, his expression becoming serious.
That had happened before.
Each new comprehension placed pressure on his core encouraging it into an expansion. As though his core wanted to become something else but lacked the final requirement.
Atheline placed a hand against his chest.
The mysterious presence from the Unaspected Ruin reacted as well, still hidden and incomprehensible, but definitely awake.
"Not yet."
Atheline had no idea whether he was talking to his core or whatever lived beside it.
