Chapter 420: Chapter 420: Someone Here Is About to Die of Anxiety

"Josephine, Josephine, calm down. Don’t make yourself sick over this."

"Calm down? How am I supposed to calm down?" Mrs. Donovan lay on the soft sofa, one hand clutching her chest. Her face was pale, and her eyes were filled with tears, a truly pitiable sight.

Mr. Donovan sat beside her, like an ant on a hot pan. He was furious about what had happened to his youngest daughter, but he was also busy rubbing his wife’s back to soothe her, afraid she would get so angry she’d make herself sick.

Behind them, the vast living room was a complete mess, littered with things Mrs. Donovan had smashed in a fit of rage after learning the whole story.

"I should have known. I should have realized it sooner. Back when Serena first came home, I took her out shopping and we ran into Eloise. She mentioned that if things had followed the original path, she would have been abused by Holly Wagner’s parents..."

Mrs. Donovan couldn’t bring herself to say the final word. Her eyes reddened instantly. "But at the time, we had to focus on the Lynch Family’s situation. I had our eldest son look into those two damn old monsters, but he found out they had died two years prior. Dead as doornails!"

Once someone’s dead, it’s over. No matter how furious Mrs. Donovan was, she had no one to vent her rage on. She could only lament that those two had gotten off too easy with their deaths, leaving her with no way to release her pent-up fury.

Now, she was being told that in the established plotline, her daughter was not only abused to the point of a premature death but also couldn’t find peace even after she was gone. Those two old monsters had sold her birth-date characters for a ghost marriage. The thought made Mrs. Donovan’s chest ache with fury.

Beside them, Justin Donovan’s expression was just as grim. He wanted to take his anger out on someone but had no idea who to target.

Eloise Donovan had anticipated this reaction and quickly tried to console them. "Mom, Dad, Big Bro, don’t get so worked up. Serena would be heartbroken if you made yourselves sick. Second Bro and I have already talked it over. When Serena isn’t home, we’ll take a trip to Holly Wagner’s hometown and dig up those two old monsters’ graves."

Eloise’s words had an immediate effect. The others were so stunned they forgot to keep being angry.

"Elo... Eloise, are you serious?"

"Of course, I’m serious. Don’t you think it’s what they deserve?"

Mrs. Donovan’s face instantly darkened. "Eloise is right. It’s exactly what they deserve. They denied my daughter... peace in the afterlife, so they shouldn’t expect to rest easy either. I’ll have someone dig up their graves and let their corpses rot in the open."

As for whether this was immoral, or if it was wrongly accusing them of something that hadn’t happened?

Mrs. Donovan felt no guilt whatsoever. Considering what that old monster’s daughter did to her own two daughters, and the abuse and suffering their Serena endured in that house for the first few years of her life, just digging up their graves was nothing. She wanted to flog their corpses!

"Mom and Eloise are right. We shouldn’t let them off so easily. But right now, the most important thing is Serena..."

Justin’s reminder brought Mr. and Mrs. Donovan back to their senses. This was what led them to contact Hector Donovan.

Donovan Family Private Gossip Group (Our Treasure Serena Excluded Edition)

Family Head #2: You there? @Two Times Two, how is Serena right now? Has she been affected by what happened today?

Two Times Two: She seems fine for now, don’t worry. I’ve already separated her from that damned jinx Caspian Rhodes. We can’t let his bad luck affect our Serena. What a downer!

Family Head #1: Well done! That’s exactly what you should do. The nerve of him, daring to covet our precious pearl. If he ever tries to make a move on Serena again, I’ll break his legs!

Family Head #2: Listen to your father.

After this incident, even Mrs. Donovan—the only one in the family who held no prejudice against Caspian Rhodes and operated on the principle of "as long as our treasure is happy, anyone is fine"—immediately switched sides. She kicked Caspian, whom she had previously found quite agreeable and considered a promising candidate, off the list of potential suitors.

Meanwhile, a certain someone who had also just gotten off a plane and was about to head to his company to work overtime: ACHOO!

Two Times Two: Understood. [OK.jpg]

Two Times Two: But what’s your plan for this whole situation?

Family Head #2: We’ve already discussed it with Eloise. While you kids are away for the next few days, we’re going to go dig up the graves of those two old geezers from the Wagner family!

Two Times Two: ...

Two Times Two: Fine, but that’s not what I was asking about.

Family Head #1: Then what do you want to ask?

Two Times Two: Before, it was always our family members who were the cannon fodder in other people’s stories. It was only because of Serena’s warnings that we were able to avoid those calamities and live to this day. This time, the one who needs to survive a trial is Serena. I have a feeling it’s not going to be that simple.

Hector Donovan’s words silenced the rest of the Donovan family for a long moment. Weren’t his worries the same as everyone else’s?

Just think about it. If not for Arabella Donovan’s warnings, how many traps would their cannon-fodder family have fallen into? They would have stepped into one after another. It was impossible to guard against, as if fate was bent on pushing them to their deaths.

Arabella’s situation was even more tragic than theirs. She was essentially strangled in the cradle before she even had a chance to grow up.

It sounded like the current situation was a world away from that, having completely deviated from the original path.

But who could guarantee that the damned Providence wouldn’t suddenly throw a fit, create some sort of accident, and drag the plotline back to where it was?

Even if the possibility was minuscule, they couldn’t afford to bear the consequences of such an accident!

Family Head #1: So, what exactly are you trying to ask?

Two Times Two: Have you guys considered... telling her that we can hear her thoughts?

Hector Donovan’s question once again stunned everyone into silence, but this time, the silence didn’t last long.

Family Head #2: We have. Your father and I thought about telling Serena a long time ago, but we just never found the right opportunity.

Family Head #1: Perhaps this is the perfect opportunity.

Misty Dawn: I just wonder if Serena will be angry with us when she finds out the truth.

This was a worry they all shared. It was precisely this concern that had made them put it off for so long.

Take Mr. and Mrs. Donovan, for example. When they last heard Arabella mention how, in the original story, Melody Lynch had fallen for Howard Gallagher’s trap because her family hid the truth from her, they were already wavering. However, neither of them had the courage to be the first to speak up. The longer they delayed, the harder it became to say anything, and because they couldn’t bring themselves to speak, they just kept putting it off, creating a vicious cycle.

The atmosphere in the group chat grew heavy because of this topic. At the critical moment, it was Aurora Donovan—far away in Brynn, taking a short break from the research lab after finally making significant progress and trying to clear her head—who broke the silence.

Scattered Like a Plate of Sand: ?

Scattered Like a Plate of Sand: What’s going on? What gossip did you guys get into without me again? And what does this have to do with Serena and that kid from the Rhodes Family?

Scattered Like a Plate of Sand: You’re actually planning to tell Serena the truth? What the hell happened? Can someone come out and explain it to me? Somebody here is dying of suspense!!! [TearingMyHairOut.jpg]

The Donovan Family: "..." ’Sometimes, we really don’t want to admit this person is one of us!’
