I Learned Magic for All the Wrong Reasons
Chapter 70: Everybody Saw Him Do It
Dante entered the equipment room to find every useful place already assigned. The padded catch area occupied the center, the charge bank stood to its left, and Professor Bell’s control line hung beneath the empty rectangular frame. The ruby rested in its cradle on the supervised bench to the right.
A painted line separated the work area from six spectator chairs and standing space behind them. Jett waited at the physical release under Professor Bell’s instruction, while Lucan helped move a chair clear of the doorway without claiming any authority over the navy.
Honey, Posey, Rhae, and Anika stood where they could see the frame and each other. The notebook student held a pencil above a fresh page. Two other invited students waited beside her, including the man Dante had finally admitted to practice.
Dante looked at the small audience and decided that history often began in rooms with disappointing storage cabinets.
Professor Bell checked the diagram with him before uncovering the removable contact plate. Dante used the supplied lancet for the small blood contact already established at the observatory, then pressed a clean pad against his finger while the selector registered him.
His name appeared beside the living-source indicator. The ordinary bank’s charge showed separately on the stand, giving the room two readings to watch rather than one mysterious glow.
“First, the connection check,” Professor Bell said. “No tilt until we’ve ended that cleanly.”
He raised the empty frame an inch above the padding. Dante laid his hand against the grip, found the prepared path, and followed it far enough for the source indicator to brighten. At the stop instruction, he opened his hand and ended his effort.
The source indicator faded, and Professor Bell lowered the frame. Jett remained at the physical release without touching it until told, while the women each reported how they felt.
No one described a new symptom. Honey wrote down their answers separately, and Professor Bell checked the reader before agreeing to the single movement attempt.
Dante reset his hand. The frame rose to the marked height, its lower rail still close enough to the padding that a drop would land inside it. Professor Bell held his grip at the end of the visible control line.
The line tightened as Dante pressed into the familiar path. He could feel the command trying to keep the frame level, the same stubborn refusal that had existed in the locked-grip test. Instead of fighting the entire lift, he followed the section tied to its front rail.
Professor Bell’s wrist remained still. The line between his grip and the frame went slack, yet the frame stayed in the air.
“Are you letting it go?” the skeptical student asked from behind the line, his attention fixed on the professor’s grip.
“I’m maintaining my instruction,” Professor Bell replied. “Watch the lower rail, and don’t come forward.”
The distinction changed the room. Dante had not been handed a useful tool while a teacher pretended to resist. The teacher’s command remained in place, and the frame had stopped following it. Honey kept her eyes on the source reading while the others watched the floating wood, allowing both parts of the result to remain visible. Dante felt the pull through his hand and knew the next movement had to stay small, however large the moment felt.
Dante turned his hand through the agreed angle. The front rail lowered toward him, stopping beside the marked limit while the rear rose. From the chairs, the empty shape looked as though it had bent forward to acknowledge him.
The notebook student’s pencil stopped moving. Lucan’s smile disappeared into an expression of close attention, and even Jett kept his mouth shut for several valuable seconds.
There it was, Dante thought, the part everyone had been taking so long to understand. An experienced professor still held the original grip, but the spell had listened to him instead.
He wanted another movement immediately. A full turn would show the far side of the frame, and a higher lift would give the back row a better view. Posey watched him with her lips parted, her hand resting against Anika’s sleeve.
Warmth reached his upper lip. He noticed it before the drop fell, and the agreed stop suddenly became something he had to choose in front of people who wanted to see more.
Dante brought the rail back level and lowered the frame onto the padding. He opened his hand and ended the borrowed control while Professor Bell checked the source indicator.
It faded. Jett opened the ordinary supply release on instruction, leaving the frame resting flat with no line holding its weight.
Dante’s hand shook when he reached for his nose. Rhae crossed the line only after Professor Bell cleared the equipment, then brought him a chair while Jett offered a tissue.
“Your conquest has a cleaning bill,” Jett said, pointing to the small mark on Dante’s sleeve.
“I’ll charge it to the defeated regime,” Dante said, accepting the tissue before a second drop could improve the evidence.
“The defeated regime owns the washing machine,” Jett replied, and somebody behind the chairs laughed before remembering how quiet the room had become.
Professor Bell checked Dante’s condition and kept him seated while the bleeding stopped. Honey recorded the visible strain instead of trimming it from the successful result. The women again reported no obvious new flare, which the professor carefully described as an observation from this attempt.
“You displaced my control without me handing it over,” he told Dante. “You completed the permitted movement and released. That doesn’t establish control over every spell, and it doesn’t remove the cost.”
Dante repeated the limit when the notebook student asked. It cost him remarkably little generosity because she had already watched the frame bow. When he lifted his clean hand to point at the padding, she glanced at Professor Bell before moving closer. Dante had only meant to show her where it landed, but he enjoyed discovering that his smallest gesture now deserved checking.
Posey crouched beside his chair and touched the clean part of his hand. “You stopped when you said you would.”
He had expected praise for the impossible part, but the relief in her voice made this one feel unexpectedly valuable.
When Professor Bell let him leave, Jett took him back toward the residence with instructions to rest and report any further symptoms. Professor Bell returned the ruby to its case and locked it away after preserving the record.
Honey gathered the last notebooks while the student returned from the corridor. The room had emptied except for Professor Bell at the far cabinet, out of their quiet conversation.
“The plate made him the source,” the student said. “Could it name somebody else instead?”
Honey closed her folder. “That isn’t a choice we can make from watching one test.”
The student looked at the chair where Dante had held the tissue beneath his nose. “But if it could, I’d do it. He wouldn’t have to bleed for us again.”
