I Only Summon Villainesses

Chapter 379: The Insidious Curse

I waited for the two of them to speak. They glanced at each other’s faces, and suddenly they looked far friendlier than before.

Then White Feather broke the silence.

“We can’t stop… we don’t have control over it.”

I folded my hands, keeping my gaze fixed on her. She paused for a moment before continuing.

“The curse of our bloodline is one that destines us to consume each other. Unless we do so, we will never know peace.”

Yuan’s voice joined in.

“However, my grandfather, who was a reincarnator, found a way to fix that—by spreading the bloodline thin across six different women. Not just ordinary women, but women of unique races: a wolf-kin, a cat-kin, a wood elf, a fox-kin, a merfolk, and a fae.”

I massaged my temple.

’As expected of Mr. Reincarnator. Much respect!’

I also noted that, unlike me — who came from another world in person — Yuan’s grandfather had most likely been reborn in this world, therefore carrying the full bloodline of the dragon.

White Feather nodded at what Yuan had said.

“However, for my clan it remains the same. My daughter carries this curse and hunger to consume even more powerfully than any of my predecessors, and in order to stop its cruel growth through every leader that rises, my clan and I made a very terrible decision four hundred years ago.”

I stared into her eyes, already suspecting what that decision had been.

Because Yuan had only a small percentage of the bloodline in her, it was not as intense as a maddening urge for slaughter. However, in White Feather’s daughter, it was as intense as that — at least according to how strongly she had expressed it.

In fact, this was the very reason she had been stolen by that shameless Fairywind—to be used as a weapon.

When Yuan took the throne from her brothers, she enlisted the help of Crystal Deep, and they wanted the support of the entire Moon Clan—which she automatically granted when she became the Matriarch of her clan.

Of course, they were driven by greed: the desire to own what the Boundless Wave controlled and to become the center of the Waterlands. Meanwhile, Yuan believed she was doing what was right, because the two clans had been at each other’s throats for generations.

But there was a small problem in everything Yuan had reported to me about her journey to reclaim her rightful inheritance. And it was easy not to notice.

“…all of them?”

“Yes, Lord Cade. I slaughtered all of them.”

I paused, looking at her with a complicated expression.

Yuan spoke with a tone of necessity, even while describing the slaughter of her siblings. Although she had spoken of them with contempt when we were on the ship, seeing her now almost made me wonder just how cold-blooded a killer she truly was.

But that thought lasted only a moment.

Because I knew quite well what they had told me.

’They can’t control it…’

I sighed and wiped my face with my palm.

’I understand the drive to slaughter the Boundless Wave Clan… it’s because she reunited what her grandfather separated…’

My gaze lazily held Yuan’s.

“Yuan, during our journey, did you ever intend to destroy the Boundless Wave Clan?”

She quickly shook her head.

“Of course not! This was simply between my clan and me… but I owed the Crystal Clan…”

I shrugged.

“That’s one way to see it. But another way to see it is that it might simply be what you were forced to believe.”

I stared intently at her.

“If by slaughtering your siblings you somehow reunited the curses your father separated, then that most likely means the uncontrollable urge to slaughter the Boundless Wave Clan still remains in you. But perhaps you’ve learned to adapt it to your own conscience, fueling your intent and resolve.”

As I said this, Yuan frowned. She seemed to be waking up from something, her frown deepening.

It made sense that she hadn’t realized this before. The curse — no matter how little of it ran through her veins — was still enough to fuel her anger at being treated unfairly. It was enough to make her train relentlessly for years and travel all the way from Aetheris to the Waterlands just to slaughter her entire family.

Somehow, I felt I had to be very wary of this curse.

’It’s a good thing I’m not one of those eleven bloodlines. I could be fucked… hehe…’

Bloodlines, as it turned out, weren’t so weak after all. Maybe it was simply the nature of bloodlines that had existed for centuries, but if this was how several of them were designed, then I had serious questions for whoever had called them weak.

’It must be the church. They’re always the ones spreading misinformation!’

Then I remembered the damn fool I had captured. I focused on Yuan and asked,

“How could the church be involved in all of this?”

She looked surprised.

“The Eternal Light Church?”

She shook her head.

“I’m not sure they are…”

White Feather spoke with bitter contempt.

“Oh, they most certainly are. Those bastards consider us heretics—especially the eleven lineages. They hate our guts and our power. But their influence in Ashara is little to non-existent, since the continent is mostly ruled by worshippers of the God of Conquest, with whom they are enemies…”

“For a long time they have hindered the flow of my business to certain regions. My relationship with the Fate Weavers is good, and the kind sisters have always stood up for my business when needed—especially since they are heavy beneficiaries of its success. But I know those Eternal bastards are always searching for a way to strike down a heretic. They will go to any extent.”

A warm smile spread across my lips. Seeing White Feather boil with such anger and hatred for the church filled me with an ineffable satisfaction.

’If only Maggie could see the light!’

I sighed.

’Soon… very soon.’

“Oh well then. This is good. Reasons to destroy them keep stacking up. This is very good.”

I focused first on Yuan.

“I want this mindless slaughter to stop, which most likely means we have to do something about the curse. You also have to protect yourselves from whoever is hunting you.”

I turned to White Feather.

“And we have to find your daughter.”
