I Learned Magic for All the Wrong Reasons
Chapter 64: The Part He Left Out
Dante deleted the part of his reply that promised mastery, then removed the sentence about awakening hidden authority because it appeared to require a fee and a special robe. He gave the student a time for ordinary release practice instead.
His private council protested the loss of several excellent phrases. He allowed them to keep the robe for later consideration.
At checkout, he took the claim ticket from behind his phone cover and collected the sealed ruby case from the staffed safe. Honey checked the service number against her photograph while the clerk recorded the collection. Dante carried it onto the coach and kept it beneath his seat, where Jett could not mistake it for the snack bag.
The return journey passed with Jett asleep against the window and Lucan holding a cup upright whenever the road turned. Dante revised a release diagram on his tablet while Posey corrected the position of one arrow.
“That ends underneath the load,” she said. “Wouldn’t you want it clear before you let go?”
He moved the arrow, then informed her that she had prevented an unnecessary casualty among the diagrams. Her pleased smile made his next three minutes of studying almost entirely useless.
Blackwell’s gate opened onto the late afternoon campus, where a maintenance golem held a barrier across a damaged strip of path. Flower sprites worked around its feet, fitting crushed blooms onto green stems while the golem waited with the patience of something that had never had a class to miss.
A student on the opposite side recognized Dante. Another turned to look, then asked whether he was the man from the guard video.
Dante adjusted his grip on the case. This was a modest reception, but governments had begun with worse attendance.
“Were you scared when it came at you?” a girl asked.
“I was busy,” he replied, enjoying the effect until the student beside her asked whether everyone had got out without being hurt.
“We got them out,” he said. “Some people needed help afterward.”
Posey touched his arm before leaving for squad practice. She introduced him to a passing teammate, remembered a change in their training time, and hurried away with her own bag. Dante watched her disappear past a planter that was arguing with a gardener about drainage.
He called Mom while they crossed toward the teaching building. She asked whether he had returned safely, whether he had eaten, and whether the vacation had involved any more foolish bets.
“No new bets,” Dante told her, selecting a small, sturdy piece of truth.
“Good, because I can’t afford to lose you to somebody’s chores.”
The equipment room sat beyond the practical hall, with high windows facing the service courtyard. Empty frames hung on wall hooks, padded trays filled the lower shelves, and the central bench had enough clear space to open the case without balancing it on anybody’s travel bag. A safety screen folded against the far wall remained unlit.
Dante recognized the ordinary tools around the locked cabinets and found them unexpectedly reassuring. Nothing in the room required a hidden entrance or a whispered title. He had brought the frightening part in himself, which made the imagined grandeur of the visit harder to enjoy.
Professor Bell met them in the equipment room. Honey, Anika, and Rhae joined Dante beside the workbench while Jett and Lucan left their travel bags outside the door. The professor checked the seal before connecting a reader to the case’s service port.
A narrow strip of light crossed the reader’s screen. Professor Bell enlarged two marked sections and set them beside the matching account on his tablet.
“The selected source matched the director’s registration,” he said. “The warning came before the release. This record can establish the order, but it can’t tell me whether a person agreed.”
“He didn’t agree,” Honey said. “I chose to continue after he asked us to stop.”
She described the improving reading without changing it into an excuse. Anika explained the door, Rhae her part in the restraint and eventual demand to stop, and Dante admitted deciding not to meet the source.
Professor Bell listened without making them repeat the dinner argument. He asked two questions about the controls, marked the difference between witnessed acts and equipment readings, and saved the result beside their accounts.
“The director will receive the factual findings through the contact he provided,” he said. “His complaint isn’t settled by your attendance here. The temporary worker’s circumstances also need their own account.”
Dante studied the case while the professor spoke to the lender’s service office. It was strange how an object could promise a glorious future and still require somebody to confirm where it would be stored.
The remaining loan allowed secure university storage after the call, and Professor Bell placed the case inside a locked cabinet behind the bench. Dante received the storage receipt instead of the key.
“Keeping it here doesn’t permit another use,” the professor said. “I also reviewed the earlier rescue record, where you selected yourself.”
He brought that reading onto the screen. Dante recognized the point where the weather screen had held while Jett and Lucan worked on the jam.
“You briefly carried the living cost and still changed a control path you hadn’t built,” Professor Bell said. “That’s worth investigating. It doesn’t explain why the others were affected before, and it doesn’t prove the next attempt would be safe.”
Dante could work with worth investigating. It sounded like the polite beginning of a much longer title.
“A later, limited test may answer one question,” the professor continued. “Tomorrow, you will use the same ordinary equipment as everyone else in your assessment.”
Dante accepted this minor administrative insult and left with his notes. Outside, the student from his message waited beside a wall display showing tomorrow’s rooms. She wore her hair tied back and held a notebook with several corrected release diagrams.
“I wasn’t sure whether the session was still happening after your trip,” she said.
“After the assessment, as planned,” he said, pointing to the corrected page. “Bring those diagrams, including the ones that didn’t work.”
Her shoulders eased. “The guard in the clip, was it listening because you were stronger than the man controlling it?”
Dante knew the answer required a difference between power and control, then another difference between taking a spell and understanding it. The hallway had suddenly acquired an audience of three, which made the shorter answer much more attractive.
“He couldn’t keep it,” Dante said.
The student’s impressed silence pleased him. He let it remain, imagining the sentence traveling through the residence ahead of him.
Behind his shoulder, Professor Bell spoke from the open equipment-room doorway. “And that is why your next lesson needs to begin with what you just left out.”
