Chapter 216 - 118: You Actually Want to Be My Mother-in-Law?
Chapter 216: Chapter 118: You Actually Want to Be My Mother-in-Law?
Jiang Wanyi blushed and said nothing, while the female doctor’s smile grew wider.
’I have a feeling these two might actually go home and try for a second baby.’
"I’ll write you an order for a blood draw. Get her blood drawn first, and if there are no issues, you can go home and continue bringing her fever down the way you have been. Be quick about it. The blood draw station is on the fourth floor. The results should be ready this morning; otherwise, you’ll have to wait until the afternoon."
"Okay, thank you, Doctor."
The two of them took the order and prepared to get their child’s blood drawn.
"You go pay while I take our daughter to the fourth floor. Let’s hurry," Chen Yuan said.
"Okay, you go on ahead."
Chen Yuan went ahead with their daughter. Jiang Wanyi paid the bill on her phone and quickly followed him to the fourth floor.
The moment she arrived, she was met with waves of crying. The wails were heart-wrenching, and even though they weren’t from her own child, it was still painful to hear.
When she reached the blood draw center, she saw Chen Yuan already in line. Her own precious daughter had started crying, too.
Jiang Wanyi couldn’t help but sigh.
’They haven’t even drawn your blood yet, why are you crying already? Did you really have to join in on the fun?’
Soon, it was their turn. Jiang Wanyi couldn’t bring herself to help hold her down.
"Order, please."
Chen Yuan handed the order to the nurse.
"Chen Yuhe, is that right?"
"Yes."
"Come on, sweetie. Give Auntie your hand."
"WAAAH..."
Mili was crying hard, her little fist clenched tight, refusing to move.
"Mili, be a good girl. Let Auntie see your hand. Just for a second."
As he spoke, Chen Yuan lifted Mili’s arm and held it out, glancing over at Jiang Wanyi.
She understood immediately. She took hold of Mili’s arm, keeping her from squirming.
Chen Yuan, meanwhile, was in charge of distracting the toddler, trying to soothe her with a small toy.
The nurse was experienced and seized the opportunity to insert the needle.
Jiang Wanyi watched with a frown as they drew two whole vials of blood. The sight was enough to break this mother’s heart.
"It’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t cry, Mili."
Once the blood was drawn, Chen Yuan picked Mili up and pressed a cotton ball to the spot.
"Mama will wipe away your tears."
Jiang Wanyi looked at Chen Yuan. "They took two big vials of blood."
"Breaks your heart, doesn’t it?"
"She’s so little. How could they take so much blood? I wonder how long it’ll take for her to get it back."
"It couldn’t be helped. As long as she isn’t seriously ill, that’s what matters most."
Jiang Wanyi knew that, of course, but it didn’t stop her heart from aching for her daughter.
"The nurse said the results would take two hours. I guess we won’t be able to get them this morning."
"They always give you a longer estimate. It should only take about half an hour, normally."
Chen Yuan held their daughter, looking much more relaxed.
"Let’s go back to the car. Once the results are ready, I’ll take the report to the doctor. You and our daughter can wait for me there. It’s best to minimize contact with people right now."
"Okay. Sorry to make you run around."
"It’s no trouble at all. Let’s head back to the car."
"Okay."
The three of them returned to the car, and Chen Yuan went to buy two hot drinks.
"Have something hot. You barely ate this morning. You need to get your energy back."
"Mm."
After a few sips of the hot fruit tea, she didn’t feel as hungry anymore.
Jiang Wanyi gently touched Mili’s forehead and said worriedly,
"She’s still a little warm."
"That’s normal. It takes time. But don’t be scared. I’m here."
"Mm-hmm..."
There was something Jiang Wanyi thought but didn’t say aloud.
’With Chen Yuan here, I’m truly not afraid of anything anymore.’
"Dada..."
Mili called out feebly, her voice lacking its usual energy. Her small hand clutched onto Chen Yuan.
Chen Yuan’s heart ached for her. She was usually so full of life, and now she barely had the strength to speak. It hurt to see.
"Daddy’s got you."
Chen Yuan scooped her into his embrace. The two of them, one big and one small, sat quietly in the car.
Gradually, they both fell silent.
When Jiang Wanyi saw that Chen Yuan had fallen asleep, her heart ached even more.
’When he came over last night, I felt an inexplicable sense of relief. I managed to sleep for a little while in the latter half of the night, and after that, I was completely out.’
’I don’t even know if he slept. All I know is that when I woke up, he was already getting her medicine ready.’
’He probably didn’t sleep at all.’
*Sigh...*
She rested her head in her hand and sighed, frustrated by her own helplessness. At a critical moment like this, she couldn’t do a thing.
After a little while, Chen Yuan woke up on his own.
He checked the time on his phone. More than half an hour had passed since the blood test.
"Check your phone, see if the results are up."
"Okay."
Jiang Wanyi opened the hospital’s app and tapped on the "Test Reports" section.
"They’re here. Look."
Chen Yuan leaned over to look. A few of the markers were high, but he didn’t know what they meant.
However, the diagnostic notes below stated that it wasn’t bacterial, viral, or even mycoplasma. Only then did he finally feel completely relieved.
"It’s probably just a reaction to the vaccine. Nothing to worry about. I’ll go show this to the doctor, and then we can head home."
"Okay."
Chen Yuan gently handed their daughter to Jiang Wanyi and headed back into the hospital.
After looking at the results, the doctor confirmed that there were no major issues and told them to just keep working on bringing the fever down.
He came out of the hospital and got back in the car.
"It’s nothing serious. Let’s go home."
"We didn’t eat anything this morning. What are you in the mood for? I’ll take you."
"Let’s skip it. Our daughter can’t handle being dragged around right now. Let’s just go home first."
"Okay."
Jiang Wanyi drove home. By the time they arrived, Mili was already asleep. She laid her gently on the bed, and the two adults finally got a moment to breathe.
"Let me give you a shoulder rub. You must be exhausted after today."
"I’m not tired. The doctor already vouched for me. This is nothing."
"Even so, you’re not made of iron. You barely slept last night."
Jiang Wanyi opened a drawer in the TV stand and took out a tube of ointment.
"The corner of your mouth is all blistered up. It’s as big as my thumbnail. It must hurt a lot."
"It’s alright. It doesn’t really hurt unless I touch it."
"Let me put some cream on it. I’ll make you some herbal tea later, too. It’ll help with the inflammation."
"Don’t worry about it. It’ll heal in a few days."
"Nope. When it comes to things in this house, you listen to me. You’ll do as I say."
Not giving him a chance to refuse, Jiang Wanyi adopted a firm tone. "Don’t move. I’m putting the cream on for you."
"Alright, I’ll listen to you."
She gently dabbed the ointment on the corner of Chen Yuan’s mouth, applying a thin layer.
"There."
After putting the ointment away, Jiang Wanyi changed into her pajamas and brought out a set for Chen Yuan as well. Once they had both changed, they felt much more comfortable.
Having barely slept all night, Chen Yuan was exhausted and lay down on the floor.
Jiang Wanyi sat down beside him and let him rest his head on her lap. She began massaging his temples, hoping it would help him relax.
"Even though you’re only her father in name, I’ve already made up my mind. She has to treat you well in the future."
Jiang Wanyi said slowly and deliberately, "I’m not just saying that. It’s what I truly believe."
"By the time that happens, she might not even know who I am anymore."
Chen Yuan kept his eyes closed. "Don’t put that pressure on yourself or on her. You don’t owe me anything, and neither does she."
"I knew you’d say that. But I’ve said my piece. If she doesn’t treat you well in the future, I’ll break her legs."
"She’s your own flesh and blood. You spanked her not too long ago and cried about it in secret. And now you’re talking about breaking her legs?"
"This is a matter of principle, and it’s not up for debate. She has to respect you just as much as she respects me."
Chen Yuan didn’t think Jiang Wanyi was making an empty promise; he understood her sincerity.
It’s just that right now, he didn’t want to think that far ahead. It was better to just live in the moment.
"Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. There’s no point in thinking about it so much. Just let things happen naturally."
Jiang Wanyi nodded, continuing to gently massage his head.
"Sometimes I wonder... if only you were a few years younger, or if she were a few years older. Wouldn’t that be nice?"
"It would... Huh???"
At first, Chen Yuan didn’t think much of it, taking it as a casual comment.
But as he thought it over, something seemed wrong. His eyes snapped open, and he stared at Jiang Wanyi.
"What’s that supposed to mean? After all the effort I’ve put into taking care of her, you want to be my *mother-in-law*?"
