I Level Up By Making Enemies

Chapter 43 The Old Sink

  • Next Chapter

First light came thin and gray through the mist.Lin Feng spend the night by the fire pit to take some well needed rest. When he got up he saw that Yu Mei was already awake, seated by the cold fire pit with the same unreadable expression she always wore.

She watched Lin Feng check the satchel, the knife, and the bandages on his thigh and shoulder without offering to help.

"Don’t force it if the pressure turns sharp," she said.

"I’ll keep that in mind. Lin Feng replied."

She gave a short nod and nothing else. Lin Feng left the shelter and headed in the direction she had marked.

The system updated again.

[Milestone Complete: 3/3 Non-Human Death Intent]

[Settlement Issued]

[Rage Points +7000]

[Current Rage Points : 10563]

[New Option Unlocked: Environmental Hostility Attunement – Basic]

[Next Milestone Seed Generated]

[Complete the first forced Hostile Beast Bind]

"Bind a hostile Beast? Now how would i even do that. Every Beast I’ve seen so far is too hideous to be a pet." Lin Feng decided he’ll decide when the time comes and for now he’ll focus on the task he currently have.

The walk towards the sink took most of the morning. Once again he followed Yu Mei’s rules without cutting corners. By the time he reached the sink, the light had turned a flat, colorless white.

The place was a wide basin sunk into the swamp floor, ringed by high root walls. The qi here was denser than anything he had touched so far, laced with the residue of old, settled anger.

Lin Feng stood at the rim for a long time, testing the feel of it. Then he climbed down, found a stable root platform near the center, and sat.

He started with the normal way by steady breathing, clearing the mind and drawing the dense qi in carefully and refine it through his meridians the way any cultivator would.

The sink rejected it almost immediately and the pressure spiked hard. His foundation shuddered under the sudden weight and pain built behind his eyes and down his spine. For a few dangerous seconds the qi threatened to reverse and tear.

Lin Feng aborted the cycle and opened his eyes, sucking air through his teeth.

"Yeah," he muttered. "Of course thenormal way tries to kill me."

He waited until the worst of the backlash faded t then he changed approach. Instead of emptying his mind, he filled it. The deadline, Zhao Feng’s and his other enemy’s faces etc. He fed the irritation and stubborn spite until they grew sharp in his chest, then pulled the sink’s qi in again. Treating the old residual anger like an opponent he was feeding on.

The same dense pressure that had tried to crack him open now poured in cleaner. His meridians opened rather than getting tore. The foundation of his cultivation packed tighter and steadily rose.

The sink kept pushing back in waves and twice the pressure came close to tipping into real deviation. Both times he answered by digging harder into spite instead of trying to calm down.

The method held, but the strain climbed fast as s sweat ran into his eyes. His injuries throbbed and the ache in his chest turned deep and hot. Yet h e didn’t stop.

The dense residual hostility kept pouring in, packing his foundation tighter and tighter until something in the center of his cultivation began to tremble on the edge of change. Lin Feng gritted his teeth, held the edge of anger steady, and forced the cycle to keep turning. Then the trembling peaked.

For a moment the pressure in his meridians felt unbearable then it broke and reformed. Qi flooded through newly stabilized channels. The density of his foundation jumped. The world sharpened for a few breaths before settling again. He had crossed the line.

Qi Condensation Level 4.

Lin Feng held the new balance carefully, riding out the last waves of the sink’s residual anger until he was sure the breakthrough had stabilized. Only then did he force the cycle to end and stay motionless, breathing hard, while the roaring in his ears faded.

[Cultivation Breakthrough Confirmed]

[Qi Condensation – Level 4]

[Foundation: Stabilized]

[High density residual hostility absorbed]

[Warning: Post breakthrough meridian strain remaining. Recovery recommended.]

Lin Feng wiped his face, drank from the waterskin, and tested his body.. His control was much better now. The residual strain from the forced session still hummed through his meridians, but it was the strain of success, not failure. He climbed out of the basin and looked back once.

Such a strange place that had tried to break him when he was being peaceful and had pushed him into the next level when he met its old rage with his own.

He chose to return to Yu Mei’s shelter for the moment instead of continuing further. He moved carefully and by the time the shelter took shape in the fog, the light had begun to thin.

Yu Mei was outside. She looked him over and paused slightly when she felt the change in his qi.

"You broke through," she said.

Lin Feng sat down on the familiar root and let out a long breath.

"You were right again. It tried to break me when I did it the normal way," he said. " But then i switched method and it worked."

Yu Mei studied the denser quality of his presence for another moment, then gave a small nod.

"You’re either luckier than you look or more suited to this place than most." She tapped the dirt lightly with one finger.

"Rest tonight. Tomorrow we talk about what this changes... and where you should go next. "

Lin feng nodded and leaned against the tree, and closed his eyes. The Qi running through his body was so fulfilling that strangely he didn’t even feel hunger or thirst.

Lin Feng was in deep sleep when Yu Mei’s hand clamped onto his shoulder and shook hard.

"Wake up. And be quiet."

Lin Feng’s eyes snapped open. The shelter was still dim. No light of proper morning yet. But the atmosphere felt wrong, it’s eerily quiet all around him now.

He sat up without speaking. Yu Mei was already at the entrance, body half turned, listening. Lin Feng moved beside her and looked out. He didn’t anything except that the mist was moving. Long sheets of it surged and folded against the natural flow of the air, pushed by something large traveling inside.

Yu Mei’s voice stayed low. "The sink. Something powerful felt it and came to look after disturbance you made yesterday. "

She exhaled through her nose, short and tired. "I knew this would happen sooner or later once I agreed to help you."

"In a way I’m protected" Her eyes stayed on the fog. "But I still don’t want my shelter smashed flat or this whole stretch turned into a mud pit."

Lin Feng watched the surging mist. "You said you’re protected. What is that protection, exactly?" Lin Feng asked. "The Orchid Veil disciples talked like they had something extra out here too. What is it?"

Yu Mei was silent for a few seconds.

"It’s something only the swamp itself can give," she said finally. "When you reach a real understanding with it,a deal, an acceptance it marks you. And the things that live here won’t attack you. But to the swamp you’re still a visitor. And to most of what lives here, you’re an intruder."

She nodded toward the moving mist.

"That one is strong. Stronger than anything you’ve fought. It came looking for the source of the disturbance. It won’t get bored and leave. Sooner or later it will track the residual trail back to you. "

Lin Feng stared into the surging fog. And the new system milestone came up in his head.

Complete the first forced Hostile Beast Bind.

A slow, familiar spark of bad ideas lit up in his chest. If this thing was powerful enough to worry Yu Mei, and if it wasn’t completely hideous, he wouldn’t mind turning it into a pet. Binding it would finish the milestone, give him a real weapon, and solve the immediate problem .

He opened the System Shop.

After the milestone payout and what he still had left, he was sitting on a little over ten thousand five hundred Rage Points.

Upgrades for Fleet Footed Dash, Thick Face Counterstep, Blackroot traction strips and pungent ward vial were were available.

New combat skills sat further down, expensive and flashy. Then he filtered for anything tied to binding, forcing submission, dominance, or amplifying the weight of hostility.

A few options surfaced. Most were locked behind higher ranks or costs that would clean him out completely. One mid tier item and one skill fragment looked borderline useful for a forced bind attempt. It was expensive and risky, but aimed at exactly the moment when a target’s hatred peaked and its will could be crushed.

Yu Mei glanced at him.

"Well?" she said, voice still quiet. "It’s not going to wait for you to finish whatever you’re doing. Are you going to run or fight or do something stupid ?"

"Stupid," he said. "Probably stupid."
