I Inherited a Ruined Guild and the Strongest Women Wont Leave Me Alone
Chapter 40: Elara Chooses
Elara did not take Ren back to the ledger room.
She took him upstairs.
Into his room.
That alone changed the shape of the conversation. The last time they had stood at this door, Elara had been trying to correct a no she had meant as not yet. Tonight there was no panic in her face.
Elara closed the door with her elbow.
Her hands were still wrapped.
"Before you say anything," she said, "I have four terms."
Ren leaned against the door.
"I was beginning to worry you had become impulsive."
"I kissed you on a ledger table."
"Exactly. Terrifying decline."
Her mouth twitched.
Then she became serious.
"Separate time."
"Yes."
"Shared invisible work."
"Yes."
"Public acknowledgment."
"Yes."
"And if I tell the Guildmaster that his decision is stupid, my partner does not get to punish the co-founder for it."
"Yes."
Elara narrowed her eyes.
"That quickly?"
"I had two days, a public evaluation, a flood, and one near-death experience to consider the paperwork."
"You did not nearly die."
"The bollard disagreed."
"Ren."
He stopped smiling.
"Yes to all four."
Something in her shoulders eased.
Ren stepped closer, but not close enough to touch.
"And my term."
Elara blinked. "You get one?"
"I do not want you to become easier to love."
Her face changed.
"I mean it. I do not want you quieter because we are together. I do not want you pretending you are fine because I had a difficult day. I do not want agreement as affection."
Elara looked down at her bandaged hands.
"That is inconvenient."
"I chose you. I am expecting inconvenience."
She laughed once, softly.
Then she looked back up.
"Good."
Ren’s pulse climbed.
"Elara?"
"I am choosing you."
The words were simple.
They landed harder than any dramatic declaration could have.
"As my partner," she continued. "Officially. Openly. Not as your administrator who sometimes kisses you when the paperwork becomes unbearable."
"That was becoming a very specific position."
"It had poor advancement prospects."
Ren smiled.
Elara did not. Not yet.
"I needed to know something first."
"What?"
"That you could be corrected in public and still come home as the same man."
Ren thought of Maelis ordering him behind the chalk line. Pella owning the bridge. Sylvaine refusing to clear his wrist. Elara telling him, repeatedly, that wanting to help did not make every problem his to command.
"And?"
"Yesterday the town was flooding. You had every excuse to become impossible."
"That sounds flattering."
"It is not finished."
"Of course not."
"You were loud when people needed loud. You obeyed when someone else knew better. You took the dangerous position when it was actually yours to take. Then you came back and helped carry wet blankets instead of demanding applause."
Ren looked at her.
Elara’s voice softened.
"I do not want to build a life around a man I have to manage into being decent."
"That seems like an excellent minimum standard."
"Yes."
"And I passed?"
"You passed enough for me to risk finding out what comes next."
That answer felt more precious than certainty.
Ren nodded.
"I choose you too."
Elara finally smiled.
"Then we schedule our first separate evening before the end of the week."
"No ledgers?"
"No guild work unless the building is actively on fire."
"Small fire?"
"Bram can handle it."
"Terrifying confidence."
"And if an emergency steals the time, we reschedule it. We do not quietly delete it."
Ren held her eyes.
"Agreed."
Elara stepped into him.
"Now you may kiss me."
He did.
Carefully at first because of her hands.
Elara solved that by hooking both wrapped wrists loosely behind his neck and kissing him until careful became considerably less organized.
Ren kept his right wrist protected and his left hand at her waist.
When he started to pull back for breath, Elara followed.
"Public acknowledgment," she murmured against his mouth.
"I thought that meant downstairs."
"It does."
She kissed him again.
"This is private confirmation."
"Excellent governance."
"Stop talking."
He obeyed that order too.
By breakfast, Elara had converted romance into a procedure.
Of course she had.
A fresh card sat beside the request ledger.
PERSONAL CONFLICT DISCLOSURE
If a personal relationship overlaps a contract, fee, discipline, staffing decision, or evaluation, disclose the conflict. Where practical, another qualified person handles or witnesses the conflicted decision.
Below it, in smaller writing:
Relationship status creates no guild authority.
Elara added one final sentence only after Ren read the first two.
Ending a relationship does not automatically end housing, employment, contracts, protection, or membership.
Ren tapped the line with one finger.
"Keep that even if nobody else ever dates anyone here."
"I intended to."
"Good."
She looked at him sideways. "You are being suspiciously easy today."
"I am trying a radical new strategy where I do not make you fight for rules I already agree with."
"Dangerous. Continue."
Bram read it while stirring porridge.
"So if I romance the baker, I cannot award her all flour purchases?"
Elara looked up.
"Correct."
"Cruel."
"You may still romance her."
"Merciful."
Nia came in carrying wet route markers from yesterday’s flood cleanup.
Her eyes went first to the card.
Then to Elara.
Then to Ren.
Elara did not hide behind the ledger.
"Ren and I are partners."
Nia went very still.
Ren said nothing.
This was not his announcement to soften.
Nia’s gaze stayed on Elara.
"Your choice?"
"Yes."
"Your terms?"
"Accepted."
"And mine are still mine?"
Elara’s expression sharpened.
"Entirely."
Nia nodded.
Then she smiled.
"Good."
She bumped her shoulder lightly against Elara’s, stole a piece of toast from Bram’s tray, and walked toward the route board.
Bram stared after her.
"Was that legally significant?"
"No," three people said at once.
Ren laughed.
The hall was already waking around them.
Six observation patients remained behind the clinic screens. Kellan was resetting intake stubs. Brinna limped through the yard complaining about damp rope. Maelis had left a note reminding Ren that flood heroics had not medically cleared his wrist.
Nothing about becoming Elara’s partner erased any of it.
Good.
Ren crossed to the request desk and stood beside her.
Not over it.
Beside it.
A merchant waiting by the door noticed their joined shoulders and smiled knowingly.
Elara saw him see.
She did not move away.
Ren felt something settle inside him.
Not ownership.
Not certainty that nothing could go wrong.
Something better.
Chosen.
At midday, Nia disappeared upstairs.
She returned carrying a battered cedar route chest with iron corners.
Ren had never seen it before.
She set it beneath the route board with a heavy thump.
Elara looked at the chest.
Ren looked at Nia.
Nia rested one boot on the lid.
"My turn," she said.
