I Level Up By Making Enemies

Chapter 51 A Complicated Deal

The difference was obvious the moment they left the hall. Lin Feng still walked between Bai Yan and Su Qing, but the atmosphere had changed. Disciples who passed them still stared, a male inside Orchid Veil remained a rare sight, yet the open hostility had softened into something closer to wary curiosity. Word of the Sect Master’s decision had clearly begun to spread.

"Personal attendant," she muttered under her breath as they walked.Bascially having to babysitt a manchild. My luck is outstanding."

Su Qing’s expression stayed cool and professional. "Orders are orders Bai. Complaining will not change them."

Lin Feng kept his mouth shut. There was no good reply that wouldn’t make Bai Yan’s mood worse.

The outer diplomatic quarters sat near the edge of the sect’s properly maintained grounds, close enough to the wilder margins that the air still carried a faint trace of the swamp. The buildings had clearly stood unused for years. Vines had crawled up the pale stone walls and the courtyard flagstones were cracked and half buried in moss.

As they arrived, a small team of disciples with earth-element techniques were already at work. They were straightening walls, clearing debris, and forcing new stone into place with practiced efficiency. What had been a near ruin in the morning was rapidly becoming a functional, if simple, residence.

Bai Yan stopped at the entrance and turned to face him.

"New rules," she said. "You can move freely inside the quarters and the immediate courtyard But you do not leave the marked boundary without one of us. You do not approach the inner sect paths. You do not cause any incident that makes the elders regret this arrangement. Clear?"

"Clear."

Su Qing added, "Meals will be provided. Basic medical resources are available if your injuries require them. Beyond that, you are expected to handle yourself."

The main room was larger than the confinement cell and already mostly cleaned. A proper bed, a low table, a washing area, and a single window that looked out toward the distant treeline where the swamp began. It was still plain, but it no longer felt like a place designed to remind him he was unwanted.

Lin Feng set down what little he carried and sat on the edge of the bed. His body was still far from recovered. The chest wound and deep bruises from the water beast would need more time.

Bai Yan leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed.

Su Qing remained near the window, gaze turned outward. "The Sect Master said the sect would help you regarding the swamp. Until further instructions arrive, you will remain here and recover. Do not attempt to approach the boundary on your own."

Lin Feng looked toward the distant treeline. He could feel it even from here, a subtle, unyielding refusal in that direction. Seventy one days left, give or take. The letter had changed his status inside Orchid Veil, but it had not solved the real problem.

"Any idea what kind of help they mean?" he asked.

Bai Yan shrugged. "Above our level."

"And the letter itself?"

Su Qing’s voice was cool. "Not our place to discuss."

Of course it wasn’t.

The rest of the day passed in a strange mix of improvement and frustration. The earth element disciples finished the basic repairs by late afternoon. Meals arrived on time. Bai Yan spent most of the hours openly bored and irritable, occasionally stepping into the courtyard to train forms with sharp, economical movements. Su Qing maintained a quieter watch, speaking only when necessary. Lin Feng used the time to cycle qi, re apply salve to the worst injuries, and test the exact limits of his new freedom. The marked boundary around the quarters was invisible but clear. Every time he approached it too closely, one of the two women appeared without fail.

Evening settled with a thin mist drifting in from the direction of the swamp. Lin Feng stood in the courtyard after finishing a slow recovery cycle and stared at the darkening treeline.

Behind him, Bai Yan’s voice cut through the quiet.

"Don’t stand there looking tragic. It won’t make the swamp open up any faster."

Lin Feng didn’t turn around. "Wasn’t trying to look tragic. Just calculating how much time I’m wasting."

Lin Feng finally turned away from the treeline and headed back inside.

The letter had bought him a second chance at remaining in Orchid Veil territory. Sooner or later the sect’s promised "help" would arrive, and he would have to face the swamp again this time with an entire all-female sect watching to see whether Yue Qingfeng’s strange guest was worth the trouble he had already caused.

Until then, he had no choice but to wait, recover, and keep the thin thread of his deadline from running out completely.

The senior disciple arrived in the late morning, flanked by two outer disciples carrying a long, sealed case of black wood.

Lin Feng stepped out of the main room. The senior disciple looked him over once, then nodded to the two attendants.

"The Sect Master has authorized the next step," she said. "Prepare him. We leave for the boundary within the hour."

No further explanation was offered.

The walk to the swamp’s edge took less time than Lin Feng expected. A small escort of Orchid Veil disciples accompanied them, but stopped well short of the true boundary. Only the senior disciple, Bai Yan, Su Qing, and Lin Feng continued the final stretch. The familiar, watchful pressure of the swamp returned and with it, the clear, invisible rejection that still barred him from taking even one step further.

The senior disciple stopped at a flat platform of pale stone half swallowed by roots and moss. Old carvings, worn almost smooth by time, formed a wide circle on the ground.

"This is as far as our authority reaches," she said. "The method is old. It does not compel the swamp. It only requests its attention. What happens after is between you and whatever listens."

She opened the black case. Inside lay a single stick of dark incense, a small jade knife, and a shallow bowl of cloudy liquid that smelled of wet earth and old blood.

Bai Yan’s expression tightened. Su Qing remained impassive, but her eyes tracked every movement.

Lin Feng was instructed to sit in the center of the carvings. The incense was lit. The liquid was poured in a thin ring around him. When the senior disciple nodded, he pricked his finger with the jade knife and let a drop of blood fall into the incense smoke.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then the mist moved against the wind.

The pressure descended the same vast, irritated presence that had crushed the water beast’s killing intent and thrown him out of the middle channels. It did not take form this time. The air itself grew dense enough to make breathing an effort.

A voice that seemed to come from everywhere, spoke and It carried no warmth.

"You again."

Lin Feng kept his posture steady. "I want to re-enter."

"You were expelled. Why should i allow access to you a second time?"

"Because I’m willing to make a deal with you."

A low, almost amused ripple moved through the pressure.

"Fine. There is a creature in the deepest layer," the swamp said. "It has nested in the deep roots for a long time. It disrupts the flow. It ignores the old order. It has become... bothersome. Remove it, and i will tolerate your presence again. Once again, you will receive no protection and the beasts will still hunt you. The hostility will still press you. If you die, the matter ends. If you abandon the task permanently, the tolerance extended to these women who brought you here will be reduced. Their access will suffer and their harvests will thin. That is the price."

Lin Feng felt the weight of the condition settle fully on him. Failure would not only cost him. It would cost Orchid Veil. He nodded.

"I accept."

The pressure lingered for another long moment, as if the swamp were studying him one final time. Then it withdrew enough that the invisible barrier blocking his path thinned and vanished.

"Enter, then," the presence said, already fading. "And do not make so much unnecessary noise again... until you are ready to face the one."

The mist settled. The heavy sense of direct attention receded. In its place remained only the ordinary, dangerous awareness of the swamp open to him once more.

The senior disciple exhaled quietly and closed the black case.

"It is done," she said. "You have your access. The conditions are binding. Bai Yan, Su Qing you will accompany him to the outer boundary and confirm the re-entry. After that, your previous orders stand. He remains under observation while in our territory."

Bai Yan looked at Lin Feng with a complicated expression. Irritation, reluctant acceptance, and a thin edge of concern.

Lin Feng stood, legs slightly unsteady from the lingering pressure, and looked at the now open path into the mist. He adjusted the satchel on his shoulder and stepped forward. The swamp allowed him through.
