Chapter 208: Chapter 191: Catching the Secret Agents (Part 2)
Seeing Wei Dongliang’s confidence, and admitting that his reasoning was sound, they had to agree. Dahei Mountain was enormous, and it was the dead of winter. The two special agents were incredibly cunning, with extensive anti-tracking and mountain warfare experience. At this point, they had no other options but to hope this Zhao Wendong was truly as incredible as everyone claimed.
"They’re here!"
Someone shouted. The crowd looked toward the distance where a jeep was speeding toward them. All eyes were fixed on the vehicle. A door opened, and Chen Baoguo helped open the one in the back. As everyone watched, a large yellow country dog leaped out first, followed by two black ones. Finally, a young man emerged, an eagle cage in his hand.
"Holy shit, who is this guy?"
"No idea, but he looks like a total badass."
The PLA soldiers didn’t move a muscle. The police officers whispered amongst themselves. The militia members, however, weren’t so reserved; they were loudly asking about and discussing Zhao Wendong’s background. To make over a hundred people wait for him and then make such a dazzling entrance—it was cool as hell.
Among the militiamen, Chen the Seventh stared in disbelief at Zhao Wendong as he got out of the vehicle, then nudged the already dumbstruck Zhou Mancang beside him.
"Holy cow, Mancang, the reinforcement we’ve been waiting for is your cousin? I told you he was some big shot leader, but you denied it."
Zhou Mancang was completely bewildered himself. He never imagined that the expert reinforcement they had been waiting for all morning would turn out to be his own cousin, Zhao Wendong. He instinctively waved and shouted.
"Dongzi! Dongzi!"
Zhao Wendong heard him and looked over, spotting his cousin Zhou Mancang standing among the militiamen, waving excitedly. He smiled and nodded in return, continuing without pause toward the leaders.
"Zhao Wendong, reporting for duty!"
"Hahaha! Comrade Wendong, we meet again!"
"Hello, Special Commissioner Wei."
Wei Dongliang smiled, shook Zhao Wendong’s hand, and then gestured to the oldest leader standing beside him to make an introduction.
"Let me introduce you. This is Director Tang of the Revolutionary Committee."
"Hello, Director Tang."
Director Tang looked to be in his sixties. He was hale and hearty, clearly taking good care of himself. With a stern and dignified expression, he was an imposing figure. He shook Zhao Wendong’s hand, his face serious.
"Comrade Zhao Wendong, you come highly recommended, so we’ve asked you to make this trip. From this moment on, the soldiers and everyone else are under your command. Are you confident?"
"I guarantee the mission will be accomplished!"
Zhao Wendong accepted the mission directly, without a single wasted word. This immediately impressed the leaders. He then looked toward Liu Haisheng, who was standing near the back.
"Farm Director Liu, I need the sketches my mother-in-law drew of the two special agents."
"They’re all ready."
Liu Haisheng handed over a drawing. It depicted two men in their thirties, their clothing and expressions captured in vivid, lifelike detail. It was clearly the work of Wang Lulu.
"Xiaojin, come!"
Wasting no time, Zhao Wendong called Xiaojin over and had it look at the drawing again and again. Seeing him make an eagle stare repeatedly at a picture, the crowd started murmuring again.
"Is this really going to work? Is he trying to get the eagle to find them?"
"How would an eagle know we’re looking for people? It would have to be a genius to understand that!"
"You guys don’t know jack! It was my cousin’s eagle that found the man-eating tiger last time."
Zhou Mancang announced proudly to the surrounding militiamen, immediately drawing gasps of astonishment from the crowd.
"Holy shit, really?"
"If it can really find people, that’ll be absolutely legendary."
’Find these two men.’
He repeated this many times. Just as Director Tang’s face was beginning to turn green with impatience, Zhao Wendong finally heard the correct thought from Xiaojin. He quickly put the drawing away, patted the eagle’s head to confirm the target, and fed it a strip of meat before launching it into the air. Xiaojin spread its wings and soared toward the clouds, circled once, then flew deep into Dahei Mountain.
"What do we do now? Just keep waiting here?"
Seeing Zhao Wendong release Xiaojin, Liu Haisheng asked him for the next set of orders. Zhao Wendong glanced at Dahuang. ’I brought Dahuang to give it a shot, too. Since I can hear its thoughts, we can take a two-pronged approach. Dahuang has area-search capabilities as well.’
"Yes, we wait for now. Do we have any of the two agents’ belongings?"
"Yes, we do. But we’ve already tried using the military dogs to track them. It didn’t work well."
After speaking, Liu Haisheng found an officer, and soon a piece of clothing belonging to one of the agents was brought over. ’Dahei Mountain is just too vast,’ Zhao Wendong thought. ’Xiaojin can find the general area, but people aren’t like normal prey—they move and relocate quickly. So the plan is to use Xiaojin to pinpoint a rough location, then have Dahuang and the others track them on the ground.’
"No rush. We’ll start the search once we get to the general area."
Seeing that Zhao Wendong had merely released an eagle and then ordered everyone to rest in place, eat, and drink, even the PLA soldiers couldn’t help but start whispering among themselves. Director Tang paced back and forth anxiously. If not for the fact that a full day of searching yesterday had turned up nothing, he would have already ordered everyone back into the mountains. But the potential danger and the ongoing drain on their supplies were more than they could currently afford.
In contrast, Zhao Wendong was the most confident person there. He was casually chatting with Jiang Weimin and a few others. Seeing that no outsiders were nearby, Jiang Weimin lowered his voice and spoke to Zhao Wendong with a hint of amusement.
"Wendong, this whole incident is actually related to you, you know!"
"Huh? What’s it got to do with me? I’ve just been minding my own business, hunting in the mountains!"
The wronged look on Zhao Wendong’s face wasn’t an act this time; he was genuinely bewildered. ’How could I possibly be mixed up with special agents?’
