I Level Up By Making Enemies

Chapter 26 Partial Access

  • Next Chapter

Recommended disciples stood in two lines beneath hanging banners of the Flowing Wind Sect. Incense burned in pale trails near the dais. Enforcement disciples flanked the walls. On the raised seats ahead, several elders had already taken their places.

Lin Feng stood in the second line with his ribs still bound beneath his robes. The pain had dulled into a dull ache. One by one, names were called.

Some disciples received immediate confirmation of Inner Sect entry. Others were dismissed with short reasons that managed to cloud their faces. The hall accepted both outcomes with the same formal stillness. Only the disciples themselves changed color.

When the recorder jade reached Lin Feng’s name, the stillness grew.

"Lin Feng of Block C," the attending deacon announced. "Assessment ranking within recommendation range. Pending Inner Sect review."

For a moment, no one spoke. Then an elder with iron gray hair and a narrow mouth leaned forward.

"I object. This disciple’s victories were obtained through disruption, boundary manipulation, and deliberate provocation," the elder continued. "The assessment records are filled with warnings. He remains under elevated observation. To accept such a person into the Inner Sect is to reward the ability to create scandal."

A second elder, broader in the shoulders and slower in speech, followed at once.

"There is a simpler problem. His cultivation is only Qi Condensation Level 3. In the present outer sect alone there remain disciples with higher realms who failed to enter the recommendation range by combat placement. If the Flowing Wind Sect begins admitting clever troublemakers at Level 3, what do we present at the next inter sect exchange? A joke with our name attached?"

A few eyes turned sideways toward Lin Feng, waiting to see whether he would open his mouth and set the hall on fire. He did not, atleast not ye

"Inner Sect entry is not merely a prize for surviving brackets. It is a standard. If the standard becomes elastic every time a disciple forces an ugly result onto the board, the Inner Sect will fill with exceptions." The elder continued.

The deacon by the recording jade hesitated, brush suspended.

On the dais, Elder Mo’s face was already dark with agreement. "He should remain in the outer sect under continued restriction. Let him raise his cultivation properly. If he still has ability then, review him again." several heads nodded to this.

The objections stacked quickly, each one practical enough to sound like responsibility. Taken together, they formed a wall with no obvious door.

Lin Feng stepped forward half a pace and cupped his fists.

"Elders," he said, "my ranking was recorded under the same rules as every other disciple in this hall. If those rules are valid only when the winner looks conventional, then the assessment board should write that down before the next tournament and save everyone time."

The iron gray elder’s eyes snapped toward him. "You are not invited to redefine sect standards."

"I am clarifying the one already used," Lin Feng replied. "I did not invent the platform boundary. I did not appoint the referees. I did not force the board to keep my wins. If the result is inconvenient, the inconvenience began when the sect agreed to count victories."

A few disciples lower in the line made the dangerous mistake of almost smiling. The broader elder’s qi pressed outward in a short, warning pulse that wiped those expressions flat.

"Sophistry," the broader elder said. "A Level 3 foundation cannot support Inner Sect cultivation rhythm. He would lag behind the entry lectures, drain teaching resources. The argument threatened to turn circular.

That was when the pressure in the hall changed. Even the objecting elders rose from their seats and turned toward the rear ascending passage.

A man in dark cyan robes entered the hall.

He looked older than Elder Mo, though not fragile. His hair was bound simply, his face unlined in the places vanity usually protected. The jade seal at his waist was enough to know who he was. The Master of the Flowing Wind Sect Yue Qingfeng

"Continue," he said, taking the central seat. "I could hear the dispute from the corridor. It has volume enough."

The iron gray elder cupped his fists. "Sect Master, this disciple’s recommendation has produced division. His methods are improper, his record unstable, and his cultivation too low. Accepting him now would lower the Inner Sect’s standing."

"And rejecting him," the precise elder added, "would affirm that the sect still possesses standards."

The Sect Master’s gaze moved once through the hall, passed over the recommended disciples, and rested on Lin Feng.

"You are Lin Feng."

"Yes, Sect Master."

"You withdrew after injury."

"Yes."

"You defeated disciples above the comfort of several elders in this room."

Lin Feng hesitated for half a second. "Yes."

A faint crease touched the corner of the Sect Master’s mouth.

"Elder Qi objects on conduct. Elder Zhao objects on realm. Elder Mo objects on history." The Sect Master folded one hand over the other. "All three objections are reasonable."

The objecting elders eased by a fraction.

Then the Sect Master continued, "So is the board."

The ease stopped.

"We told the outer sect that ranking and recorded performance would determine recommendation," he said. "If we tear out results whenever the method offends our taste, we are not upholding standards. We are protecting preferences. Other sects may mock a Level 3 entry. They will mock faster if they learn our boards mean nothing once the elders become embarrassed."

Elder Mo’s voice roughened. "Then the Flowing Wind Sect is to accept every irregularity that wins?"

"No," the Sect Master said. "It is to stop pretending the choice is pure acceptance or pure rejection."

He looked again at Lin Feng.

"Your realm is too low for formal Inner Sect registration. On that point, the elders are correct. A disciple at Qi Condensation Level 3 entering as if equal to the standard intake would invite ridicule, and some of it would be earned."

Lin Feng remained still.

"But neither is the sect served by discarding a disciple who repeatedly produced results under public conditions," the Sect Master went on. "So you will not be confirmed as a full inner disciple."

The sentence landed hard enough that several people exhaled too early, thinking they knew its ending.

"You will receive partial access," the Sect Master said.

The recorder jade brightened under the deacon’s hands.

"From today, Lin Feng is granted restricted clearance to selected Inner Sect training grounds, limited resource exchange, and supervised technique access. He will remain under observation. He will not hold formal inner disciple status, nor enjoy full allocation."

The Sect Master’s eyes hardened a degree.

"In addition, a deadline. Within one hundred days, you will raise your cultivation to Qi Condensation Level 8 and pass a stability verification before the Inner Registry. Meet the requirement, and your registration will be completed. Fail, and the recommendation becomes void. You return to the outer sect with no second path through this board."

Silence held. Then the hall fractured into controlled reaction. Some elders’ faces darked with open dissatisfaction. Others looked reluctantly appeased by the deadline. Among the disciples, shock split in multiple directions at once. Partial access was not victory in the pure sense. It was also not exile.

Elder Qi exhaled harshly. "One hundred days to climb from Level 3 to Level 8, under damaged meridians? Sect Master, that condition is already—"

"Sufficient to test whether he is an exception worth keeping," the Sect Master said. "If he cannot bear the pace, the sect loses nothing but if he can, the elders may argue less about the method and more about the result."

His gaze returned to Lin Feng one final time.

"Do you accept the condition?"

Every smart survival instinct in the room said the correct posture was bowed gratitude and soft words. Lin Feng cupped his fists and let his voice stay even.

"I accept."

He almost added that one hundred days was generous for people who planned to keep getting angry at him, then decided it’s not the time to farm ragebait points.

The Sect Master rose, and the hall’s pressure eased only after he had already turned away. "Record it. The review continues."

The deacon’s brush moved quickly, fixing the judgment into official shape. Names resumed. Other fates were announced. But for Lin Feng, the center of the morning had already closed around. When the assembly finally released, sunlight outside felt briefly unreal.

"Well? Accepted? Rejected? Sent to wash spirit beast pens until old age?" Lu Can bombarded him with questions.

Lin Feng held up the temporary clearance token now resting in his palm. The jade was paler than formal inner tokens, etched with restriction marks fine as hair.

"Neither," he said. "I got a door with a timer on it."

Lu Cang’s face cycled through relief, confusion, and fresh horror. "What does that mean?"

"It means the sect is willing to watch me climb," Lin Feng said, closing his hand around the token. "And even more willing to watch me fall if I’m slow."

Lin Feng adjusted his breathing around the ache in his ribs and started down the steps.

A timed path was still a path. And paths, timed or not, were places where people revealed what they could not afford to lose.
