I Read Their Tragic Fates, and My Family Reads My Mind?
Chapter 371: Is She a Pig?
Chapter 371: Chapter 371: Is She a Pig?
Samuel Chamberlain. The same poor sap who had caused a scene at Arabella Donovan’s birthday party and later had to drag his parents into it, forcing them to dig into their savings to make amends.
He was surprised for a moment when he answered the phone. "Well, well, to what do I owe the pleasure? Mr. Reese is calling me personally. I’m truly flattered!"
How could Mason Reese not hear the sarcasm in his voice? He felt a flash of embarrassment but braced himself and continued, "I’m sorry. I was too harsh before. I hope you can be the bigger person and not hold it against me."
"...That’s more like it." After all, they had grown up together. Samuel Chamberlain couldn’t truly bring himself to cut off all contact for good.
"So, spill it. You didn’t call me at this hour just to apologize, did you?"
"What you said before, about Cassandra Lynch... was all of it true?"
Samuel Chamberlain shot up in bed like a bolt of lightning, the perfect embodiment of the phrase, ’You have my full attention!’
"So you... you’ve finally seen the light? Realized that woman is nothing but a two-faced, backstabbing snake?"
Mason Reese’s eyes hardened. "I’ve been meaning to ask you, why did your attitude toward her change so suddenly? Did you... find something out?"
Mason probably shouldn’t have brought that up. The moment he did, Samuel’s temper flared again.
"You have the nerve to ask? I tried to tell you before, but I barely got a word out before you chewed my head off. You said if I uttered one more bad word about that woman, we were done as friends. Heh. And now you come crawling back to ask me? You want to be friends again just like that? Do you think I’m that much of a pushover?"
"I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I was a poor judge of character and unfairly questioned your intentions. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me this once."
Mason’s sudden submissiveness gave Samuel goosebumps.
"What happened? I don’t believe for a second you just came to your senses on your own. Something must have happened that I don’t know about."
"Something did happen."
Mason briefly summarized the key points of what had happened with Cassandra Lynch. When he finished, Samuel was stunned.
"You’re telling me she went looking for that Miss Donovan? The one the family just took back? HAHAHAHA... Oh my god, is she an idiot? Of all the people to pick a fight with, she chose *her*? Does she have a death wish or something?"
Mason raised an eyebrow, a look of surprise on his face. "From the sound of it, you seem to know this Miss Donovan."
"Know her? That’s an understatement!" Samuel couldn’t help but shudder as he recalled being argued into stunned silence by Arabella Donovan at the Donovan Family’s estate.
"Even though this Miss Donovan was only recently brought back to the Donovan Family—and I heard she was living a quiet, austere life in some remote mountain village before that—she’s seriously uncanny."
"Uncanny in what way?"
"I think she can read minds!" He remembered how the moment he met Arabella Donovan’s gaze, all his little schemes and hidden thoughts felt completely exposed.
’Every time I thought of something, before I even had a chance to say it, she already had a rebuttal ready and waiting for me!’
"Besides, you weren’t there that night, so you didn’t see it. A lot of their relatives were lining up to greet her and ask her to tell their fortunes."
"Tell their fortunes?"
"You don’t know? That Miss Donovan is from the Sacred Sect. She grew up in a Sacred Temple. If she hadn’t come down from the mountain to gain worldly experience, the Donovan Family probably would have never even found her."
"Then what she said... it must all be true."
"I don’t know the specifics of what she said, but judging from the reactions of the people who asked for a reading that night, she’s definitely the real deal."
"She said that when Cassandra Lynch was eight and a half, she staged a rescue to win someone’s favor. But because that person’s sister was also there, things went wrong. The sister was left with a lifelong disability. And Cassandra, the real culprit, pushed all the blame onto the person who actually saved the siblings and stole the credit for the rescue."
"Fuck, that bitch. I knew she was vicious, but I didn’t think she was *this* venomous. To do something so malicious! And she was only eight! When I was eight, I was busy chasing dogs and climbing on roofs, and then getting a beating from my parents. And she was already that manipulative?"
After his rant, Samuel realized the story sounded awfully familiar. He thought about it carefully...
"Holy shit. Don’t tell me that was..."
Mason’s face was cold as he said grimly, "It was most likely about me and Sandy."
"Damn it, I’m seeing red! So she’s the one who ruined Sandy’s eyes! That bitch, she really deserves to die! You just wait. I’m booking a flight back home right now. We’ll go and destroy that monster together."
It wasn’t surprising Samuel was out of the loop. After he caused a scene at the Donovan Family’s birthday party, his parents had shipped him abroad to "gain some experience."
Even the investigative file that helped him see Cassandra Lynch’s true colors had been compiled by his parents and sent directly to him.
At the time, Samuel’s first reaction after reading the file was to call Mason Reese and tell him and Sandra Reese to stay far away from that treacherous woman, Cassandra Lynch.
Unfortunately, at the time, Mason was still hung up on the "life-saving" debt he thought he owed Cassandra from their childhood. Furthermore, the timing of Samuel’s call was sensitive; it was not long after Cassandra had been kicked out of the Lynch Family and disowned.
Mason naturally assumed Samuel was distancing himself from Cassandra because of her change in status. He was deeply disappointed, and they started arguing before they’d even exchanged a few sentences. They hadn’t contacted each other since.
Yet even at the height of his anger, Samuel had never doubted that Cassandra had saved Mason and his sister back then. He just figured that time changes people. People grow up, and not always for the better. The kind-hearted girl who had once extended a hand to her friends had now become a hypocritical, materialistic woman.
’Who would have thought that a certain someone was simply rotten to the core and had never changed at all!’
Over on his end, Samuel was rubbing his hands together, ready to pack his things and head back to cause some trouble, settling both new and old scores at the same time.
But Mason’s next words brought him to a screeching halt.
"There’s no need. She was arrested two days ago."
"Arrested?!"
"Mhm. That Miss Donovan said she hired someone for a hit, disguised as a car accident, but something went wrong and several innocent people were killed by mistake."
"Holy shit! If that’s true, she’ll be rotting in prison for life."
"None of this has been fully investigated yet, so we can’t jump to conclusions."
"With Miss Donovan vouching for it, it’s almost certainly true. If you’re still uneasy about it, you should investigate it yourself. But the incident with you and Sandy happened a long time ago, so you might not find anything. My advice? If you really can’t dig anything up, you might want to try looking for Miss Donovan."
Mason was taken aback. "Look for that... Miss Donovan?"
