I Have a Task Log
Chapter 557 - 556: Knowledge of the Demon Fish
Chapter 557: Chapter 556: Knowledge of the Demon Fish
Counting the Invisibility Technique and Find Familiar he had previously used, Colin had learned a total of eight spells during this period.
Among them were five Tier One Magic spells: Jump, Longstrider, Protection from Evil and Good, Silent Illusion, and Invisible Servant.
Jump and Longstrider enhanced the subject’s Sports abilities, while Silent Illusion was the spell the Half-Sheepman Salin had used before, capable of creating soundless illusions.
Among them, the spell Protection from Evil and Good was relatively more complex.
It granted the subject powerful protection against certain types of creatures for ten minutes. The targets were typically things like Evil Demons, Undead Creatures, or Celestial Creatures.
When the spell took effect and the subject was attacked by a designated creature, the subject would gain a two-point bonus to Defense and spell resistance, while also becoming immune to possession-, domination-, and fear-type spells from the designated creature.
Furthermore, casting the spell required the Caster to consume some Holy Water or Iron Powder.
These consumable materials couldn’t be substituted by a Spellbook and had to be prepared in advance.
The spell was quite useful if you knew the enemy’s type in advance. The only drawback was that the Rising Tier Spellcasting technique couldn’t be used to increase the number of subjects.
The final spell, Invisible Servant, was a Tier One Magic spell well-suited for everyday use.
This spell could summon an invisible Force Field creature, which the Caster could command to do chores like laundry and cooking.
It had virtually no combat ability. When Colin had it throw a punch, it felt like being hit by a small cotton ball—it had no power at all.
Colin flipped through the pages of his Spellbook.
Then, besides Invisibility Technique, he also learned a spell called Wind Guard.
Wind Guard, a Tier Two Magic spell, summons a strong wind in a three-meter radius around the user that swirls around and moves with them.
The fierce wind summoned by the spell was strong enough to extinguish some non-magical flames, disperse poisonous gas and fog, and cause some arrows to deviate from their original trajectory.
Colin was primarily interested in its ability to disperse poisonous gas.
If he encountered poisonous gas in a narrow space later, he would at least have a countermeasure.
Since High-tier Magic took too long to learn, Colin didn’t force himself to study it. After all, he still had to deal with the exploration of the Ancient Empire ruins.
So, he spent 300 gold coins on a Scroll of Fly.
With the Scroll, his learning progress was indeed much faster. In just three days, Colin had copied the Magic Model from the Scroll into his Spellbook.
Fly, a Tier Three Magic spell, allows the user to touch a willing creature and grant it the ability to fly for ten minutes, with a maximum flight Speed of three meters per second.
He learned this spell mainly for its utility.
In any case, the ability to fly would be useful in most situations.
If his enemies had no ranged attacks, casting this spell on himself would basically put him in an invincible position.
After learning so many spells, the feeling that his brain was overloaded grew more intense.
Even if Colin spent twenty-four hours a day reviewing his Magic Book, it would be impossible for him to memorize all the spells. He would have to wait until actual combat to focus on reviewing the specific Magic Models he needed.
Finally, there were his expenses during this time.
In the past month or so, besides the money for the Scroll, Colin had also spent money on materials for his magic training, which all together added up to five hundred Gold Coins.
After all that spending, Colin was left with about two thousand Gold Coins in his savings.
And that was with him being frugal. He had spent five hundred Gold Coins in about five weeks, and that was even after Morel had given him a discount on the Scroll.
If he were to learn a few more High-tier Magic spells, he could easily wipe out his savings.
Thinking of this, Colin suddenly recalled a joke Asvir had once told: "The stronger the Mage, the poorer the Mage." ’That joke isn’t too far from my reality,’ he thought.
Of course, all this money had been spent for a good reason.
Because Colin had spent this time learning spells and practicing his Casting and Metamagic Technique, the Skill Level of his other Skills hadn’t changed much. His Casting Skill Level, however, had increased to: Casting (Expert) 4379/4000.
Colin sighed.
’And I can’t forget about the Dragonbone Greatsword I left with Donkexes,’ he thought. ’Even with a big discount, the crafting fee probably won’t be less than five hundred Gold Coins.’
Thinking of Donkexes, Colin remembered the Dwarf had asked him to visit before he left.
’It’s still early. I have time to go take a look,’ he thought.
After organizing the knowledge in his Spellbook, Colin got up and walked toward the door. He said farewell to Morel on his way out. "I’m leaving now. See you later, Morel."
"Hm? Alright." Morel was carefully examining a document an apprentice had brought over.
Colin immediately left the laboratory, exited the Black Tower, and headed toward the Dwarves’ sewer entrance.
As soon as he reached the sewer entrance, he saw two Dwarves walking out.
Colin recalled for a moment; he thought they were Dred and Bardin.
The moment they saw Colin, they ran over smiling. Each clapped him on an arm and started greeting him.
"Well if it isn’t Colin! What brings you here?" "How about we head to the tavern for a drink?"
"I have to go find Donkexes, so maybe not today," Colin replied, politely declining with a smile.
The two Dwarves didn’t press the issue. They chatted for a moment more before walking away cheerfully, all of their previous awkwardness gone.
His mood slightly lifted, Colin arrived at Donkexes’s herb shop. The old Dwarf was standing behind the counter, grinding herbs with a medicine pestle.
When he saw Colin arrive, he looked up and said, "Hm, Colin? Is there something you need?"
"It’s almost time for us to leave, and I remember you telling me to stop by before we go," Colin said.
"Ah, right. Wait a moment..." Donkexes ducked his head and brought out a small wooden box from behind the counter, then carefully opened its lid.
The box was lined with smooth satin, and in the very center lay a monocle.
The monocle’s lens was a transparent red, just like the eyeball of an Aboleth. Its chain was carved from bone, and a pale red Gemstone was inlaid where the chain met the frame. When Colin looked closer, he saw that there was a bizarrely shaped brain right in the middle of the Gemstone.
