Chapter 420: 420:Laws.
Two weeks passed, then three.
His camp moved repeatedly as he traveled deeper. He fought dozens of creatures along the way.
A giant serpent capable of manipulating earth. A colony of poisonous insects that forced him to abandon an entire valley. A massive bear with skin harder than metal.
Several corrupted creatures that had wandered unusually deep into the forest.
Those concerned him.
The corruption was spreading farther than previous reports suggested. Atheline marked every location and sent them back to Lilith but he didn’t leave, not yet.
By the twenty-fourth day, he returned to Wind and this time, he didn’t summon it.
Atheline stood on the edge of an enormous cliff overlooking the forest. He closed his eyes and wind touched his face.
He didn’t manipulate it, fill it with Aether or command it. He simply felt it’s movement.
That was his first thought.
Wind existed because something moved. When pressure changed, air traveled. Something sought equilibrium, yet that explanation felt incomplete.
Atheline remained there for hours. The wind changed repeatedly as it moved from side to side. It started small, then it became stronger.
It didn’t maintain one form, remain in one place, or care about boundaries unless something possessed enough force to stop it.
Atheline remembered Lilith’s explanation.
A Law was a truth, not a technique.
"What is your truth?"
The wind offered no answer.
He smiled faintly.
"Apparently Laws enjoy being difficult."
He remained seated; night came, then morning. He didn’t move even once.
By afternoon, something finally changed. He stopped thinking about Wind as an element, stopped thinking about spells and stopped thinking about combat.
Wind moved because movement was its nature, but there was something deeper within that movement.
Freedom.
Atheline opened his eyes.
The forest stretched endlessly beneath him. A leaf detached from a nearby tree and the wind caught it.
He watched it rise.
It moved wherever the currents carried it, yet within that apparent randomness existed countless forces interacting simultaneously.
Freedom didn’t mean absence of rules, it meant movement within them.
He raised his hand but didn’t summon Wind Aether. The leaf changed direction regardless.
His eyes widened as he watched it drift toward him, then stopped above his palm.
Atheline stared.
There was almost no Aether expenditure. He hadn’t forced the wind to move; he had simply... Asked. Something touched his consciousness.
A tiny and fragile understanding, barely enough to grasp but real.
Wind represented movement.
Wind represented freedom.
Wind could be redirected, compressed and constrained, but its nature was always to move.
He smiled.
"So that’s it."
The wind around the cliff suddenly surged. His hair and clothing whipped violently while leaves rose throughout the surrounding forest.
Atheline laughed.
He finally understood why Lilith had struggled to explain it.
A Law couldn’t truly be taught.
Someone could point toward the answer, but comprehension had to belong to the person discovering it. He stood, extended one hand, and wind gathered.
This time it felt different. The quantity wasn’t dramatically larger or the Aether wasn’t suddenly ten times stronger. Instead, the wind responded more naturally.
He stepped forward and off the cliff.
He fell.
But then he stopped. There was no violent burst of Wind Aether or platform beneath his feet; the wind simply carried him.
Atheline looked downward.
Hundreds of meters separated him from the forest floor.
"Interesting."
He leaned forward. The world blurred as he disappeared. A sonic explosion erupted behind him. He reappeared nearly a kilometer away and immediately lost control.
"Oh..."
He crashed through the upper branches of a tree. Several seconds later, Atheline hung upside down from vines.
He stared at the ground.
"Surface comprehension." A branch cracked. "Definitely surface comprehension."
He fell.
The following month became considerably more productive. He didn’t attempt to deepen Wind immediately. He knew instinctively that what he’d touched was only the outermost layer.
Freedom and Movement were concepts within Wind, but they weren’t everything. There were currents, pressure, vacuum, change and sound.
Perhaps dozens of truths hidden inside the same element. Trying to comprehend everything now would consume years.
He didn’t have years to learn everything, so he stabilized what he’d learned.
His arrows changed first.
Atheline stopped forcing Wind Aether around them so aggressively; instead he allowed arrows to move with existing currents, adding tiny adjustments at critical moments.
The result was absurd; his range increased, accuracy improved, aether consumption decreased, and more importantly, arrows became difficult to predict.
They didn’t always travel in straight lines anymore. They followed paths that seemed natural to the air itself. His movement changed too. Atheline stopped treating wind as something pushing him but moved with it.
The distinction sounded meaningless until experienced. His speed increased significantly.
Then came Water.
Atheline found a river.
He spent three days beside it. On the fourth day, he admitted he had absolutely no idea what he was doing again. Fortunately, the forest provided another teacher.
Rain.
It began without warning. He sat beneath a tree and watched the river rise as water fell against stone, against leaves, and against earth.
It flowed around everything. Where wind sought movement, water accepted shape.
He scooped some into his palm; it conformed immediately. He closed his fingers and the water escaped through the gaps.
He froze it, and that changed the element entirely.
Atheline frowned.
"No. Ice later."
He released it.
For the next several weeks, Water became his focus. Time moved faster.
Thirty-seven days.
Forty-two.
Forty-nine.
He fought, meditated and moved deeper. He returned whenever corrupted creatures appeared and destroyed them before continuing.
His clothes became damaged enough that he eventually replaced them with spares.
His hair grew.
His beard attempted to follow until Atheline decided there were limits to how wild he intended to look when he eventually returned to Lilith.
During the seventh week, he fought something powerful enough to force him to use everything he’d learned.
A gigantic amphibious beast erupted from a lake.
Peak SSS.
Water surrounded its body.
He fired his arrow. The creature redirected his Water Arrow immediately. He switched to lightning and the lake exploded with electricity.
